It was the end of a tryst that had lasted over two decades, but I just could not take it anymore. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m talking about the release of 2015\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a reboot of my formerly beloved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/jurassic-park-steven-spielberg-titanic-india-amitabh-bachchan-hollywood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic Park<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> franchise, which plundered the legacy of the original and left long-time fans like me with a bitter aftertaste. Even so, the power of nostalgia prevailed, and $1.6 billion in revenue meant an obligatory sequel was on the cards. As <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> releases today (to largely negative reviews), it\u2019s time to question if the once flourishing franchise should go the way of its top attractions, and embrace extinction.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today my reluctance to watch yet another Jurassic film is as surprising as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/rss-pranab-mukherjee-congress-sharmistha-muherjee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pranab Mukherjee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s decision to accept an RSS invite. Because for me, the original <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic Park<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is more than just a movie. At a time when I was buried under Enid Blyton and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/roald-dahl-day-willy-wonka-charlie-chocolate-factory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roald Dahl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Michael Crichton novel the film is based on, became my first \u201cgrown-up book\u201d. Just like the movie was the first live-action film that replaced Disney cartoons like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lion King<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jungle Book<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For us \u201990s kids, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic Park<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a pop-culture monolith, as popular as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/star-wars-last-jedi-force-awakens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/harry-potter-rowling-homophobia-lgbtq-fanfiction-drarry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry Potter<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/lotr-vs-got-amazon-tv-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lord of the Rings<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The first film spawned two sequels, which released to diminishing returns, and after the fourth film ended up stuck in development hell for over ten years, most of us relegated the ground-breaking classic to the past, content to review it with the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/childrens-day-90s-kids-childhood-nostalgia-mr-bean-shin-chan-cartoon-network-wwe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nostalgia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a potent force. Profit-driven nostalgia even more so. As the millennial generation grew out of adolescence and became young adults facing the stress of having a job and earning a living, we turned to nostalgia to remind us of simpler, happier times. In an article titled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/pop-culture\/2017\/12\/20\/16797242\/nostalgia-brigsby-bear-lady-bird-stranger-things-disaster-artist-the-room\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Nostalgia Took Over 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d culture journalist Alan Seigel posits, \u201cIt makes sense that we\u2019re constantly looking to the past for comfort, hope, and answers. Now that so many of our childhood experiences are digitised, it\u2019s easier than ever to fall down the rabbit hole of nostalgia.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a newly employed generation sought solace in the familiarity of the past, studios and corporations saw a potential goldmine \u2013 and nostalgia was the TNT to blow open the mineshaft. According to Seigel, \u201cNostalgia is an easy sell. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/baywatch-review-priyanka-chopra-zac-efron-the-rock-dudebro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baywatch<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movie was a dud, but it still made nearly $178 million worldwide. The rebooted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/outdoors\/how-i-met-the-mummy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mummy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was so bad that Universal is reportedly abandoning a proposed series of monster flicks \u2013 and it still pulled in $409 million globally.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>The reboot made it clear that the old Jurassic Park was dead and gone, its legacy wiped out by the meteor that was Jurassic World.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Somewhere around the beginning of this decade, long-forgotten properties and franchises were dusted off and trotted out for Round 2. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transformers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/holding-on-to-he-man\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He-Man<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and even Polaroid cameras made a comeback. It was almost as if any trend from the \u201980s and \u201990s was ripe for exploitation. Given the climate, it was only a matter of time before a cultural milestone like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic Park<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was brought back from near-extinction.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was supposed to mark a triumphant return to pop culture relevance for the franchise, and I was salivating at the prospect. Unfortunately, when I finally watched the movie, I found the words of Jeff Goldblum\u2019s Ian Malcolm from the original, ringing in my ears. Speaking to the park\u2019s creator John Hammond about the implicit arrogance that cloning dinosaurs conveys, he says, \u201cYour scientists were so obsessed with whether or not they could, they never stopped to consider if they should.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wish they\u2019d had an iota of the same clarity about themselves.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those words have the same cutting accuracy when considering the glut of nostalgia-driven content flooding our screens today. Obsessed with recapturing the magic of the original, creators can\u2019t leave well enough alone, and the results are often disappointing, like we saw last month with the underwhelming <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spinoff <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/han-solo-star-wars-disappoint-harrison-ford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solo<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a SFX heavy, two-hour-long exercise in self-referencing. Director Colin Trevorrow seemed keener on packing in as many Easter eggs and nudge-and-wink moments as he could, serving as a poor shell of Spielberg\u2019s original. The philosophical treatises on the ethical implications of scientists playing God, the awe-inducing portrayal of nature as a primal, untameable force, the well-researched, nearly plausible science underlying the plot were all missing, replaced by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/generic-superhero-movie-preview-avengers-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cookie-cutter summer blockbuster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with enough nostalgia bait to lure in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic Park<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> faithful.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reboot made it clear that the old <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic Park<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was dead and gone, its legacy wiped out by the meteor that was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As the series departs further from its roots with another schlocky sequel, I keep myself awake at night shuddering over the myriad ways this one-time classic will be devalued anew. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the movie in theatres this week, I implore everyone seeing it to keep one thing in mind: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic Park<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, any more than your Colvin Klien shades from Colaba Causeway are close to the originals. I haven\u2019t seen the film yet, and when I do, I know I\u2019ll be watching it with a feeling similar to the one you get when you\u2019re scrolling through an ex\u2019s Instagram. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t the series I once loved, but I still want to see how it all turns out.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jurassic World is not Jurassic Park, any more than your Colvin Klien shades from Colaba Causeway are close to the originals.
