Today is also the worldwide release of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solo: A Star Wars Story<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marking the tenth time audiences have been transported into George Lucas\u2019 fantastical space opera since the original first clapped a stranglehold on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/culture\/last-jedi-2017-donald-trump-narendra-modi-yogi-adityanath-sexism-millenials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zeitgeist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ever since the revival of the series in 2015, each instalment has been met with breathless anticipation from millions of fans across the globe, but this outing was to be special. After all, it was the first to feature a character from the original films as a protagonist, and the character was the cult favourite Han Solo.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/disarre\/may-the-4th-yoda-star-wars-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 Even if you haven\u2019t seen the films, you probably know who I\u2019m talking about. Such was the impact of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on public consciousness that these characters have attained a mythical, almost godlike status in pop culture. In Western canon, these films have attained the status of modern epics, and are treated with an accorded degree of reverence.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know a thing or two about getting offended when someone tampers with our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/millennials-bhagavad-gita-met-medical-college-ahmedabad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">epics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here in India, which is why it shouldn\u2019t be too difficult to understand why <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flatters to deceive. It takes a legendary hero, and then presents him to us before he becomes either a legend or heroic. The charm of Han Solo lay in Harrison Ford\u2019s effortless portrayal of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/hugh-laurie-house-md-sherlock-terminator-clint-eastwood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charming but roguish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> smuggler; that\u2019s with whom the audience fell in love. Replacing him with a cookie-cutter protagonist \u2013 one who relies on tired tropes like a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/harry-potter-jk-rowling-fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them-eddie-redmayne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry Potter<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-esque humble origin, and the strained relationship he shares with his mentor, reminiscent of Batman and Ra\u2019s Al Ghul in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman Begins <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 is like giving up a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/india-well-done-meat-cooking-mistakes-medium-rare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perfectly cooked rare Kobe steak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a McChicken burger.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exactly like cinematic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/office-snack-diet-healthy-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fast food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there\u2019s no intellectual nourishment to be had here. There\u2019s requisite amount of jaw-dropping CGI that makes the space battles and futuristic action sequences come to life. The makers went hammer and tongs on providing fan service, with enough in-jokes and Easter eggs to keep the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faithful nudging and winking at each other throughout the two-hour-plus runtime. But at the centre of it all is a disappointing, yawning, Harrison Ford-shaped void that is impossible for his successor Alden Ehrenreich to fill.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Ehrenreich\u2019s Solo is bound by the narrative constraints of having to check off items from his character\u2019s Wikipedia page<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some roles that become synonymous with the actors bringing them to life. There can never be another Gabbar Singh after Amjad Khan. If there was no Clint Eastwood, there would be no Dirty Harry. Jared Leto, a proven thespian in his own right, tried reviving The Joker after Heath Ledger made the character his own in an Academy Award-winning performance, and we all saw how that turned out. Sometimes, an actor and a role are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/soulmates-relationships-beliefs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soulmates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meant to be with each other and nobody else. It\u2019s the same with Harrison and Han. Any outsider trying to pick up the mantle was as doomed as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/love-rebound-relationship-dating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rebound fling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after a long, happy relationship.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the unenviable task of bringing young Han Solo to life falls to Alden Ehrenreich. There\u2019s an uncanny likeness between him and a young Harrison Ford when you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/the-3d-movies-torture-oculus-rift-virtual-reality-imax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take off the 3D glasses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and squint just so, but that\u2019s where all the resemblances stop. Where Ford played Solo with a devil-may-care nonchalance that made me wonder if he actually cared about anything other than his own profits, Ehrenreich comes across as a goody-two-shoes trying to hide his earnestness with a few (woodenly delivered) flippant one-liners.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t help that the surrounding ensemble of actors, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">True Detective<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Woody Harrelson and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/game-of-thrones-khaleesi-daenerys-targaryen-emilia-clarke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 Emilia Clarke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are allowed a greater emotional range throughout their character arcs. In contrast, Ehrenreich\u2019s Solo is bound by the narrative constraints of having to check off items from his character\u2019s Wikipedia page, like his first meeting with Chewbacca, acquiring the Millennium Falcon, and, as any Jedi worth their lightsaber should know, completing the notorious Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs. This one-and-done approach to what should have been significant plot events turns <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into a half-hearted re-enactment of beats that have already been covered extensively in the previous films.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The burden of fan expectations is necessary evil for any franchise as long-lived as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The franchise\u2019s acquisition by Disney was a good news-bad news situation, as it assured fans <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/star-wars-last-jedi-force-awakens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regular new instalments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but also came with the danger of undermining the preceding films. Despite Han Solo being one of the most enduring and popular characters from the series, this origin story falls into the latter category. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s an old saying about how you can\u2019t catch lightning in a bottle. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solo: A Star Wars Story <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has created the perfect bottle, but without Harrison Ford playing Han Solo as only he can, there\u2019s no lightning to be seen.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It isn\u2019t too difficult to understand why Solo: A Star Wars Story flatters to deceive.
