Y<\/span>esterday, in a packed early morning show, I watched <\/p>Sanju<\/span><\/i> with a sense of familiar anticipation. Of course, I was curious to see what <\/span>Rajkumar Hirani<\/span><\/a> would make of his source material \u2013 Sanjay Dutt\u2019s fascinating and chequered life \u2013 but the reason I\u2019d turned up was <\/span>Ranbir Kapoor<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>\n\nAlmost two years ago, when the first teaser of <\/span>Karan Johar\u2019s<\/span><\/a> Ae Dil Hai Mushkil <\/span><\/i>released, it started on a very un-Dharma note: a close-up of its lead mouthing lyrics and staring into the camera. <\/span>\n\nInsipid \u2013 except when the lead is Ranbir Kapoor and his achingly expressive face. Kapoor looks at the camera and gives it one of his trademark vacant stares, his brown eyes brimming with hurt, his face in a mask of steely determination that refuses to allow any loss to overpower his <\/span>love<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>\n\nWhen I watched the teaser for the first time, Kapoor\u2019s ability to command a viewer\u2019s attention with a mundane shot of him just <\/span>lip-syncing<\/span><\/a> to the film\u2019s title track impressed me. But months later when I watched the film, I came out affected by his magnetism. The exact effect that unfailingly accompanies every Ranbir Kapoor outing in recent times. <\/span>\n

Ranbir Kapoor doesn\u2019t just play fictional characters, he recreates them down to the very last detail<\/blockquote>\nIt\u2019s why even his repetitive lost-boy-who-needs-to-be-woken-up feels invigorating every time. Think about it, his manchild act in <\/span>Wake Up Sid<\/span><\/i> is starkly distinct from his Bunny in <\/span>Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani<\/span><\/i><\/a> or even Janardhan from <\/span>Rockstar.<\/span><\/i> Because it always comes on the back of another trademark Kapoor trait: physical acting that rarely hits a false note. Kapoor doesn\u2019t just act or deliver lines. He disseminates the psyche of his characters with every part of his body. Every Kapoor twitch, raised eyebrow, hand movement, or the extent of a smile isn\u2019t incidental. It is intended.<\/span>\n\nThe <\/span>title track of <\/span>Ae Dil Hai Mushkil<\/span><\/i><\/a> lasts a mere three minutes, but you witness every imaginable response to love: gratitude, anger, obsessiveness, affection, crushing loss. For me, the lasting image of the song is a beautiful improvisation where Kapoor acts out the line, \u201cTu mera khuda, tu hi duaa mein shaamil\u201d. The actor looks up at the sky, his eyes dart across as if he\u2019s directly addressing his invisible muse, moulds his face into a half-smile, and tops it off with a slight raise of the eyebrow. It perfectly captures the feeling the whole film falters to evoke.<\/span>\n\nIt\u2019s this captivating ability to infuse every burst of tantrum (<\/span>Tamasha<\/span><\/i>), restlessness (<\/span>Wake Up Sid<\/span><\/i>), an act as unremarkable as tucking in a turban (<\/span>Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year<\/span><\/i>), convenient escapism (<\/span>YJHD<\/span><\/i>), easy tears and feminine gait (Channa Mereya in <\/span>ADHM<\/span><\/i>), and boyish wonder (Barfi!<\/em>and<\/span>Jagga Jasoos<\/span><\/i><\/a>) with an avalanche of emotions that makes the actor stand out. It\u2019s also why even his staunchest fans don\u2019t have favourite Ranbir Kapoor dialogues \u2013 they have favourite Kapoor moments. He gifts his audience the luxury of decoding the emotions playing out on his face. But, most importantly, he laces these emotions with enough history.<\/span>\n\nKapoor doesn\u2019t just play fictional characters, he recreates them down to the very last detail. In a sea of Ranveers and Sushants and Siddharths and Varuns, Ranbir is Ranbir. Even if he hasn\u2019t had a proper hit in years. <\/span>\n\nWe rarely realise that the actor does films that are harder than they look. <\/span>Sanju<\/span><\/i><\/a> for instance, to which Kapoor has given almost two years of his life. Irrespective of where you stand on the film\u2019s whitewashing tactics, Kapoor elevates the biopic to arresting cinema. <\/span>\n\n\"Ranbir\n

Image Credit: Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\nIn an <\/span>interview before the film\u2019s release<\/span><\/a>, Kapoor had revealed that the reason he didn\u2019t want his Dutt rendition to be all-out mimicry, was because he wanted the audience to be acutely aware that it was him playing the star and not the other way around. One week later, he doesn\u2019t just live up to his claim, but also exceeds it. For <\/span>Sanju<\/span><\/i> is where Kapoor\u2019s physical acting hits its peak.<\/span>\n\nThe fact that Kapoor excels at essaying the various facets of the \u201990s superstar for a span of 30 years makes it evident that he\u2019s soaked himself into the aura of his muse. The actor gets his gait, hand movements, careless walk, hunched shoulders, and even his voice down pat. Yet, it\u2019s not his flawless recreation that gets your attention, but his immersive depiction. Whether he\u2019s breaking down in front of his father begging him to save him or facing withdrawals and resisting medication during his <\/span>rehab stint<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\n\nIn the film, the actor employs a unique mish-mash of his two strengths: He uses the mastery over his physicality to paint an evocative picture of Dutt\u2019s mind. He brings out the troubled star\u2019s confusion, his vulnerability, his naivety, his irresponsibility, his guilt, and also his affection. <\/span>\n\nIt\u2019s what made Imitiaz Ali\u2019s <\/span>Tamasha <\/span><\/i><\/a>garner the underground cult appeal that it has today. In the film, the actor tapped into something very innate to compellingly articulate the dichotomy of a man afflicted with <\/span>bipolar tendencies<\/span><\/a>. He allows the audience to almost witness the debate going on in his mind when he knocks outside Tara\u2019s (Deepika Padukone) door after she rejects his proposal. His Ved doesn\u2019t just tell you that he doesn\u2019t want to be a cliche; the kind of man who can\u2019t digest rejection, but shows it. The fact that Ved lashes out isn\u2019t important. Instead the spotlight is on how Kapoor choreographs that moment.<\/span>\n\nJust like his previous films, even Sanju<\/em><\/span> proves that Kapoor is one of those rare actors who guarantees that every movement of his tells a story, even if the screenplay has missed it.
