{"id":2946,"date":"2016-04-20T16:59:29","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T11:29:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=2946"},"modified":"2026-07-17T20:18:37","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T14:48:37","slug":"killing-eve-sandra-oh-jodi-comer-bad-girls-tv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=2946","title":{"rendered":"Why We Need More Bad Girls on TV"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">E<\/span>ven eight episodes in, Phoebe Waller-Bridge\u2019s delightful <\/p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing Eve <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remains unclassifiable: It\u2019s at once a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/office-air-conditioner-cold-war\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workplace <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comedy, gritty police procedural, sexually charged <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/gay-dumbledore-fantastic-beasts-lgbt-superheroes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">queer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> love affair, and an intense portrait of sociopathy. But what makes the show truly stand out is how cleverly it subverts a testosterone-fuelled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/punjab-elections-india-pakistan-salman-khan-aap-aam-admi-party-akali-dal-james-bond-dadwan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> genre and feminises it: an overworked female spy chases a glamorous female assassin in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing Eve.<\/span><\/i>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even more refreshing is the fact that the show goes a step further and makes both these women utterly terrifying and impossibly unlikeable. And, by extension, deeply watchable. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a time when the Hollywood manual of flawed women hardly goes beyond one-dimensional stereotypes \u2013 all-out craziness (Amy in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gone Girl)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sporadic rebellion (Christine in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/lady-bird-saoirse-ronan-greta-gerwig-mother-daughter\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ladybird<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/teetotallers-alcohol-drinking-tea\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcoholism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Kym in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rachel Getting Married<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 the consistent complexity of the two female leads in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eve<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feels especially resounding. More so, because the show eschews the trope of justifying the actions of \u201cunlikeable leads\u201d, or have them demand affection or sympathy. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a new way to look at flawed women on screen \u2013 and we\u2019re watching with a lot of excitement. Especially since this difficult-to-slot show has garnered Sandra Oh an Emmy nomination, making her the first Asian actress to be nominated for Lead Actress (Drama).<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-36799\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1531420143.jpg\" alt=\"Killing Eve\" width=\"723\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\nAs <em>Killing Eve<\/em> progresses, it\u2019s evident why despite their cat-and-mouse game, Eve and Villanelle become obsessed with each other. They\u2019re after all, two sides of the same coin.\n\nImage credit: BBC America\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing Eve<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the titular protagonist (Sandra Oh) is a disgruntled and desk-bound MI5 security officer who gets surreptitiously promoted as an off-the-books MI6 intelligence operative. Her position is triggered by her meticulous deduction at a top-secret meeting, where she claims that the killer \u2013 responsible for a trail of high-profile murders, including the recent death of a well-guarded victim \u2013 had to be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/womens-day-tawaif-mumbai-brothels-prostitution\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">woman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. How else can someone get close to the victim in public without being considered a threat, she argues.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eve\u2019s nemesis is Villanelle (Jodi Comer), the high-flying and terrifying psychopath who kills her victims like a soulless maniac and whose eyes scream<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/suicide-point-vashi-bridge-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The kind of assassin whose gender doesn\u2019t stop her from relishing her inherent brutality. Whether it is casually asking a target the name of the designer who designed his silk bedsheet before gouging his eyes out. Or chillingly threatening another, \u201cI\u2019m going to kill you nicely. But then I\u2019m going to make a mess of your body afterward so it looks worse than it is. Just letting you know, okay?\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the show progresses, it\u2019s evident why despite their cat-and-mouse game, Eve and Villanelle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/lgbtq-lesbian-gay-lesbian-love-story-valentines-day-kiss-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">become obsessed <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with each other. They\u2019re after all, two sides of the same coin: women whose lonely lives feel reinvigorated when they chase their respective targets. Women who\u2019re hardly bothered about being likeable. Women who wear their vulnerabilities and ruthlessness on their sleeves, refusing to be trapped by their conscience.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing Eve<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, doesn\u2019t just build a world where its female leads call the shots without making a big deal of it, but also wholeheartedly embraces unlikeable women in their flawed glory. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not the first time Waller-Bridge has been credited with reclaiming the \u201cunlikeable female lead\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Back in 2016, she created, wrote, and starred in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleabag<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a show that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2016\/09\/26\/fleabag-an-original-bad-girl-comedy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Yorker <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labelled an \u201coriginal bad-girl comedy\u201d and which gave us the most affecting and repulsive female TV lead in recent times. In the show, the unnamed British protagonist (nicknamed Fleabag) is mourning the death of her best friend, even while struggling with urban loneliness, aftermath of trauma, and repressed resentment. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-36798\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1531420150.jpg\" alt=\"Killing Eve\" width=\"723\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\nIt\u2019s telling that in the last couple of years, TV has seen a spate of flawed and complex female leads, including the arrogant Ruth in <em>GLOW<\/em>.\n\nImage credit: Netflix\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleabag is depicted as a fucked-up person who derives pleasure from making people around her wince in abject pain \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ne who wears her selfishness with as much as swag as a Gucci overcoat. There\u2019s absolutely nothing about her that is redeemable, and yet, by refusing to manipulate sympathy from the audience, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleabag <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argues that female leads don\u2019t need to be likeable to be lovable. Just like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing Eve<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it attempts to ask: Why should women be burdened with upholding every possible virtue on the planet?<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing Eve\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s leads aren\u2019t alone. It\u2019s telling that in the last couple of years, TV has seen a spate of flawed and complex female leads: a cheating June\/Offred in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/the-handmaids-tale-margaret-atwood-elisabeth-moss-golden-globes\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an unpleasant Alyssa in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The End of The F***ing World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Mickey in<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who\u2019s a straight-up asshole, the fucked up, angry Jen in <em>Dead to Me<\/em>, and the arrogant Ruth in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLOW<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orange is the New Black\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Piper Chapman has steadily traversed the journey over seven seasons from nice white woman to hateful lead who brings out her worst traits.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s striking though, is that none of these leads are painted as either heroes or villains. Instead, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their snarky, egotistical, and emotionally detached personalities are portrayed as a vital part of their identities. Just like how TV has been depicting male leads, who\u2019d been afforded the exclusive hall-pass to veer into various shades of assholery and still be heartthrobs for years. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/hugh-laurie-house-md-sherlock-terminator-clint-eastwood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr House<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">House<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Sherlock Holmes in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/sherlock-bbc-benedict-cumberbatch-john-watson-steven-moffat-mark-gatiss-sir-arthur-conan-doyle\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sherlock<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Patrick Jane in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mentalist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> If anything, it\u2019s liberating to watch female leads act out without being mandated to apologise for their outburst minutes later.\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More importantly, the unanimous critical and public popularity of these shows (including Emmy nominations for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing Eve<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLOW,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is testament to the fact that there\u2019s nothing more fun than watching women being absolute jerks \u2013 and absolutely human \u2013 on screen. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killing Eve<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is any indication, we\u2019re thankfully past niceness.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Killing Eve and GLOW have proved, there\u2019s nothing more fun than watching women being absolute jerks \u2013 and absolutely human \u2013 on screen.
