To me, it felt like justice had finally been served, albeit several years too late. So, imagine my disappointment when I realised that unlike what I thought, she hadn\u2019t actually asked for forgiveness for destroying our collective mental peace with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pyaar Impossible!,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s Your Raashee?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love Story 2050<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, what Priyanka Chopra actually apologised for was the recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/priyanka-chopra-quantico-indian-nationalists-twitter\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quantico<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> episode<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which comprised a plot twist implicating a rudraksha-wearing Hindu terrorist, instead of our usual back-up option aka Pakistanis. In \u201cThe Blood of the Romeo\u201d, Priyanka Chopra\u2019s Alex Parrish thwarts a plan by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/asifa-rape-kashmir-kathua-murder-hindutva\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extremists trying to frame Pakistanis in a terror attack after noticing a \u201crudraksh mala\u201d (Hindu rosary in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quantico<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lingo) on one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/tiger-zinda-hai-movie-review-salman-khan-katrina-kaif-terrorism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terrorists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Seeing that, Parrish naturally comes to the conclusion that the terrorist can\u2019t be Pakistani and has to be Indian. *mic drop*<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wish I had an imagination so vivid that I could make this up, but it\u2019s precisely this \u201cplot twist\u201d that has enraged India. And, not the fact that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quantico <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relies on writing so terrible that it makes nonsensical <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/salman-khan-jail-jodhpur\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salman Khan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> films look extraordinary. Some days, I\u2019m amazed at how we always have our priorities so straight.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unable to fathom Priyanka Chopra unwittingly becoming the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/india-pakistan-spy-kulbhushan-jadhav-indian-navy-isi-intel-agent-china\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakistani<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ambassador instead of stereotyping them, Indians used their handy Hathaway connections to call for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quantico\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boycott on Twitter. (The news that the show has already been cancelled seems to have not reached them yet.) It was obviously accompanied by some trusty Indian outrage riding on the back of our collective favourite hobby: calling a celebrity whose actions have displeased us an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/doodle\/inside-the-mind-of-an-anti-national-hater-gauri-lankesh\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anti-national<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proving that Indians are incapable of separating fact from fiction, our offended sentiments coerced the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2018\/06\/priyanka-chopra-quantico-apology-the-blood-of-romeo-india-1201973201\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">show\u2019s producers to apologise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for trivialising a \u201ccomplex political issue\u201d, stating that Priyanka Chopra was in no way involved in conceiving the episode. If that wasn\u2019t ridiculous enough, the actress too joined the \u201cIs it too late to say sorry?\u201d bandwagon and issued an apology for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quantico <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kerfuffle. \u201cI\u2019m extremely saddened and sorry that some sentiments have been hurt by a recent episode of Quantico. That was not and would never be my intention. I sincerely apologise. I&#8217;m a proud Indian and that will never change,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/priyankachopra\/status\/1005521373756903425?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&#038;ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.indiewire.com%2F2018%2F06%2Fpriyanka-chopra-quantico-apology-the-blood-of-romeo-india-1201973201%2F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, Priyanka Chopra asked forgiveness for a fictional Hindu terrorist and for not relying on the most insensitive trope of reducing Muslims to terrorism. Effectively, she regained her \u201cproud Indian\u201d status once she regretted acting in a show that dared to humanise Pakistan. I mean, how can Hindus even have the time to become terrorists? They\u2019re too busy protecting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/gone-gai-letter-from-an-indian-cow-beef\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s ironic that even as news broke that the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/gauri-lankesh-murder-case-key-accused-points-to-leader-of-hindutva-outfit-5212258\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key accused in Gauri Lankesh\u2019s murder case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be the leader of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/gone-gai-letter-from-an-indian-cow-beef\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindutva outfit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Priyanka Chopra took to endorsing hyper-nationalism. It\u2019s also telling that she\u2019s hardly the first Indian celebrity to have given in to apologising for actions that are neither wrong, or need one, in the first place. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>To Priyanka Chopra, her apology may have been just a tweet, but for Hindu hyper-nationalists, it was a victory.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/karan-johar-birthday-bollywood-an-unsuitable-boy-book-ae-dil-hai-mushkil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karan Johar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for instance. The otherwise blunt director, who is known to have an opinion on pertinent issues, did the exact opposite two years ago before the release of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ae Dil Hai Mushkil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When the hate-laced debate on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/pakistani-artists-cricket-india-vs-new-zealand-dhoni-virat-kohli-fawad-khan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disallowing Pakistani artistes <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from working in Bollywood raged, Johar made a video apologising for casting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kapoor-and-sons-homosexuality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fawad Khan <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in his film. He further promised to never <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/pakistan-uri-india-fawad-khan-mns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work with a Pakistani actor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ever again. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be argued that the director had little choice, given how fringe outfits were threatening to ban his film, but it hardly takes away from the consequences his words may have had. By admitting that what he did was wrong, the director was essentially reiterating exactly what the fringe outfits were espousing: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/gujarat-elections-bjp-narendra-modi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakistanis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not welcome in India. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it asking for too much if we expect someone like Johar, who\u2019s an influential decision-maker, to take some time out from remaking perfectly good films and not give in to hate? Besides reeking of intolerance and unfairness, his apology also represented a dichotomy between what he believes, and what he was forced to believe. But, the worst part was that he was okay with believing that, as long as it benefitted him.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, in admitting a fictional Hindu being a terrorist was inaccurate and implying that she prioritised <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/ae-dil-hai-mushkil-pakistan-narendra-modi-karan-johar-uri-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nationalism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over everything else, Chopra was doing the opposite of what we\u2019ve come to expect out of her: taking a stand. Does she really believe that Indians can\u2019t be involved in a terror attack \u2013 that terrorism is only biased toward one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/choosing-my-religion-hindu-muslim-christianity-atheist-agnostic-hindutva-islam-rss-swami-vivekananda-anti-hindu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">religion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? If that was the case, we\u2019ll need countless apologies for every Christian that Bollywood has portrayed as an alcoholic and every Muslim and Russian they\u2019ve portrayed as gangsters. What&#8217;s saddening is that if there&#8217;s any Indian celebrity who knows how to give it back to the trolls, it&#8217;s none other than Priyanka Chopra<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It then makes you wonder: Are Indian celebrities absolutely incapable of having a spine? Come to think of it, Priyanka Chopra\u2019s apology seems all the more dispiriting in the light of Robert De Niro\u2019s recent speech at the Tony Awards. Taking a firm stand, De Niro started his speech by saying \u201cFuck Trump\u201d, an emotion most Hollywood actors don\u2019t just share, but have also publicity admitted to having. Who can forget Meryl Streep\u2019s rousing speech at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/the-post-spielberg-tom-hanks-media\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">74th Golden Globes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, days after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/donald-trump-kim-jong-twitter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donald Trump<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> assumed presidency and the effect it had? In contrast, Bollywood celebrities feel distant; they feel like people with no beliefs of their own, save for the ones that may help their reputation.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Priyanka Chopra, her apology may have been just a tweet, but for Hindu hyper-nationalists, it was a victory.
