{"id":3378,"date":"2016-06-04T06:38:26","date_gmt":"2016-06-04T01:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=3378"},"modified":"2016-06-04T06:38:26","modified_gmt":"2016-06-04T01:08:26","slug":"manmarziyaan-wrong-modern-love-tinder-arranged-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=3378","title":{"rendered":"Arranged Marriage, Tinder, &#038; Why Manmarziyan is Completely Wrong About Modern Love in India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">T<\/span><\/p><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here\u2019s a scene in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/manmarziyaan-review-vicky-kaushal-anurag-kashyap-tapsee-pannu-abhishek-bachchan\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manmarziyan<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in which fiery Rumi tells her new NRI husband Robbie that she\u2019s not a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/arre-checklist-diy-tips-grow-hymen-back-virginity-test-pune\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virgin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if that\u2019s the reason he came all the way home to find a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/the-desperate-housewives-of-haryana\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He turns the statement back on her \u2013 \u200a\u201cI\u2019m not one either.\u201d Her declaration is meant to be brazen, his reassuring. And yet, more than halfway into the movie, this seems to be lazy shorthand for how unconventional these people are, without giving any sense of how or why.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposition at the heart of a film as exuberant and busy as this is the rather insipid observation that young Indian women have enough <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/relationships-dating-advice-love-romance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relationship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience to be able to make a choice, and Indian men are getting used to it. I\u2019ve <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caravanmagazine.in\/perspectives\/faux-feminism-bollywood-new-romantic-comedy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before that the figure of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/shaadi-mein-zaroor-aana-rajkummar-rao-kriti-kharbanda-bollywood-movie-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manic Pixie Desi Girl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Bollywood reflects the patriarchal appropriation of what passes as \u201csexual liberation\u201d in India. The free-spirited woman is a cipher, not a fully developed person, designed to cater to male fantasies about sexual availability and emotional self-sufficiency. <\/span>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/manmarziyaan-rumi-vicky-taapsee-pannu\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manmarziyan<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">badly wants to explore what it really means to be in love in a world where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/tinder-death-obituary-dating-apps-hinge-happn-grindr\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/arranged-marriage-indian-brides-grooms-parents-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arranged marriages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> co-exist in the same reality\u200a \u2013 \u200aan ostensibly interesting premise. Unfortunately, much like the real-life scenarios it\u2019s based on, it ends up taking a deeply conservative and status quoist turn, succumbing to an idealised \u2013 and unchallenging \u2013 model of companionship.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, one cannot expect radical politics from popular cinema. But when a film affects a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/fairy-tales-indian-feminist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feminist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accent and makes a fetish out of the supposed conflict between the love that a woman chooses and that which she is expected to accept, you can no longer wish away the context in which these love stories are set. There was a time, up until the early 2000s, when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/bollywood-pahlaj-nihalani-emraan-hashmi-kissing-romance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollywood romances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were feudal affairs in which familial disapproval and the spectre of violent punishment were staple tropes. These melodramas were sexist and formulaic and recent films have made a virtue out of supposedly challenging these depictions of women and their agency. But increasingly, the superficiality of their treatment of gender has become obvious by their refusal to touch the one aspect that determines the viability of love in this country \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/ankit-saxena-murder-inter-faith-marriages\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>What is at stake in Bollywood romance? We live in a society in which death is the consequence of falling for the wrong person, especially if they belong to a more powerful community.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/shaadi-mein-zaroor-aana-arranged-marriage-rajkumar-rao-kriti-harbanda\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arranged marriages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India are meant to ensure caste \u201cpurity\u201d, a way to consolidate capital and strengthen the hierarchies that keep the many oppressed. For Rumi, Robbie, and many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/millennials-india-caste-yogi-adityanath-bhimrao-ambedkar-himachal-pradesh\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upper-caste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Indians like them, the option of a readymade match is always present as a Plan B, insurance against a life of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/instagram-people-social-media-features\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loneliness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and self-reliance. Where is the effort, the work, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insistence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that goes into determining who will accompany us on the journey? The uncertain pleasures and pressures of making love last are shrugged aside for the relatively less onerous option of settling down with someone picked out by the family.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Praise of Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the philosopher Alain Badiou comes down on what he terms \u201czero-risks\u201d love. He argues that love is actually a process by which a random chance encounter, an event that could as easily never have occurred, becomes the basis of a lasting bond, of a truth that becomes necessary to the lives of two people. Badiou is dismissive of the Euro-American practice of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/tinder-hinge-online-dating-truth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online dating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aimed at securing love, without putting anything at stake, and asserts that, metaphysically speaking, this is not love at all. He likens it to arranged marriage: \u201cNot done in the name of family order and hierarchy by despotic parents, but in the name of safety for the individuals involved, through advance agreements that avoid\u2026 any existential <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/aarushi\/the-poetry-of-justice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poetry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, due to the categorical absence of risks.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is at stake in Bollywood romance? We live in a society in which death is the consequence of falling for the wrong person, especially if they belong to a more powerful community. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manmarziyan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s opening week alone saw two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/dalit-caste-identity-workplace-sc-st-progressive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dalit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> men murdered for marrying upper-caste women. This is how risky it is to love IRL. And yet, for an industry obsessed with love, Bollywood can\u2019t tackle its deepest aspects at all. Stories that are actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this are bowdlerised\u200a \u2013 \u200a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/sairat-remake-karan-johar-jhanvi-kapoor-ishan-khattar-bollywood\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sairat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anti-caste charge was completely neutralised when it was remade as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/dhadak-janhvi-kapoor-ishaan-khatter-sairat-caste\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dhadak<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Occasionally, when this subject is explored by replacing caste with class through the usual \u201crich girl\/poor boy\u201d cliche, the protagonists court dishonour and pay for it with their lives. But even when that\u2019s not the entire, tragic point of their story, upper-caste protagonists of Bollywood romances are untroubled by a far less lethal risk \u2013 the possibility that they will <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be loved by someone deemed suitable. