Answering a query about his supporting role in <\/span>Sanju<\/span><\/i><\/a> and whether it had enough scope for him to impact the story, he said, \u201cIf I am salt, do I need to be the right amount of salt in a dish or do I need to be the most overpowering ingredient? Isn\u2019t it more important for the dish to be delicious? …You just need to be one of the spices.\u201d <\/span>\n\nTrue to his word, Kaushal stuck to that exact brief as Kamlesh \u201cKamli\u201d Kanhaiyalal Kapasi in <\/span>Rajkumar Hirani\u2019s<\/span><\/a> Sanju<\/span><\/i> \u2013 possibly 2018\u2019s biggest and most successful film \u2013 playing best friend and second fiddle to <\/span>Ranbir Kapoor\u2019s<\/span><\/a> Dutt. In a film, where he had more screen time than the female leads and Paresh Rawal, Kaushal still made an impact in the backdrop. You don\u2019t notice him overtly, but his absence would be sorely missed \u2013 just like salt. <\/span>\n\nSanju\u2019s<\/span><\/i> best scene involved Kaushal. Evoking helplessness and haunting anguish, Kamlesh makes an impassioned plea to Sunil Dutt to save his drug-addled son. With a quivering voice and a moist face, Kamli breaks down unashamedly in front of him mourning the loss of his friend\u2019s youth, hoping that <\/span>Sanju<\/span><\/a> doesn\u2019t self-destruct. It\u2019s also the only time <\/span>Sanju <\/span><\/i>manages to evoke any organic empathy for the film\u2019s lead or bring across a son\u2019s tragedy of living up to a <\/span>father\u2019s<\/span><\/a> unmatchable legacy.<\/span>\n\nKaushal elevates the moment \u2013 he doesn\u2019t become the moment, a trait that is consistent even in the flashier moments in <\/span>Sanju<\/span><\/i>. Even while Kaushal is making a statement with Kamli\u2019s high-pitched<\/span> Gujarati<\/span><\/a> accent or wearing a flamboyant red fur jacket, he is acutely aware of how much space and attention he should rightfully command. That trait is visible even in Anurag Kashyap\u2019s Manmarziyaan<\/em><\/a>, where he plays the film’s most flashy protagonist.<\/span>\n

In the former, he exercises restraint while articulating a lifetime\u2019s worth of affection, grief, and regret in the film\u2019s searing confrontational scene. And in the latter, he affords Kiara Advani the space to breathe out her<\/span> sexual frustration<\/span><\/a> despite essaying the deeply watchable stereotype of the oblivious <\/span>Indian man<\/span><\/a> (with impeccable comic timing). <\/span>\n\nThis restraint is also why I suspect, the actor outperforms in ensemble films and multi-narratives, environments that demand creative frugality. Where seasoned actors fumble to not overplay their hand. It\u2019s the reason why <\/span>stars<\/span><\/a> rarely make decent supporting actors, undermining throwaway scenes only because they\u2019re used to elaborate sequences being crafted around them. But Kaushal thrives in this universe \u2013 best evidenced in his breakout role in the stunning <\/span>Masaan<\/span><\/i>, the actor’s debut.<\/span>\n\nMasaan <\/span><\/i>remains<\/span>\u00a0the pinnacle of Kaushal\u2019s unassuming brilliance. Even when the <\/span>grief-stricken<\/span><\/a> Deepak utters \u201cSaala, yeh dukh kaahe khatam nahi hota bey\u201d after drunk shayari and a searching look up at the sky, howling his despair into an uncaring universe, Kaushal doesn\u2019t lose sense of the <\/span>moment\u2019s sanctity.<\/span><\/a> It exists beyond his heart-wrenching act: an evocative and disquieting reminder that not everyone can afford the luxury of escapism. <\/span>\n\nIt\u2019s evident that what makes Vicky Kaushal stand out is that he plays every role like a supporting one. But that would be underestimating his talent and denying the beauty of his self-control.
