{"id":3179,"date":"2016-05-07T20:19:15","date_gmt":"2016-05-07T14:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=3179"},"modified":"2016-05-07T20:19:15","modified_gmt":"2016-05-07T14:49:15","slug":"gulzar-birthday-poetry-song-lyricist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=3179","title":{"rendered":"The Poet Who Belongs to Everyone: Finding Gulzar Wherever I Go"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">W<\/span><\/p><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alking through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/bishti-water-carriers-old-delhi-mashaks-goat-skin-bag\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Old Delhi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Ballimaaran area means that you have to brave crowds, over-enthusiastic shopkeepers, an onslaught of cycle rickshaws, guarding your purses and your senses equally. The overcrowded, overpopulated streets continue to bustle with so much life that their energy threatens to dent the deteriorating chajjas overhead. But that\u2019s not the Ballimaaran I continue to go back for. I\u2019m not interested in the watches or the bangles, the juttis, jalebis, or jhoomars either. All I want to do is walk the very streets that Gulzar walked to get to Ghalib ki Haveli in Gali Qasim Jan, over and over.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it weren\u2019t for Gulzar, I wouldn\u2019t know Ballimaaran; I wouldn\u2019t even know Ghalib. I would\u2019ve never made the effort to explore the layered, complex mithai that is Puraani <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/delhi-metro-city-commute\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dilli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Without Gulzar, I\u2019d never have learnt the art of reading between the lines and finding beauty in the mundane.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had my first brush with Gulzar (or Sampooran Singh Kalra) when I was four. Grown-ups in the family would flock to watch <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirza Ghalib<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on DD National and my father would always say, \u201cKamaal kar diya Gulzar ne.\u201d Over the years, the poet would remain a part of my household \u2013 only I was unaware of him. I was jumping to \u201cLakdi ki kaathi\u201d at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/birthday-stress-bday-cry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birthday parties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, singing \u201cJungle jungle baat chali hai\u201d at home, trying to understand the meaning of \u201cYaara seeli seeli,\u201d bobbing my head to \u201cSun sun sun didi\u201d and performing to \u201cChappa chappa charkha chale\u201d at my school\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/independence-day-mumbai-school-functions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">annual day function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And while I never understood a word of it as a 10-year-old, I had memorised \u201cHumne dekhi hai,\u201d which is what I\u2019d belt out whenever someone said \u201cBeta, gaana sunaao\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My fascination for Gulzar \u2013 as that of a certain demographic of this country \u2013 really began with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dil Se<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.. (1998). Mani Ratnam\u2019s film was a little too complex for the 14-year-old me, but I immediately fell in love with the songs. It amazed me how something as simple and matter-of-fact as \u201cDo patte patjhad ke pedon se utrey the\u201d could find their place in a song, and still hypnotise you with its turn of phrase. Fuelled by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/sticklit-delhi-public-library\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">library card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that gave me access to books and CDs, and dial-up Internet, I began to spend all my free time discovering the master poet.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That of course, was a rabbit hole. Because with Gulzar, the more you discover, the more you crave. Even when I didn\u2019t know it, Gulzar was all around. That is how enmeshed his works are in our lives \u2013 and how our lives are reflected in them.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I was busy making playlists, burning CDs and watching Gulzar films, I didn\u2019t know that I was yet to make the greatest discovery. As 2002 ended, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/arre-checklist-four-movie-endings-bollywood-didnt-want-to-show-you\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saathiya<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came along with a fresh perspective on love. Until this point, I didn\u2019t have a favourite Gulzar song \u2013 now I had \u201cChupke se\u201d. I\u2019d never heard a song that seemed to personally speak to me. \u201cDoston se jhoothi moothi dusron ka naam leke, phir meri baatein karna\u201d&#8230; Heck, I was doing it!<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>The one thing that Gulzar and the poets who found a place in his lyrics have in common is their ability to express without sounding complex. There is a familiarity to their words.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChupke se\u201d also makes a mention of that other famous Dilli poet \u2013 Mir Taqi Mir. Armed with this fresh information, I started revisiting Gulzar\u2019s songs. Not only did I find lines where the mundane had morphed into <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/admin.arre.co.in\/people\/main-zinda-hoon-dead-poets-tale\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poetry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I stumbled upon couplets from Urdu, Persian, and Punjabi poets interlaced and interpreted with Gulzar\u2019s own lyrics. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I found a slightly varied version of Ghalib\u2019s \u201cJee dhoondta hai phir wohi fursat ke raat din\u201d placed next to \u201cJaadon ki sard dhoop aur aangan mein let kar\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mausam<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and \u201cIshq par zor nahi, hai ye woh aatish \u2018Ghalib\u2019\/jo lagaaye na lage aur bujhaye na bujhe\u201d woven into \u201cSatrangi re\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dil Se..<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). I discovered Amir Khusrau when I set out to find a translation for \u201cZihaal-e-miskeen mukun ba-ranjish, bahaal-e-hijra bechara dil hai\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghulami<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and then again when \u201cAye hairat-e-aashiqui\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guru<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) prompted me to seek out the lyrics.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, I\u2019ve never been as excited as when I heard strains of Baba Bulleh Shah resonating from my screen, in the verse \u201cRanjha Ranjha kar di ve main aape Ranjha hoyi\u201d woven into a song from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raavan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a student of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/fixo-kadha-prasad-sikhism-turban-gurdwara\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punjabi literature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and someone who grew in Punjab, I\u2019ve always had a strong affinity for Sufi poets. From Baba Farid to Waris Shah, I love them all. For me, the most appealing aspect of Pujabi Sufi Kalaam is its simplicity and sincerity. You never have to struggle to understand it because the imagery is all around you.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one thing that Gulzar and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/the-garbage-collector-poetry-in-trash\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who found a place in his lyrics have in common is their ability to express without sounding complex. There is a familiarity to their words. They took everyday things and conversations and turned them into fine poetry. With Gulzar, it works the other way around too. I read a signboard that says \u201cMehrauli\u201d and all I can think of is \u201cChalta hai Mehrauli mein par ghoda apna Arbi hai\u201d and I can almost never pick up a newspaper without humming \u201cAkhbaar ki sab surkhiyaan hum gungunayenge\u201d. Even a simple gesture of putting a hand over the eyes brings to mind \u201cMoondi moondi akhiyon se dekhna, haath ki aad se\u201d. A dear friend and fellow Gulzar follower, never fails to remark \u201cDil ki baat na poocho, dil toh aata rahega\u201d whenever matters of love are discussed. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is this simplicity, this everydayness that makes his work so easy to relate to, quote, and discover. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet\u2019s go to Ballimaaran tomorrow,\u201d I implored a friend recently, and on being rebuked, once again decided to walk the narrow streets alone. As I walked on, I hummed what I\u2019ve hummed every time I\u2019ve stepped foot in the area since 2005:<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tujhse milna purani Dilli mein<\/span><\/i>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chhod aaye nishaani Dilli mein<\/span><\/i>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ballimaaran se Daribe talak<\/span><\/i>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teri meri kahani Dilli mein<\/span><\/i>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With Gulzar, the more you discover, the more you crave.
