If we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/fitoor-mishra\/raja-hindustani-aamir-khan-karishma-kapoor-kissing-21years-anniversary\/\">kissed<\/a>, I say we made out&#8230;\u201d I recall 12-year-old me relating to this with great joy because in the world that we lived in back then, you always tell when you\u2019ve kissed. Sometimes, you tell even if you haven\u2019t.\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hitting puberty in the noughties came with the pressure of espousing a Barney Stinson-esque take on women. Even though I went to one of the best co-ed schools in the city, I can\u2019t recall a single instance where we were encouraged to better understand the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/the-great-indian-sex-ed-scam-gender-sexual-health-menstruation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opposite sex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, stringent rules like making us sit separately and reprimanding us for being too friendly with them only added to our already vast gender divide. The result? By age 11, most of my guy friends and I had zero empathy for girls. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Girls were recklessly labelled \u201cloose\u201d and \u201ceasy\u201d for things as mundane as the length of their skirts or having too many guy friends. In fact, the length of a girl\u2019s skirt was often indirectly proportional to how much she was gossipped about. The teachers often fuelled the slut-shaming culture by picking these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/ho-ja-regender\/parental-advisory-for-young-girls-button-up-regender-feminism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">girls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out between assembly lines and lectures.<\/span>\n\nWhen I first saw the now viral\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c-yTKIm6OLc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video clip of a woman\u2019s tirade<\/a> against a bunch of young girls in a mall in Gurgaon, I couldn&#8217;t help but think she is a mutant hybrid of many of the callous teachers and authority figures from back in the day. There seems to be a prevalent misogyny among our elders toward any young girl who dares to go against their convention of\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span>decent<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is not a decent way to dress. The boys will stare,\u201d I remember overhearing Mrs Kamath, our sports teacher tell Payal, before one of her tennis practice sessions. That day, Mrs. Kamath unknowingly taught 13-year-old Payal that her comfort and ability to play the game she loves will always remain secondary to her responsibility of avoiding the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/sexual-harassment-women-safety-eve-teasing-india-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">male gaze<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at any cost. Similarly, another classmate Anuja made the grave mistake of wearing a spaghetti top during an educational trip. Her punishment for wanting to stay comfortable in Kerala\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/summer-heat-people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summer heat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? A \u201ccompulsory jacket\u201d rule that Miss Fernandes, our trip coordinator, very publicly enforced upon her. Enduring the searing heat in a denim jacket is a small price to pay to ensure young, pubescent boys aren\u2019t distracted, isn\u2019t it?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was years before \u201cSick Of The Dress Code Mom\u201d Catherine Pearlman\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/community.today.com\/parentingteam\/post\/invitation-for-principal-to-take-my-daughter-shopping-after-dress-code-violation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">viral letter <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to a school principal inviting her take her daughter shopping. Pearlman\u2019s teenage daughter had been told by a teacher that she couldn\u2019t wear yoga pants because the boys would get turned on and then be embarrassed. <\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">By Class 9, I too had begun indulging in casual name-calling and labelling girls as \u201cslutty\u201d or \u201cdesperate\u201d based merely on hearsay.<\/blockquote>\n\u201cI think there are these subtle messages that sort of carry on that we shouldn\u2019t show something. Why shouldn\u2019t we show something? Because something\u2019s wrong with our body,\u201d Pearlman <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2017\/05\/30\/health\/school-dress-codes-body-shaming-girls-parenting\/index.html\">told<\/a> CNN.\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Girls like Payal, Anuja, Pearlman\u2019s daughter, and the girls in the mall are often soft targets for nasty jibes, salacious rumours, and hurtful banter. In school, a lot of times, rumours were spread by other students, often girls about those girls who did not \u201ccover up\u201d. Some acting out of jealousy, others simply succumbing to decades of carefully instilled misogyny from their mothers and grandmothers. I imagine this rumour-mongering being the nascent seeds of future Society Aunty Syndrome. But I didn\u2019t know better back then.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By Class 9, I too had begun indulging in casual name-calling and labelling girls as \u201cslutty\u201d or \u201cdesperate\u201d based merely on hearsay. I attribute a lot of this to my time in our school\u2019s U-14 football team: a gaggle of the most seasoned adolescent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/bro-code-toxic-masculinity-woke-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chauvinists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Our bonding sessions included violent video games and describing in most grotesque detail what the volleyball girls might look like naked. In this little gang of degenerates, kissing and telling wasn\u2019t frowned upon at all; in fact, it was the norm. Nicknames like \u201cHandy Hetal\u201d and \u201cDeti-hai Deeksha\u201d were often coined for girls we\u2019d gotten to second or third base with. Just another case of problematic behaviour masquerading as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/beware-of-the-brocialist-harvey-weinstein-sexism-feminism-gender-femininity-masculinty-metoo-notallmen-bro-code-brocialism-sexual-harassment-harassment-molestation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">locker-room banter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And\u00a0<\/span>some of us don&#8217;t realise the long-lasting effects of slut-shaming until it hits too close to home.\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this changed for me, when I first fell in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/millennial-breakup-grief-dating-love-sex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the curly haired Namrata in my first year of college. As we stood sharing Gini Dosas (a sign of true love in the lanes of Mithibai), Namrata told me about a mean-spirited nickname that the boys in her school had coined for her: \u201cNympho Nammy,\u201d \u00a0a named bestowed upon her when she turned down her ninth grade crush. He told everyone they went all the way anyway. It was a name she never recovered from. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naturally, the desire to fix Namrata fired me through the course of our relationship (an idea that was bound to end in disaster), but I spent two years trying to undo the damage, bring her self-confidence back. It wasn\u2019t love as much as it was my attempt at redemption for all the slut-shaming and nickname-coining that I myself had indulged in, in the past.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t know if things have changed in the co-ed school system since 2008, but instances like this one remind me that there&#8217;s still aunty jis out there who continue to bog down young, confident women with their narrow-minded, vitriolic views. I can only hope that more teachers educate themselves and then their students about how problematic and damaging casual slut-shaming can be an on young women&#8217;s self-esteem. I don&#8217;t dream of a world without Gurgaon aunties; that&#8217;s unrealistic.
