Its stellar set of protagonists, led by \u201ctragedy queen\u201d Meena Kumari, had such eventful and poignant lives that it is impossible to part her character in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakeezah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1972) from what was unfolding in her real life. According to Bollywood lore, the film\u2019s director, the legendary Kamal Amrohi, wanted to emulate Shah Jahan and erect a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/taj-mahal-monument-dalmia-bharat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taj Mahal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for his Mumtaz, Meena Kumari \u2013 and the heartachingly beautiful <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakeezah <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was his eternal tribute.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a no-brainer that a romantic-film nut like me would take to the film as a fish to water&#8230; or a leading actress to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/arre-checklist-daaru-and-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakeezah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also the foundation of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/modern-family-cinema-hall-movies-kaho-na-pyaar-hai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family bond<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A love for the film is a kind of family heirloom, passed on from my nani to my mother to me. Before writing this, I called my mom, to clarify a few things. \u201cDon\u2019t you mess this up,\u201d she warned me. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I must have been about six, when I first heard my mum humming the refrain to \u201cChalte chalte\u201d. This little ritual would usually be followed up by dad responding with a teasing \u201cWah Sahibjaan!\u201d This confused me, mostly because my naani was named Sahib Kaur. What was dad even up to? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a 10-year-old Chandigarh adolescent, I finally decided to ask mom what was going on. She in turn, decided I was old enough to be introduced to the film she loves with all her heart.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakeezah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was Meena Kumari\u2019s last film and the one she is most remembered for. It follows the journey of the courtesan Sahibjaan, born to Nargis (both played by Meena Kumari), who one day discovers a note left behind for her by a stranger, Salim (Raaj Kumar). As Sahibjaan falls in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/what-is-love-relationship-long-distance-breakup\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what can best be described as an illusion, her life takes a turn that puts her face-to-face with Salim. As he prepares to marry Sahibjaan, history repeats itself \u2013 the same Hakim Saab who had objected to her mother\u2019s marriage, refuses to allow Sahibjaan\u2019s marriage to Salim.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Just like her on-screen character, Meena Kumari had likely \u201cdestroyed\u201d herself for the man she loved.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I didn\u2019t really understand <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakeezah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back then, but I watched with complete and utter fascination. I marvelled at Nargis, the golden-haired woman and her beautiful light-coloured eyes, was heartbroken when she died, and ecstatic when she returned, even more beautiful. She dresses in some of the most amazing clothes I\u2019d ever seen, her jewels sparkled, and she danced. So of course, I wanted to be her. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No sooner was the film over, that I demanded a dupatta with shiny borders and insisted on getting my ears pierced. My mother knew then that the lifelong romance she and her mother had had with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakeezah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, had passed on to me.<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-37634\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1533110900.jpg\" alt=\"Meena_Kumari_Pakeezah\" width=\"724\" height=\"407\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>I understand Nargis\u2019s willingness to waste away and Sahibjaan\u2019s need to run and watch a train pass by.<\/p>\n<p>Image Credits: Mahal Pictures<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakeezah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once a month has become a ritual for the two of us, even though we\u2019re in separate cities. We decide the date and time, exchange notes over the phone, and tune in at the same time, sitting with our cups of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/teabags-tea-cutting-chai-chaiwalla-adrak\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a plate of biscuits. In 22 years, nothing changes. My heart still breaks when Nargis dies; I still fervently wish her letter hadn\u2019t gotten so delayed. I want to scream at Hakim Saab for being so hateful and regressive, I hate Salim for agreeing to marry someone else, and I cry tears of joy when Sahibjaan finally gets her happy ending. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, nani, mum, and I would watch the film together, to revel in the tragedy of Meena Kumari. \u201cVekh bechaari nu. Kinni dukhi ae (Poor thing, she\u2019s so upset),\u201d naani would say as Sahibjaan would end her dance performance at Salim\u2019s impending wedding and fall down with bloodsoaked feet. Mom and I would agree. We never had the heart to tell her that it is actually Padma Khanna doing all the dancing and the grieving and the dramatic falling. