After our dismal ranking of 138 out of 180 on the World Press Freedom Index, the most recent shockwave to send tremors through the foundations of the fourth pillar has been the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/article\/889026\/resignations-of-two-journalists-at-abp-news-cause-disquiet-in-newsrooms-and-far-beyond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-profile resignation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of two members of ABP News\u2019 editorial team. The exodus began on Wednesday, when the channel announced that its editor-in-chief Milind Khandekar was resigning after holding the post for 14 years. Shortly after, news anchor Punya Prasun Bajpai also made his exit from the channel, while another anchor, Abhisar Sharma, was \u201csent on leave\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, the channel ran a story on Bajpai\u2019s primetime show <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masterstroke<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about a farmer named Chandramani Kaushik from Chhattisgarh, and how she\u2019d been tutored to exaggerate claims about the profits she\u2019d from her crops during a video interaction with PM Narendra Modi. When Union Ministers Raghavendra Rathore and Nirmala Sitharaman challenged the reports on Twitter, ABP News ran <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/abpnewshindi\/status\/1016574039035293697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a follow-up story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, refuting the BJP\u2019s rebuttals. Soon after, broadcasts of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masterstroke <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">began facing disruptions, with signal disappearing during the show\u2019s airtime. It was not long after that Khandekar and Bajpai parted ways with the channel.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The controversial context to their exits \u2013 there are already murmurs that they have nothing to do with the Chhattisgarh stories \u2013 has prompted concerns about the health of journalism in the country. It\u2019s obviously possible that the link between them is correlative, not causative. But fears that the free press is no longer free, that speaking truth to power is an exercise in futility or worse, a self-destructive endeavour, have predated the immediate context. Look no further than the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/reject-allegations-against-amit-shahs-son-says-minister-piyush-goyal-1760231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defamation case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> filed against The Wire in the Supreme Court after they reported on Jay Shah\u2019s disproportionate assets. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At times like these, it\u2019s important to hold on to the moments when the Indian media did display a backbone. While there\u2019s no denying that India is hardly a journalistic utopia, it\u2019s moments like these and other instances of reporters digging out the truth to inform the public despite the cost to themselves that prove there is still hope for Indian democracy\u2019s fourth pillar. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>It takes a brave person to be a journalist in this country.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/tales-from-the-encrypted\/aadhar-number-india-pan-applications-tax-returns-finance-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aadhaar <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">security debate is as much a part of household dinner tables as yellow dal, but it was Rachna Khaira, a reporter for Chandigarh newspaper The Tribune, who first uncovered how the biometric data could be accessed for as low as \u20b9500 in January. She had an FIR filed against her for her trouble, but did not let that cow her in the slightest, continuing to highlight the flaws in the Aadhaar\u2019s security.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes a brave person to be a journalist in this country. Exposing political scams or challenging powerful interests can often end in tragedy, as we\u2019ve been reminded recently with the cold-blooded daylight killings of editors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/dissent-mother-tongue-gauri-lankesh-activist-bjp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gauri Lankesh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Karnataka and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/doodle\/weapons-of-mass-dissent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shujaat Bhukari<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Kashmir. Yet, it\u2019s the efforts of investigative journalists and activists that unearthed India\u2019s embarrassing treasure of scams, and there have been instances where even Chief Ministers have had to step down after journalists discovered the skeletons in their closet \u2013 Ashok Chavan\u2019s Adarsh scam, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/person-of-the-week-karnataka-cm-bs-yeddyurappa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BS Yeddyurappa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s land scam, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/jayalalithaa-afterlife-amma-aiadmk-politics-india-tamil-nadu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jayalalithaa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s disproportionate assets case; corrupt undertakings that ended with the perpetrators resigning from their posts.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most high-profile instance of Indian journalism speaking truth to power has to be the 1987 Bofors case, where the public became first acquainted with the staggering levels of corruption that had seeped into the Indian administration. Undoubtedly, The Hindu\u2019s expos\u00e9 on the Bofors scam affected the then-PM Rajiv Gandhi\u2019s fortunes in the next elections, and he lost his seat. While the events at ABP News might imply that criticising the PM is taboo in our country, it has been done before \u2013 and could easily happen again.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the darkest period for India\u2019s press, the Emergency, which lasted from 1975 to 1977, had its bright spots. A first-person recollection of those years by journalist and editor Kalpana Sharma <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/article\/735844\/himmat-during-the-emergency-when-the-press-crawled-some-refused-to-even-bend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recounts <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how journalists were pushing the envelope and testing how far the censors would let them go even in those authoritarian times. In closing, she asks a pointed and pertinent question, given the atmosphere around press freedom in the country today, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If even under overt censorship, some publications managed to communicate the truth to their readers, why can\u2019t journalists do it under the indirect forms of control that exist today?\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s press might be facing a crisis, but it has bounced back from much worse in the past.
