Long Live Snapchat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">A<\/span><\/p><\/div><p> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> few months ago, boredom found me surfing through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/to-facebook-or-not\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I landed upon a status posted by a college senior, which read, \u201cI had the most lit Ola ride this morning. Add me on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/geny-snapchat-story\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snapchat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to share my happiness.\u201d Usually, statuses like this can be waved off as just another drop in the online ocean, but the comments section was full of gems like these. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBro Snapchat is dead.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cListen yaa, nobody Snaps anymore.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUncleji, kids these days don\u2019t use snapchat. #rekt.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The demise of Snapchat was announced by those who once swore by it \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/helicopter-parents-indian-millennials-dependency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millennials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having used it all through my college years, I was no stranger to the addictive confines of the Snapchat universe. Maybe this is why I couldn\u2019t help but wonder how <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/snapchat-india-evan-spiegel-controversy-boycott-snapchat-twitter-gordon-ramsay\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snapchat <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had met such a dire end.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was only in 2014, when all of India was talking about the saffron wave, we were lost in a simple world of disappearing pictures. A world where people didn\u2019t worry about flawless selfies, curated captions, or how many views their posts received. It was a world for friends who revelled in distracting each other with ugly selfies of dangling triple-chins, people who fancied having dog ears, and anyone who thought playing 10-second clips in slo-mo is funny. It was a brand new, shiny, digital toy and we had just begun to discover its various features. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Snapchat\u2019s world of disappearing pictures that was once manna for the masses, was no longer fascinating.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a world where the prying eyes of parents and relatives had creeped into our Facebook timelines, Snapchat was a happy place for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/international-youth-day-millennial-generation-gen-x-social-media\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millennials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to project #moods and #feels. While Facebook was rife with crude requests for \u201cbobs and vagene\u201d, Snapchat provided us the polite alternative, \u201csend n00dz\u201d. It taught us that HACKED was the funniest inside joke and Snap Streaks were a global phenomenon. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a generation distinguished by its constant need to capture the world in a screen, while simultaneously experiencing the world through one, Snapchat was more hip than Elon Musk and gluten-free parfait. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as Elon Musk can tell you himself, the highest heights lead to the hardest falls. The Snapchat story was DOA once <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/facebook-algorithm-family-mark-zuckberg\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> acquired Instagram. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The photo-sharing app released the Boomerang and Snapchat feature, sliding into Snapchat\u2019s territory like a boorish uncle on the local train seat. Snapchat\u2019s world of disappearing pictures that was once manna for the masses, was no longer fascinating. With everything that made Snapchat so unique now also being offered by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/instagram-snapchat-india-jaipur-social-media-celebrity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the one-of-a-kind experience was lost. Meanwhile, it\u2019s douchey CEO Evan Spiegel invoked the wrath of the Indian online troll army when he referred disparagingly to India as a \u201cpoor\u201d country, leading to the app being furiously reviewed and rated poorly online by thousands of Indian users. But it wasn\u2019t until early 2018 that the app suffered the unkindest cut. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, after Snapchat released a new update, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/kylie-jenner-kardashian-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kylie Jenner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> put up a tweet which read, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me&#8230; ugh this is so sad.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aftermath of this tweet was the exodus of millions of users from the app, as if the backlash from regular users about the new update wasn\u2019t enough. Then, to make matters worse, in April, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/oceans-8-trailer-sandra-bullock-mindy-kaling-rihanna-anne-hathaway-hollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rihanna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took to Instagram to call out Snapchat on an ad, for a game called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2018\/03\/12\/snapchat-ad-slap-rihanna-punch-chris-brown\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would You Rather<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which asked users if they would rather \u201cslap Rihanna\u201d or \u201cpunch Chris Brown\u201d. This ad, referencing the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4298397\/chris-brown-rihanna-assault-trailer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incident when Rihanna\u2019s former boyfriend Chris Brown physically assaulted her<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was reported for being insensitive about domestic violence, and taken off the platform immediately. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the damage had already been done. Snapchat, by then, was past the point of no return. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verge <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">essay titled \u2018The Decline Of Snapchat and the Secret Joy of Internet Ghost Towns\u201d, the writer says, \u201cPeople began <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaving Snapchat because it became difficult to use, disrupting the expectations and patterns that users had built up over time, making the experience a flailing one where it was impossible to find what you actually wanted to see.\u201d And while that remains a concern, the writer also goes on to explain how Snapchat feels like a dead space on the internet, a place people have increasingly forgotten.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Snapchat lays buried with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/the-pursuit-of-online-happiness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orkut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Myspace, and Yahoo Messenger, my Facebook feed presents another status from my senior which reads, \u201cMoving to Instagram! #YASSKWEEN!\u201d I can\u2019t help but think about how the once-pervasive photo-sharing app met its end at the hands of millennials who flock to new technology like sheep to an open field. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farewell, Snapchat, old friend. You showed us we could be productive, colourful individuals.
