Named for the American cartoonist Alison Bechdel, the 1985 test prescribes that at least two women \u2013 on screen, in a novel, any work of fiction \u2013 ought to talk to each other about something other than a man. This year, in the wake of #<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/jeetendra-sexual-assault-me-too-bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MeToo <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a rally for gender-equality in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/oscras-2018-frances-mcdormand-timesup-harassment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/do-this-years-best-picture-oscar-nominees-pass-the-bechdel-test\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven of the nominated nine films<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shape of Water<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lady Bird<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, made the cut.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bechdeltest.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bechdel Test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> poses three questions: <\/span>\n\n1. Does the film have two or more (named) female characters? \n2. Do these characters talk to each other?\n3. If so, do they discuss something other than a man? \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, most of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, barring the odd <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/lipstick-under-my-burkha-movie-review-konkona-sen-censorship\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipstick Under My Burkha<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/tumhari-sulu-movie-review-vidya-balan-manav-kaul-indian-housewives\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tumhari Sulu<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/raazi-movie-review-alia-bhatt-meghna-gulzar\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raazi<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, would gloriously flunk the test. But that\u2019s not what we\u2019d expected of Shashanka Ghosh\u2019s widely anticipated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/veere-di-wedding-chick-flick-women\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veere Di Wedding<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, starring Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker, and Shikha Talsania. Not only is it one of the few times Bollywood has put together four talented actresses in the lead, but the film is also produced by two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/women-gender-discrimination-men-eat-first\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and co-written by one. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be fair, the film does honour the first two requirements rather ably, which would be an incredible feat, if it didn\u2019t embarrassingly stumble while trying to fulfill the third condition, of whether the women in the film talk to each other about something other than a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/india-good-boys-parents-girls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">man<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The answer is, hardly at all.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the very first frame \u2013 the four besties celebrated the end of board exams at Kalindi\u2019s (Kareena Kapoor) Pinterest-inspired castle (calling it a house would be a disservice) \u2013 it is evident that we\u2019re in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/mumbaiyya-hindi-north-india-delhi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the universe <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aisha<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> left behind. At 17, their discussions range from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/welcome-to-the-wetlands\/sex-condoms-men-stds-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">condoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marriage, boyfriends, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/new-parents-sex-life-parenthood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to some more boys. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1527834366.jpg\" alt=\"Veere Di Wedding\" width=\"724\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35073\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p> <em>Veere Di Wedding&#8217;s<\/em> portrayal of the Urban Indian Woman, and her concerns, is about as realistic as Narnia<\/p> <p>Image Credit: Balaji Motion pictures<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a 10-year-leap, Sonam\u2019s Avni is introduced as a divorce lawyer (after playing a tabla player in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/padman-review-akshay-kumar-arunachalam-muruganantham-twinkle-khanna\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Padman<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the actress is now on a mission to tick off every profession on her childhood fantasy list) who wears all the fake eyelashes available at Sarojini Market. Shikha Talsania\u2019s Meera is a young mother married to John, an American, and Swara\u2019s Sakshi is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/house-hunting-divorcee-metropolis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">divorcee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whose first exchange is with a group of nosy neighbourhood aunties inquiring about her estranged husband, Vineet. The protagonists only talk crores, Manish Malhotra, Sephora, and Kalyan Jewellers.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avni\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/when-mothers-visit-living-alone-bombay-parents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mother<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Neena Gupta) doesn\u2019t survive on oxygen, but on a drug called Bharat Matrimony, so none of their interactions go beyond why the daughter doesn\u2019t want to marry a random guy. Kalindi\u2019s future mother-in-law, on the other hand, can\u2019t stop raving about her precious son. The veeres Skype to discuss nothing but Kalindi\u2019s fiance Rishabh (Sumeet Vyas); while Sakshi chides Avni for \u201cwanting to have sex with someone called Nirmal\u201d and mocks her for sleeping with her married boss. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll never guess what they are talking about. Yep, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/real-men-crying-emotional-sensitive-men-vulnerable\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An hour into the film, they have golgappas and talk about the men on matrimonial apps, give <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/fitoor-mishra\/raja-hindustani-aamir-khan-karishma-kapoor-kissing-21years-anniversary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kissing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tips that Avni should utilise on Nirmal, and flock to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/office-toilet-decorum-washroom-anxiety-ocd-toilet-humour\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bathroom <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to bitch about said man. They try locating a missing Kalindi but first ask Avni about the man she hooked up with the previous night. They have a huge fight and angrily throw each other\u2019s bad decisions in the other\u2019s face. I waited with bated breath, for maybe the bad decisions didn\u2019t involve a man. Seconds later, I was proven wrong. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They suddenly go on a patch-up<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/outdoors\/road-trip-losing-friends-zindagi-na-milegi-dobara\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trip<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Phuket to discuss Rishabh, Vineet, and John. They watch the sunset but also try calling Rishabh. They go drinking but hear Kalindi drunk-crying about how much she loves Rishabh. They go for breakfast and discuss Sakshi being blackmailed by Vineet, (although, Swara is a hoot in the scene with the dildo). I could tell you more, but you already know the rest. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s as if <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veere Di Wedding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refuses to have any emotional depth only because it fears that its protagonists might have to talk about something other than men. It seems to think having four women in a frame is more than enough; so naturally the film\u2019s plot is dismissed even more offhandedly than their conflicts or talk about money. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funnily enough, the one scene where two female characters in the film are not talking about men, they\u2019re talking about a brand placement: \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/air-india-best-buses-fdi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air India<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is always on time\u201d. There\u2019s also that other brief scene, where the four friends find the wedding lehenga of Kalindi\u2019s dead mother and hug. At least, clothes can make them forget the existence of men. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, even though it\u2019s 2018, it\u2019s still super refreshing to see female characters who drink, smoke, cuss, and hookup with abandon. But the film\u2019s portrayal of the Urban Indian Woman, and her concerns, is about as realistic as Narnia.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent interview, Swara Bhasker pointed out how it\u2019s taken mainstream Bollywood almost 105 years to make a film about four female friends having fun. Might have been too much to wish that the film also pass the Bechdel Test.
