It was the DNA of this emotionally handicapped geeky megalomaniac that its creator Chuck Lorre exploited to present a crossover between science and comedy. And while it didn\u2019t take him more than Sheldon\u2019s \u201cYou\u2019re in my spot\u201d or his incessant knocking to achieve that sweet spot, 11 years and 12 seasons later, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TBBT <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has ended up being a show we can\u2019t wait to bid goodbye to. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/brooklyn-nine-nine-season-6-nbc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">show <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comes to an end in 2019. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first season of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TBBT <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was unlike anything we\u2019d seen on TV: A group of loserly science nerds headlining a show. It didn\u2019t just make science cool again, but also acted as a clever commentary on how little <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/indian-men-the-original-incels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">men <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 even those who seem to have all the answers about the universe \u2013 actually know about women. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The show revolved around the uneventful lives of three physicists (Sheldon, Leonard, and Raj) and a dude with a masters degree (Howard) who have one thing in common: they all suck at social situations. Raj couldn\u2019t talk to women without consuming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/arre-checklist-daaru-and-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Leonard suffered from low self-esteem. Howard dressed and behaved like he time-travelled from the 1960s. Sheldon needed more mollycoddling than a bunch of babies at a nursery.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two seasons down, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TBBT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became the only show that recognised the potential of geeks and mined their culture into mainstream situational <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/seinfeld-friends-jerry-seinfeld-elaine-sitcoms-comedy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comedy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s unfettered popularity stemmed from the fact that it felt like a show that was for the outcasts who felt under-represented on TV. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, somewhere down the road, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TBBT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lost its fans. Today when news about the 12th season being the show\u2019s last one surfaced, I am one of those elated by the development \u2013 although I am wondering why the elevator from season 1 still hasn\u2019t been fixed. And just like that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/world-joke-day-non-veg-jokes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at this point, the show feels like a generic joke that has been dragged on for way too long. It\u2019s only natural that no one\u2019s laughing anymore.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>As multiple viewers have pointed out, the show\u2019s half-arsed appropriation of nerd culture, while simultaneously trying to stay relevant for a mainstream audience has earned it enemies everywhere.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things started getting pretty bizarre from the show\u2019s fifth season. It started off with a mind-boggling reveal: Penny, the hot waitress who lives across Leonard and Sheldon ended up sleeping with Raj, the only guy from the group who can\u2019t talk to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/women-dont-visit-ladies-loo-alone\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was only the beginning of the show straying away from its core plot. New characters were introduced, multiple subplots manufactured, and a girl-gang was formed (their duties however were only relegated to drinking wine). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the following seasons, Sheldon\u2019s toxic ways continue to be romanticised (how long can a grown man not being able to sleep alone be funny?) and the show depended heavily on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/the-death-of-the-jnu-stereotype\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stereotypes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As multiple viewers have pointed out, the show\u2019s half-arsed appropriation of nerd culture, while simultaneously trying to stay relevant for a mainstream audience has earned it enemies everywhere. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reddit users have spoken out against how the show appears to condone rape across multiple episodes. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/feminisms\/comments\/1501mk\/getting_tired_of_the_big_bang_theory\/?ref=share&#038;ref_source=embed&#038;utm_content=body&#038;utm_medium=post_embed&#038;utm_name=f58effbb0dde4528abcfbc6f08dd41d5&#038;utm_source=embedly&#038;utm_term=1501mk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discussion thread<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from five years ago, one writes about \u201cthe episode where the stone-cold sober Leonard has sex with the falling-down drunk Penny who\u2019s previously indicated she\u2019s not interested in him. She is then presented as \u2018in the wrong\u2019 for her sexual assault because she sent her ex-boyfriend \u2018misleading messages\u2019. We have the episode where Howard and Raj use satellites to spy on the girls in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">America\u2019s Next Top Model<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> house as they sunbathe topless on what they thought was their private rooftop patio.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another viewer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2017\/09\/24\/why-the-big-bang-theory-is-still-the-worst-show-on-tv-6927848\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThere are bad jokes, and sexist jokes, in all manner of programmes, from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F.R.I.E.N.D.S.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How I Met Your Mother<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outnumbered<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Big Bang Theory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> manages to be worse than a lot of its competitors&#8230; In real life, those four guys wouldn\u2019t just be harmless and hapless. Indeed, a lot of the things they say wouldn\u2019t feel at all out of place in the controversial <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2017\/08\/11\/google-techbro-james-damores-diversity-memo-shows-just-how-deluded-some-people-are-about-gender-6845884\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google memo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 written by a disgruntled Google employee, a polemic against diversity in technology fields.\u201d And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Big Bang Theory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> normalises these views by setting them to a laugh track.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, with great popularity comes great condemnation and some of the censure heaped on successful shows is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/is-marriage-where-feminist-dreams-go-to-die\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fashionable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Yet, in the case of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Big Bang Theory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it somehow feels objective. At this point, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TBBT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is looking like a mediocre version of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F.R.I.E.N.D.S.,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with some mathematical equations thrown in. Even the best things must come to an end \u2013 and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> TBBT <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is far from it.
