t has been 21 years since Karan Johar\u2019s wildly popular debut <\/span>Kuch Kuch Hota Hai<\/span><\/i> immortalised that true love is all about lusting after your best friend\u2026 after eight years of <\/span>friendzoning<\/span><\/a> her. This Filmfare Award-winning classic taught us innumerable lessons: It reminded us that eight-year-old daughters were the original <\/span>Tinder<\/span><\/a> for their widowed dads. And that the easiest way to get someone to fall in <\/span>love<\/span><\/a> with you was by growing out your hair. Easy-peasy.<\/span>\n\nExcept it\u2019s not 1998 anymore. No matter how much we once revered <\/span>Kuch Kuch Hota Hai\u2019s <\/span><\/i>dating lessons, it\u2019s hard to deny that the film hasn\u2019t aged very well. And the less we talk about Rahul Khanna\u2019s image, the better. It\u2019s no wonder then that Khanna happened to get in touch with me to refute all accusations of being a <\/span>frat boy<\/span><\/a> by sharing his side of the story. <\/span>\n\nWhat followed was a surreal conversation.<\/span>\n\nSo you want to tell us about <\/b>Kuch Kuch Hota Hai <\/i><\/b>from your point of view? Let\u2019s start from the beginning. Where and how did you meet Anjali?<\/b>\n\nAh, man. It\u2019s a long story. So I got late when Tina was in the hospital because I forgot to put my pants on and had to go back home again. When I finally reached, Anjali was already born. So I went in…<\/span>\n\nActually, I meant Anjali Sharma, your second wife.<\/b>\n\nOh why didn\u2019t you say that? I made her change her name after we got married because there was too much confusion in the house. She\u2019s now <\/span>Patanjali<\/span><\/a>. It was cool for a while but then <\/span>Baba Ramdev<\/span><\/a> went ahead and stole my idea by launching a whole brand! On one hand, my mother, the religious nut, started buying only Patanjali products and on the other, Patanjali refused to change her name again. Chicks, right?! You ask them to change their name twice and suddenly you\u2019re the bad guy.<\/span>\n\n

How I kept saying \u201cKuch kuch hota hai, tum nahi samjhogi\u201d? That was all a cry for help, but no one understood it.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\nAnyway, I met her on the first day of college. I thought she was a dude because she was in men\u2019s clothes playing basketball and was pretty annoying. I actually realised that she was a girl when I asked her if she wanted to join me to take a whiz in the bushes and she looked at me like I was crazy. But then I saw her playing alone and decided to give her company because I felt bad for her and not because *suddenly gets angry* I \u201csucked at basketball and would\u2019ve gotten my ass kicked if I played with guys\u201d like the whole college thought. Losers, right?<\/span>\n\nHow did you two become best friends?<\/b>\n\nWell, she was just like a dude, you know? None of that girly shit like talking about clothes or make-up all the time. She liked to rewatch <\/span>Rocky<\/span><\/i> multiple times instead of <\/span>When Harry Met Sally<\/span><\/i>. Guys are just so easy to get along with.<\/span>\n\nUm, don\u2019t you think you\u2019re still being misogynistic?<\/b>\n\nMiso- what? I prefer teriyaki. <\/span>\n\nUh, let\u2019s move on. The two of you drifted apart. She left because she was in love with you and you didn\u2019t feel the same way until you did. Did you guys talk about it after your wedding?<\/b>\n\nYeah, we did. I burst out laughing when she told me that\u2019s why she moved away. I was like \u201cWhaaaaaat?\u201d How the fuck was I supposed to know what she was feeling, right? We were <\/span>best friends<\/span><\/a> who knew each other so well, spent so much time together… and yet she expected me to know how she felt. I felt so hurt and wronged at the time. It\u2019s like she didn\u2019t care about me or my feelings at all.<\/span>\n\nDid you ever talk about why this love was one-sided in college?<\/b>\n\nSee, Patanjali told me that when I said that \u201cPyaar dosti hai\u201d and implied I couldn\u2019t fall in love with someone who wasn\u2019t my best friend, it \u201capparently\u201d misled her. That\u2019s crazy, right? Is it my fault that she trusted a man and didn\u2019t realise that I was just trying to get with Tina? I mean, I\u2019d say pretty much anything to get <\/span>laid<\/span><\/a>. So she was all like \u201cBut I thought you meant it\u201d and I was like \u201cWell, that ain\u2019t my problem, babydawl.\u201d For some reason, she asked me to sleep in the guest room for a week after this conversation. I think it was her <\/span>time of the month<\/span><\/a>. Chicks, right?<\/span>\n\nWhat changed when you met her in Shimla eight years later?<\/b>\n\nSee, I later realised that I have this mental disorder that stops me from viewing conventionally unattractive women as human beings. People keep trivialising this illness even though they\u2019re always going on about <\/span>depression<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>anxiety<\/span><\/a> and I\u2019m like, \u201cHow would YOU feel if you missed out on so much sex just because you couldn\u2019t get past someone\u2019s appearance?\u201d It caused me so much pain. All those friendship bands and \u201cCOOL\u201d necklaces I kept buying? How I kept saying \u201cKuch kuch hota hai, tum nahi samjhogi\u201d? That was all a cry for help, but no one understood it. All I got were taunts. Sometimes when I\u2019m alone, I still hear cries of \u201cRahul is a cheater, he is a cheater.\u201d Memories, right?<\/span>\n\nBut then years passed and I met Patanjali in <\/span>Shimla<\/span><\/a>. She was smokin\u2019 hot. When her pallu was blown away by the wind, I had a profound thought: \u201cI\u2019d totally hit that.\u201d I suppose, the best part was that she became sexy AND sanskari. Tina was cool and all, but let\u2019s face it, she was way too modern when I met her. I mean, she only started wearing salwar-kameez and sarees after we got married. Anyway, I\u2019m really glad that Patanjali found sanskar and I found her.<\/span>\n\nUm, Rahul, that doesn\u2019t help your sexist image a whole lot\u2026<\/b>\n\nBut I clearly said that \u201cEk mard ka sar teen auraton ke saamne jhukta hai.\u201d How could I be <\/span>sexist<\/span><\/a> if I\u2019m bowing to chicks, dude? <\/span>\n\nForget it.
