{"id":2874,"date":"2016-03-09T09:19:56","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T03:49:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=2874"},"modified":"2026-07-17T20:16:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T14:46:14","slug":"set-it-up-netflix-rom-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=2874","title":{"rendered":"Netflix\u2019s Set It Up Puts the Romance Back in the Rom-Com"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">B<\/span><\/p><\/div><p>ack in 2011, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/goodbye-the-mindy-project-mindy-kaling-mindy-lahiri-hulu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindy Kaling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the creator and star of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mindy Project<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2011\/10\/03\/flick-chicks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about how romantic comedies were her favourite kind of movies. \u201cI regard romantic comedies as a subgenre of sci-fi, in which the world operates according to different rules than my regular human world. For me, there is no difference between Ripley from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alien<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and any Katherine Heigl character. They are equally implausible. They\u2019re all participating in a similar level of fakey razzle-dazzle, and I enjoy every second of it,\u201d she wrote. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an incurable fan of romantic comedies (who, like, Kaling is the Sandra Bullock of her life\u2019s film), I related hard to her piece. Especially when she savagely broke down how rom-coms have always saddled women with the most unoriginal tropes \u2013 but most when she stressed how embarrassing it felt to admit that she enjoyed rom-coms. \u201cSaying you like romantic comedies is essentially an admission of mild stupidity,\u201d she said, referring to how fluffy the genre had become in the last 20 years, making it almost impossible to champion.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why Netflix\u2019s recent rom-com <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set It Up, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">directed by<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claire Scanlon,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is such a breath of fresh air. It\u2019s more than possible to like its self-aware antics, and still enjoy the earnestness of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/brief-romance-connections-romance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">romance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The film infuses new energy into a genre that has been reduced to a heap of unremarkable cliches.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rom-coms pretty much defined mainstream cinema in the \u201990s with classics like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Harry Met Sally<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve Got Mail<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepless in Seattle,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Fine Day<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerry Maguire<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over the years though, all we had were gimmicky Valentine\u2019s Day offerings, one indistinguishable from the next. This was the golden age of Katherine Heigl in a variety of \u201clost girl\u201d roles and none of the fun that defined the genre. In the last couple of years, Hollywood studios have backed even fewer rom-coms, with only Amy Schumer\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trainwreck<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and last year\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Sick<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making a splash. And, even then, they were unable to garner that wholesome appeal of a romantic comedy.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p><em>Set It Up <\/em>exists as a canny tribute to the rom-coms of yesteryear, hitting a sweet, nostalgic feel-good spot. <\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set It Up<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> differs. At first pass,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it boasts of the usual rom-com suspects: a feel-good poster with shiny, smiling leads. A cheesy title and an inoffensive tagline (\u201cFinding love takes some assistants!\u201d) and most importantly the backdrop of New York. And even though it harks back to a simpler, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/la-la-land-review-ryan-gosling-emma-stone-oscars-damien-chazelle-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uncomplicated era<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when a rom-com didn\u2019t need gimmicky elements like an illness (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Big Sick<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or a jungle kidnap (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snatched),<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the film is also a modern update on the genre. <\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set It Up<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revolves around two young, overworked and underpaid assistants, Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) who hatch a plot to trick their overbearing bosses into falling in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/what-is-love-relationship-long-distance-breakup\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You already know where this is going. Some plot contrivances follow, including a hilarious scene where Harper and Charlie engineer an elevator shutdown to ensure that the bosses meet each other. Except, it goes awfully wrong, features urine, and a wonderful cameo by<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tituss Burgess.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever wondered whether it was possible to pull off a millennial iteration of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Harry Met Sally<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set It Up<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes very, very close. It exists as a canny tribute to the rom-coms of yesteryear, hitting a sweet, nostalgic feel-good spot. Leads featuring a \u201ctomboy\u201d and the guy next door? Check. Squabbling-friends-turned-lovers trope? Check. A meet-cute? Check. Quick repartee? Check. Uncomplicated, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/dating-in-your-30s-ex-girlfriends\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unlikeable exes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Check. And yet with all the reasons to not love them, they still do. It\u2019s a common presence in most romantic declarations (think <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Harry Met Sally<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes this film all the more charming, despite its familiar setting and predictable proceedings, are its subtle contemporary touches. The stunted ambition of millennials that are a result of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/indians-overworked-work-life-balance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demanding jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. An almost non-existent love life. Reliance on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/newness-nicholas-hoult-laia-costa-drake-doremous-dating-apps-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dating apps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The film\u2019s female lead making the most of her assistant salary by calling for free chips at the neighbourhood bar. The insistence that a lover needs to be a friend first. A diverse cast (although the leads are still white). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But most importantly an actual interest in the professional aspirations of its female leads. In the film, Harper\u2019s boss (Lucy Liu) is a sports journalist who\u2019s shown as someone who\u2019s the best at her job and an actual role model for her young assistant, even when she is channelling Meryl Streep in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Devil Wears Prada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What\u2019s even greater than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set It Up<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking her ambitions seriously, is the fact that it never asks her to choose between her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/millennials-job-work-culture-generation-gap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and love. Harper can undoubtedly have it all.
