A decade and a half later, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Disaster Artist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a film on the making of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Room<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, earned a nod for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/golden-globes-nominations-hollywood-awards-oscars-three-billboards-outside-ebbing-missouri\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oscars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and won its lead, James Franco a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/seth-meyers-golden-globes-tina-fey-amy-poehler\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden Globe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The tide had suddenly changed: From being a film that almost everyone had ignored or had demolished, people were now inexplicably warming up to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Room\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eccentricities<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And even acknowledging its appeal while fervently rewatching it \u2013 watching it with affection rather than disgust. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Closer home, a similar situation unfolded 20 years ago: India disregarded the release of one of its own oddities, Kanti Shah\u2019s vigilante action and justice starrer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over the years, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over-the-top shenanigans have earned it the status of India\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Room<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Considering the appetite for excess that we now display in our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/the-lost-art-of-downloading-music-and-compiling-mixtapes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> popular culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can we all agree that perhaps it\u2019s time <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should also be considered a work of art?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Room<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s popularity was neither sudden nor orchestrated by its makers; instead it rose gradually, hopping along <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/dead-vacation-laptop-indian-office-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laptop screens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in countless engineering colleges that dot India. When I\u2019d watched it 10 years ago in mine, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was touted as the film you couldn\u2019t finish. I never did. Even after 20 attempts, I haven\u2019t gotten through to the film\u2019s end. Not because it is grating or leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth, but because it overwhelms me with its earnestness, it\u2019s honest-to-god belief in its ridiculousness.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shah\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a standard one-good-man-against-all-evil kind of film, where its hero \u2014 both through his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/bro-code-toxic-masculinity-woke-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">morality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and personal happenstance \u2014 closes (murders) each chapter of the evil tome he finds himself the protagonist (and victim) of. Think a poor man\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">V for Vendetta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>It\u2019s natural to laugh at Gunda, and rarely with it. Its ludicrousness is like a handicap it cannot (and perhaps never intended to) overcome.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one hand, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should probably be classified as a poor film \u2014 a rancorously juvenile concoction of shoddy imagery that zips together the blunt edges of unimpeachable dialogue. But on the other, Shah\u2019s faith in his own imagination and most crucially, the locus of his broad view highlight a certain kind of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/break-up-confessions-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">honesty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In an era where directors became travel agents and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/multiplex-food-indian-audiences\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiplexes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chose to cater to the affluent middle-classes, that a man in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/work-mumbai-rains-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mumbai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decided to make a film so abstract, so unsubtle, and so brutally on-the-nose, is evidence of heart, if nothing else.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did not rise to fame on the back of its ineptness alone. Its first 15 minutes are a perilously unsentimental montage of real <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/marathi-manoos-mns-multiplex\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> introducing themselves with statuesque couplets \u2014 the kind of one-liners you cannot unhear. Be it Ibu Hatela announcing his lineage as \u201cMaa meri chudail ki beti\u201d or a version of a trans-person, Shakti Kapoor eating something called \u201cVitamin Sex\u201d. In a way,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gunda\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> popularity is also a nod to its originality and its unwillingness to become embedded in a culture that runs on pretence. Had <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tried to be the ocean that touches every shore, it would be as indistinct as each lie we tell ourselves; like the many inoffensive, milquetoast films <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/sanju-veere-di-wedding-bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers as an excuse for its offscreen indecency. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s natural to laugh at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and rarely with it. Its ludicrousness is like a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/book-club-review-jane-fonda-diane-keaton\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handicap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it cannot (and perhaps never intended to) overcome. But while we roar at its preposterousness, there are tiny prophecies the film echoes that go further than most people give it credit for. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coined wondrous labels like \u201cqafan-chor neta\u201d or pearls of wisdom like \u201cAajkal netagiri aur dadagiri ek hi baap ke do harami aulaad hain.\u201d Which one of us, at one point or the other, has not held a similar opinion? <\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also affords us a more literal translation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/daisy-irani-bollywood-child-abuse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Of course it is deeply misogynistic \u2013 the film\u2019s villains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/asia-argento-date-rape-sexual-assault-victims\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rape<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> women after declaring that they will. But in an age where hate-speech is a potent cannon and rape the weapon of collective masculinity, can we blame Shah\u2019s villains for looking a lot like India\u2019s men?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there\u2019s the mysteriousness of the film\u2019s director to contend with: Shah has never agreed to interviews; I have tried to contact him to no avail. There are stories of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/bobby-deol-films-comeback\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brothers beating him and other loose ends scattered across unverified anecdotes on the internet, but very little is known about the man himself. Perhaps, Shah is wise enough to know that it isn\u2019t his life or his opinions that the world anticipates, but his inanity. A world that is waiting to discover just how big of a joker the man really is. After all, anything less would be misjudgement, even in an age where anything qualifies as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/instagram-poets-literature-social-media\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poetry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, music, and a talent worthy of fame.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its heart, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remains a joyous journey of one man\u2019s idea of cinema and his devotion to it. As we\u2019ve witnessed, films that are comparatively frivolous in both intent and spirit are generously heralded as blockbusters because they play safe. Unlike <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Shah may have descended into oblivion since <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the film will continue to be seen as a homage to his own eccentricity and individualism.