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After over two decades, I understand the essence of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakeezah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the love and longing. I know that love comes with its set of complications and you can either choose to forget and move on, or hold on with one tiny hope. I understand Nargis\u2019s willingness to waste away and Sahibjaan\u2019s need to run and watch a train pass by. Most of all, I understand that love stories and the eternal hope of both a mother and a daughter can be encapsulated in \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shab-e-intezaar\u00a0aakhir kabhi hogi\u00a0muktasar\u00a0bhi (This long night of waiting will someday shorten).\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isn\u2019t that what Nargis and Sahibjaan were eventually hoping for? For their wait to end, and their lives to begin? Isn\u2019t that what all of us hope for? \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/childrens-day-90s-kids-childhood-nostalgia-mr-bean-shin-chan-cartoon-network-wwe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grew up in the \u201990s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and my peers don\u2019t really believe in waiting. Everything, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/newness-nicholas-hoult-laia-costa-drake-doremous-dating-apps-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relationships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is instant. \u201cKaun time waste kare?\u201d, is one of my closest friend\u2019s favourite refrain, and even as a married woman, she keeps saying this, refusing to make any exceptions for her husband.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My mother, on the other hand, gets it. On a trip to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/lucknow-muslim-city-diversity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucknow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2004, as she and I walked around the Bara Imambara, I teased her with, \u201cAaj kal saare shehr ko yeh aag lagi hui hai\u201d (a reference to what the tongawallah tells the flamboyant Nawab Zafar Ali Khan about Sahibjaan). For some reason, she vaguely mentioned a \u201cmedical student\u201d who she once liked, but things hadn\u2019t really gone the way they\u2019d planned. \u201cWere you dating,\u201d I asked incredulous, and she said, \u201cYeh sab nahi hota tha humaare time mein. Papaji and Biji would\u2019ve sent me to the pind.\u201d Turns out, there was no <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/dating-in-your-30s-ex-girlfriends\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, just a vague promise of talking to the \u201cgharwaale\u201d once studies were done and his medical practice is set up. Obviously, that never happened.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mom says she never gave it a second thought, and maybe she didn\u2019t, but I like to think of a 21-year-old girl, looking out the window of her first floor bedroom in Chandigarh\u2019s Sector 35. Would she have held on to the promise, like Sahibjaan holds on to the note? Did her heart break the way Nargis\u2019 breaks when Shahabuddin disappoints her? Is that when she started to sing \u201cChalte Chalte\u201d? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many would argue that Nargis and Sahibjaan are crazy women, especially in today\u2019s times when logic dictates all. Why was there a constant need to try and sacrifice everything, including the self, at the so-called altar of love? Why didn\u2019t Nargis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/fairy-tales-indian-feminist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fight for her rights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that of her daughter? Why, like her mother, Sahibjaan decides to keep Salim\u2019s honour intact as she declares \u201cAaj hum apni duaaon ka asar dekhenge\u201d but not once tried to reveal her identity?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe because the real message of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakeezah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that love transcends logic. At least that\u2019s how I understand it, even though I can see that the film is a testament to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/abusive-marriage-women-domestic-violence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abusive relationships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where women are always the casualty.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, I\u2019ve read about Kamal Amrohi and Meena Kumari\u2019s love story from many different perspectives. A few years ago, after one ritualistic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakeezah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> watching with mom, I asked her about it, and she was quick to connect the film with Meena Kumari\u2019s life. Just like her on-screen character, Meena Kumari had likely \u201cdestroyed\u201d herself for the man she loved. Did that really happen? Maybe. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/love-heartbreak-devdas-dev-d-yash-raj-half-girlfriend-nicholas-sparks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broken heart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can kill you. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lately, I find myself wondering how things would\u2019ve been different if Meena had lived to see how she made Sahibjaan an icon that people everywhere, including me, worship. Would she have given her opinion on what love meant to Sahibjaan, and by extension, her? Maybe. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or maybe she would\u2019ve written a poem about it.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meena Kumari&#8217;s Pakeezah is the foundation of a family bond.
