I<\/span><\/p>f there is one thing that <\/span>Bollywood<\/span><\/a> loves as much as <\/span>Karan Johar<\/span><\/a> loves pouting and dancing at starry weddings, it\u2019s back-patting its own. Rajkumar Hirani\u2019s upcoming <\/span>Sanju<\/span><\/i>, touted as the movie event of the year, is a prime example. <\/span>\n\nThe <\/span>Sanjay Dutt<\/span><\/a> biopic is directed and produced by the same people who resuscitated the actor\u2019s failing career with <\/span>Munnabhai MBBS<\/span><\/i><\/a>. The actor essaying Dutt is none other than <\/span>Ranbir Kapoor<\/span><\/a>, a third-generation star from Bollywood\u2019s <\/span>first family <\/span><\/a>(whose career is going through a rough patch of its own). The fact that the casting coup also translates to Raj Kapoor\u2019s grandson essaying the role of Nargis\u2019 son makes matters all the more poetic. Plus, its supporting cast boasts of every actor you can think of \u2013 Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, <\/span>Anushka Sharma<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Sonam Kapoor<\/span><\/a>, Dia Mirza, <\/span>Vicky Kaushal<\/span><\/a>, Jim Sarbh, Boman Irani, and even <\/span>Alia Bhatt<\/span><\/a>. At this point, it\u2019s less movie and more, Bollywood party. Even Sonam Kapoor\u2019s <\/span>star-studded wedding<\/span><\/a> failed to get so many talented actors under one roof.<\/span>\n\nNaturally, with a bevy of known faces playing a host of known faces and a starry poster releasing every day, the excitement is understandable. The film\u2019s popularity is evident from how swiftly <\/span>its teaser<\/span><\/a> became the trending topic the moment it released last month. Today, social media is abuzz with talks of the trailer.<\/span>\n\nFrom social media influencers to <\/span>Rishi Kapoor<\/span><\/a>, everyone\u2019s reaction can be summed up in one line: \u201cExact Sanjay Dutt lag raha hai woh!\u201d Which is a bit like saying you were excited about <\/span>Koi\u2026 Mil Gaya<\/span><\/i> because of Jadoo\u2019s striking resemblance to a gareebon kaa alien: It\u2019s completely irrelevant. (That\u2019s not to take away from the fact that Ranbir Kapoor\u2019s mastery over Dutt\u2019s body language is astounding.)<\/span>\n\nBut this intense interest around <\/span>Sanju<\/span><\/i> also begs a fascinating question: Is the film going to ride on Dutt\u2019s cult reputation or Kapoor\u2019s acting prowess?<\/span>\n\nSanju <\/span><\/i>benefits abundantly from the fact that its protagonist has led an enthralling life. In a world full of Alan Harpers, Sanjay Dutt is a Charlie Harper. No, Charlie Sheen actually. If <\/span>drug abuse,<\/span><\/a> ill-fated love affairs, <\/span>multiple marriages<\/span><\/a>, conviction, imprisonment, paroles, and family feuds don\u2019t make a pot boil, nothing does. It\u2019s the same reason why a biopic on <\/span>Akshay Kumar<\/span><\/a>, may never evoke such widespread engrossment, despite his outsider-to-Khiladi No 1 story and status as Bollywood\u2019s Patriot-in-Chief. <\/span>\n\"\"\n

Even though Dutt\u2019s Second Coming in Bollywood (<\/span>Agneepath, Zanjeer, Bhoomi<\/span><\/i>) has failed to create a splash for his film career, by no means is he a bygone celebrity. The new Dutt is more sober, more reclusive, but yet Bollywood\u2019s first bad boy has a fan following to match the superstars of today. <\/span>\n

For Ranbir Kapoor, Dutt\u2019s colourful life has guaranteed that the battle is already half-won.<\/blockquote>\nDoes that guarantee <\/span>Sanju<\/span><\/i> will be an entertaining movie? Perhaps not. People who admire Dutt\u2019s rough edges and extra Y chromosome might find Ranbir Kapoor to be a mild mojito in comparison. Dutt might be the inferior actor, but his personality and devil-may-care attitude have rendered him unforgettable. Which makes Kapoor\u2019s gamble an even bigger risk. His last couple of outings \u2013 <\/span>Bombay Velvet, <\/span><\/i>Tamasha<\/span><\/i><\/a>, <\/span><\/i>Jagga Jasoos<\/span><\/i><\/a> \u2013 have failed to become commercial successes despite his assured versatility. <\/span>\n\nKapoor could, at best, emerge as an actor who finally delivers \u2013 at worst, he\u2019ll be dull. But he won\u2019t be the hero.<\/span>\n\nThe real hero will be its director <\/span>Rajkumar Hirani<\/span><\/a>. His past 100-crore records aside, Hirani has, by now, perfected mainstream masala filmmaking and does not undermine his audience. Personally, I didn\u2019t like Sanju\u2019s teaser as much: It defied a biopic\u2019s expectations of being \u201cserious\u201d and instead went the animated route. (The trailer sort of rectifies that, if you can ignore the romanticisation of drug addiction and the glorification of Dutt\u2019s past tainted by womanising.) <\/span>\n\nBut then again, that might just be its calling card. The Hiranification of biopics is a fascinating premise and with a subject as contentious as Sanjay Dutt,<\/span> Sanju<\/span><\/i> could be the Bollywood experiment that actually pays off.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