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rumi-Vicky-Robbie triangle is devoid of any sense of what the perils of 21st-century love in India might be \u2013 \u200ayoung people sleeping around and changing their minds is hardly the stuff of epics. Which would be fine if the film weren\u2019t setting itself up as one, with the angsty ballads, overripe landing moments and hyperbolic character reactions. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>As Rumi changes her mind again and again, you are alerted to the convenience of it all\u200a \u2013 if not Vicky\u2019s passion, then Robbie\u2019s care.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This mismatch between the tenor of the film and its banal mise en scene is most evident when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/music\/the-love-song-of-amrita-pritam\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amrita Pritam\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cMain tenu phir milangi,\u201d written for Imroz, her partner of 50 years, appears in the film, ironically revealing how inappropriate it is for the on-again\/off-again adolescent drama of Rumi and Vicky\u2019s dalliance. They are meant to be kids playing at being lovers in a world of adults: nowhere is this more obvious than in the scene in which Rumi rides over to Robbie\u2019s house (on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/outdoors\/royal-enfield-pegasus-bullet-road-trip\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bullet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you guys!) on the night before their wedding to inform him that she\u2019s going to elope, which is followed by him sabotaging her plans by speaking to his nemesis Vicky\u2019s parents. Rumi is infantilised and reined in by the man later presented to us as her great ultimate choice\u200a \u2013 \u200aa <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/work-spouse-work-wife-office-husband-jobs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">husband<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so magnanimous he doesn\u2019t react <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> badly when he discovers his wife possibly cheating on him with a man he <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knew<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he was separating her from. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s something disquieting about a man clearly much older than this woman in her early 20s being so utterly besotted by her for no reason than that she\u2019s \u201cfeisty\u201d in the most stereotypically filmy way possible. We never really understand why \u2013 \u200ashe has wild hair and once played <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/whats-a-hockey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hockey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that\u2019s pretty much it. We never discover what else she is finally striving for except being validated by a man, or what her hopes and dreams as a human being are, apart from being the object of someone\u2019s love. She isn\u2019t allowed to be young in the sense that Vicky is \u2013 erring and maturing and leaving to make a life elsewhere on her own. Her coolness and youth is meant for the consumption of a man \u2013 sexy and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/real-men-crying-emotional-sensitive-men-vulnerable\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vulnerable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and to be controlled by love. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all the saucy realism that the current crop of genre romances peddle, they are unable to confront that which makes love worthwhile \u2013 \u200arisk. And this completely undercuts all the pretensions to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/fake-feminist-men-feminism-india-sex-relationships-satire\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feminism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Bollywood tries to sell. The risks are notional\u200a \u2013 love is guaranteed. There is never the fear that love will fail, people will break up, upset their clan or not have a white knight immediately waiting in the wings. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where are the fun, confused young women who end up by themselves and become stronger because of it? Where are the women who bid their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/muslim-family-weddings-nikaah\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">families<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their orthodoxies goodbye and try to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/30-never-love-relationships-dating-singlehood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fly solo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or find an alternative support system? They are uncommon in the real world, indeed, but if the whole point of Hindi romantic dramas is to present to us \u201cfeisty\u201d, \u201cfearless\u201d special snowflakes who \u201caren\u2019t like other girls\u201d, they had better deliver on those promises and not have us applauding their specialness for nothing. It is one thing to present the story of Rumi as something that happens all too often and to explore that experience on its own terms \u2013 but to elevate her dilemma and give her this epiphany that she is in \u201cgrown-up love\u201d with the man chosen for her links her coming-of-age with the realisation that her elders knew best all along. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the surface, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manmarziyan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, following a handful of films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queen, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/shah-rukh-khan-alia-bhatt-dear-zindagi-mental-health-gauri-shinde\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear Zindagi<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(neither of which are love stories) and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shuddh Desi Romance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rejects \u00a0heteropatriarchal marriage in a move towards embracing empowered female characters who exercise their agency. But for this rejection to be anything more than a symbolic flourish to accord the movie the imprimatur of being progressive, there has to be an acknowledgement that there exists a reality of a long, possibly terminal singlehood, a period of learning from misjudgements, the dangers and joys of living with just oneself and one\u2019s mistakes. Hell, even the fraught world of dating multiple people, whether at once or serially, would allow for some thoughtful reflection on what intimacy even is for youth gadding about in a world of home-delivered sex endangered by the paranoia around ghar ki izzat. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Rumi changes her mind again and again, you are alerted to the convenience of it all\u200a \u2013 if not Vicky\u2019s passion, then Robbie\u2019s care. Sure, she makes her own decisions but what are the choices before her in the first place? If anything, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manmarziyan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gestures towards the complicity of upper-caste women in the gilding of their own cages. It doesn\u2019t matter who she picks because Bollywood ensures that in order to have a happy, feel-good ending befitting the tone of the film, \u201clove will follow\u201d, as the homily about arranged marriages goes.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many ways, this certainty is what makes true love\u200a \u2013 Badiou\u2019s \u201ctenacious adventure\u201d \u2013 \u200aso difficult in India onscreen and off it. The question that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/vicky-kaushal-masaan-raazi-manmarziyaan\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marmaziyan<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wanted to ask but couldn\u2019t is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can we love in a society designed to prevent bodies from bumping into each other and rearranging the world they move in?<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For all of Manmarziyan\u2019s feminist pretensions, its lead Rumi is a cipher, waiting for validation from the men in her life.
