Trying to see it all can be exhausting, when the pace of popular culture today is faster than Usain Bolt on steroids.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I work in a media office, which means being up-to-date with the latest shows is more important than turning up on time, no matter what the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/introvert-vs-office-hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might say. Watercooler conversations and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/quit-cigarettes-smoker-withdrawal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoke breaks <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unfold like jousting contests, with the latest episode of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing Eve <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/the-handmaids-tale-margaret-atwood-elisabeth-moss-golden-globes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serving as the combatants\u2019 weapons. There\u2019s always some subtle one-upmanship at play, as the person not completely up-to-date with the latest flavour of the season will feel find himself ostracised from conversations, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/ramdev-baba-patanjali\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baba Ramdev <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at a doctors\u2019 convention.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week\u2019s Emmy Awards triggered the bragging contest once again, reminding everyone at work that we haven\u2019t made each other feel inadequate for a while. Suddenly, I had been slapped with a whole new list of recommendations and surrounded with colleagues throwing, \u201cWoah <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/barry-hbo-bill-hader-alec-berg-crime-comedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s the darkest TV comedy of 2018,\u201d and \u201cBro, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Americans<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is simply brill\u201d at each other. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had never heard of these shows until last week. And when I sheepishly confessed, I drew the same mixture of disgust and scorn as someone who refuses to stand up for the national anthem in a movie theatre.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the age of #PeakTV, and there\u2019s a plethora of content out there that is intellectually stimulating, aesthetically pleasing, and artistically rewarding. But I\u2019ve realised it is possible to have too much of a good thing. If television is food for thought, then these acclaimed shows are like caviar \u2013 perfectly fine to treat yourself to, but sometimes you just want good old <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/this-week-in-food\/molestation-consent-sexual-harassment-at-the-workplace-vada-pav\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vada pav<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>If the thought of replacing Sansa Stark with Sunny Leone or Snooki feels like a kamikaze attack on your brain cells, stop for a second and think about why cringe-pop goes viral.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s how I found myself going home after another day of TV-centric interrogation, promising to finish <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/bojack-horseman-netflix-tv-show-animated-dark-comedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BoJack Horseman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> long-awaited fifth season&#8230; but turning to MTV\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/mtv-splitsvilla-sunny-leone-ranvijay-singha-licktionary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Splitsvilla XI<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for sweet release. It\u2019s been my guilty pleasure for years, along with other so-called \u201ctrashy\u201d reality shows like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jersey Shore <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love Island<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even with the violent screaming and garish graphics, these shows are ironically soothing. Your brain can go on standby, and you transform into a passive bystander, allowing the action on the screen to wash over you in a tide of mindless entertainment.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This phenomenon is tackled in an article in The Guardian<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/tvandradioblog\/2014\/feb\/13\/tv-palate-cleansers-breaking-bad-cake-boss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTV Palate Cleansers: After Breaking Bad, Viewers Need Cake Boss\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The author writes that palate-cleansing shows serve as a useful tonal instrument, giving viewers\u2019 minds a break, thereby increasing their appreciation for the weighty themes and layered writing on more \u201cserious\u201d shows. \u201c \u2026 Man cannot live on quality drama alone. You find yourself either shuffling around with your brow furrowed as you wrestle with the weighty thematic issues of whatever you\u2019re binge-watching, or trapped in a desperate cycle of increasingly hyperbolic praise for a show that you only really like because a broadsheet newspaper said you should. When this happens, you need crap. You need a palate-cleanser.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the thought of replacing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/game-of-thrones-season-7-sansa-stark-badass-sophie-turner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sansa Stark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/sunny-leone-arbaaz-khan-taboo-tera-intezar-bollywood-movies-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunny Leone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Snooki feels like a kamikaze attack on your brain cells, stop for a second and think about why <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/bol-na-aunty-aau-kya-om-prakash-mishra-viral-video-baba-sehgal-dhinchak-pooja\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cringe-pop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goes viral. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it was \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/omprakash-mishra-bol-na-aunty-aau-kya-the-quint-deeksha-sharma-cringe-pope-aunty-ki-ghanti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bol Na Aunty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, \u201cMan\u2019s Not Hot\u201d, or that infectious earworm that is the \u201cBobs &#038; Vegana\u201d track, no one would commit the sin of comparing it to Pink Floyd or Miles Davis. Still, at the height of their popularity, these songs were as well-known as any timeless classics. Like cringe-pop anthems or a timeline full of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/memes-language-millennial-internet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dank memes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, palate-cleansing shows keep you entertained without forcing you to think too much, keeping those grey cells charged up to better unravel the existential riddle that is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Westworld<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s season two.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a reason shows like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bigg Boss <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and whatever crap Chuck Lorre is following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/the-big-bang-theory-season-12-series-finale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Big Bang Theory<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up with, have such enduring popularity. They are the Yin to prestige TV\u2019s Yang.
