{"id":2644,"date":"2016-06-26T12:32:13","date_gmt":"2016-06-26T07:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=2644"},"modified":"2026-07-17T20:08:33","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T14:38:33","slug":"bhavesh-joshi-superhero-harshvardhan-kapoor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=2644","title":{"rendered":"Bhavesh Joshi Super Zero: The Vigilante Who Never Rises"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span><\/p><\/div><p>n Vikramaditya Motwane\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhavesh Joshi Superhero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/first-person\/college-campus-nostalgia-graduation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students Sikandar (Harshvardhan Kapoor) and Bhavesh Joshi (Priyanshu Painyuli) are among the horde of protesters detained in the aftermath of the 2011 anti-<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/vice\/evolution-of-bribe-india-corruption-paytm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corruption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movement. At the police station, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/sterlite-copper-protest-tuticorin-vedanta\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> protesters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sing motivational songs; their infectious energy wins the Mumbai police over in no time. Just when you settle in, bracing the film\u2019s sombre but activist-y tone, it suddenly changes course. The protesters begin to evoke the hoary \u201cMumbai spirit\u201d and start chanting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/sachin-tendulkar-rajya-sabha-speech-debut-mp-india-cricket\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSachinnn\u2026 Sachinn!\u201d<\/span><\/a>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hilarious. In a way, this scene is also symbolic of the film\u2019s proceedings. <\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhavesh Joshi Superhero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wants to be a lot of things. It\u2019s at once, a plea against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/delhi-india-lynching-junaid-not-in-my-name-protests-modi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">armchair activism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a social-justice warrior comedy, a vigilante justice drama, an angry revenge thriller, and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/superheroes-marvel-dc-comics-avengers-justice-league-iron-fist-jessica-jones-daredevil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">superhero <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">origin story. It essentially uses all the right words (atankwadi, anti-national, dushman ka agent) and touches upon pertinent topics (water crisis, fake encounters, widespread corruption, police apathy), but unfortunately has nothing new to offer. Come to think of it, even that would have been fine, if handled deftly, especially in the hands of a more accomplished actor. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a film where several characters randomly carry out surgical strikes on each other, Motwane causes the most harm by self-sabotaging and casting Kapoor in and as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhavesh Joshi Superhero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/mom-sridevi-nawazuddin-siddiqui-akshaye-khanna-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vigilante <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">friend\u2019s death guilts him into taking Bhavesh\u2019s place \u2013 with a shiny mask. Kapoor\u2019s limited talent is glaringly visible in every frame he occupies. He\u2019s unable to inhabit any persona other than that of a hero \u2013 he walks, talks, moves, cries, broods, and even drowns like a star and not an actor. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s precisely why his intensity comes off as comical, especially in a scene where he grieves his friend\u2019s death and yells at a martial arts teacher, causing the entire theatre to collectively chuckle. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a film about a rookie citizen going rogue, social awkwardness plays a significant role: You\u2019d expect him to be scared, but more importantly, you\u2019d expect him to be unsure of his actions. Kapoor unfortunately is too much in love with the idea of being a star to be able to evoke a vigilante. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1527848806.png\" alt=\"Bhavesh Joshi\" width=\"700\" height=\"280\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35085\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n\n<p><em>Bhavesh Joshi Superhero<\/em> should have taken its own catchphrase seriously: \u201cHeroes paida nahi hote.\u201d\n<\/p><p>Image Credit: Phantom Films<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No wonder then that he\u2019s mostly out of the picture in the film\u2019s first half, where Painyuli efficiently sets up the foundation for Bhavesh Joshi. Unfortunately, the film that proudly boasts traces of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dark Knight,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kick Ass<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chinatown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, shortchanges him by dragging the eventuality of his death (and by extension, Kapoor\u2019s transformation) for well over an hour. Naturally the film\u2019s bloated and indulgent runtime, at 153 minutes, fosters repetition and the novelty wears off sooner than you\u2019d expect.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the main reason why <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhavesh Joshi Superhero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feels so frustrating is because of what it could have been. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/mumbai-bombay-india-shivaji-maharaj-shiv-sena-thane-haji-ali-mughal-empire-tom-hanks-kala-ghoda\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">city that never sleeps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an apt backdrop (and antagonist) for an unsatisfied vigilante \u2013 who is considered a madman. To his credit, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/trapped-review-rajkummar-rao-vikramaditya-motwane-black-mirror-127-hours\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motwane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does milk every bit of Mumbai noir he can: right from an innovative bike chase on a local train platform (that also overstays its welcome) to a gorgeous fight sequence on a water pipeline. It\u2019s competent but not compelling.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also not like the film doesn\u2019t know what it should be angling toward; it does have stray clues here and there. Like when a friend tells Sikandar that he can\u2019t kill everyone just because they killed his friend. Or makes him realise the gravity of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/chester-bennington-suicide-linkin-park-grunge\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that\u2019s indirectly his doing. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhavesh Joshi Superhero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gets close, but never quite addresses the elephant in the room: the futility of vigilantism. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a system where corruption is so deeply and systemically entrenched, vigilantism \u2013 no matter how noble \u2013 stands no chance. It\u2019s as unchecked as the sins that are committed against innocent citizens every day. Moreover, vigilantism breaks rules the same way perpetrators do. Then how can it claim a moral high ground? And, more importantly, has it eroded the idea of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/aarushi\/the-poetry-of-justice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhavesh Joshi Superhero <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doesn\u2019t seem too interested in answering any of these questions and that is the film\u2019s biggest letdown. Instead, it indulges in weaving a naively optimistic superhero (Kapoor\u2019s bike has superpowers and he is almost immortal) tale that\u2019s as unrealistic as it is at odds with the theme. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, the third act of the film is essentially a lesson in misdirection, desperate in its need to be Malad\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rang De Basanti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and surprised at its own ability to become Dahanu\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/shape-of-water-monster-romance\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shape Of Water<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Except, neither did Bhavesh Joshi need to be a superhero nor did the film require any heroism.
