{"id":2574,"date":"2016-06-01T20:46:10","date_gmt":"2016-06-01T15:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=2574"},"modified":"2026-07-17T20:06:52","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T14:36:52","slug":"deadpool-2-review-ryan-reynolds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=2574","title":{"rendered":"Deadpool 2: A Film So Meta It is Its Own Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">S<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ometime last year, an executive at Fox was probably stealing ideas from an intern when he came up with a brilliant one all by himself \u2013 \u201cWhat if, instead of getting people to review our movies through boring articles and rotten tomatoes, we review them through full-length features?\u201d It was this epiphany that presumably prompted the scripting of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/ranveer-singh-deadpool-2-hindi-dubbed-movies\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool 2<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a movie so self-referential, so self-aware, and so full of snark, it\u2019s basically reviewing itself, and all the millions of superhero movies that preceded it.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sequel to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2016\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continues with the \u201cmeta\u201d delivery template set by the previous film. It is a brilliant tool because it can make you laugh at Hollywood\u2019s general decade-long obsession with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/superheroes-marvel-dc-comics-avengers-justice-league-iron-fist-jessica-jones-daredevil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> superhero movies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while you sit through, yet another superhero movie. Even if you are the kind of person who despises watching comic-book characters brought to life on the big screen, you\u2019ll find it hard to criticise the movie for anything Deadpool doesn\u2019t criticise himself. No commentator is going to accuse the film of lazy writing (and it isn\u2019t), because in one scene Ryan Reynolds \u2013 who co-wrote the movie \u2013 calls it that himself. It\u2019s the best aversion tactic since Patanjali started making <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/condom-commercial-ban-gujrat-model\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">condoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is like that large kid from school, who was constantly bullied for his size, until he started laughing along and ended up getting a loveable nickname like \u201cBada Bhai\u201d. Before you can groan about an upcoming CGI fight sequence, Ryan Reynolds has already told you how lame it\u2019s going to be. Comic-book fans don\u2019t have to look extra hard for loopholes; Deadpool will look into the camera and tell you what they are, quite unapologetically.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an hour and a half, Deadpool manages to make fun of several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/avengers-infinity-war-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marvel superheroes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the entire DC Universe, the people who make all these movies, and the viewers. He calls Hawkeye a useless guy with a bow and arrow, he jokes about how the production house always gives him the worst X-Men to star in his movie. He doesn\u2019t even spare the artist who drew the original Deadpool cartoon, calling him the \u201cguy who can\u2019t draw feet\u201d.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Deadpool 2 is like that large kid from school, who was constantly bullied for his size, until he started laughing along and ended up getting a loveable nickname like \u201cBada Bhai\u201d.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one scene, Ryan Reynolds asks Cable \u2013 the \u201cold fuck with Winter Soldier arm\u201d \u2013 if he\u2019s actually from the DC Universe because Cable has just stabbed him in the neck. In another, he calls him <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/fitoor-mishra\/avengers-infinity-war-thanos-fitoor-mishra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since Josh Brolin plays both the roles. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film is not without its share of socio-political commentary. And in yet another sequence, he references the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/doodle\/me-too-women-safety-india-sexual-harassment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#MeToo moment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when he says, \u201cSo many old white men in this room, I forgot to carry my rape whistle.\u201d Deadpool is tasked with taking care of a teenage mutant New Zealander, who indicates that he\u2019s too fat to be a superhero. Toward the end, he hilariously calls the X-Men, X-People, a much more \u201cpolitically correct\u201d term. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-34392\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1526707561.jpg\" width=\"746\" height=\"407\" \/>\n\nBefore you can groan about an upcoming CGI fight sequence, Ryan Reynolds has already told you how lame it\u2019s going to be.\n\nImage Credits: Marvel entertainment\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last movie set in the Marvel Universe was the Shakespearean tragedy known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Infinity War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The movie had the same plot as Dan Brown\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inferno<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but was through the story of a large man with a glove covered in gems. How literary, the executives must have thought, let\u2019s make sure it\u2019s two hours too long, and way too dramatic, we\u2019re sure kids will love this. Then once the movie was over, and everyone had died, people suddenly remembered that Marvel could just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/44904-avengers-4-spoilers-involve-time-travel-fan-theories\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time travel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its way out of any predicament and began feeling a little shortchanged. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to pinpoint when exactly superhero movies went from being fun movies that children could enjoy, to intense spectacles that cost millions of dollars to produce, but over the last two years the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/avengers-infinity-war-marvel-fandom\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obsession<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has peaked. Every time a new trailer comes out, the internet goes wild dissecting it in the quest for the elusive Easter egg. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Infinity War <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set a record for most trailer views in a single day (200 million in 24 hours), and sparked hours of discussion over whether random fans on the internet thought they had caught a glimpse of their favourite superhero. The favourite superhero will no doubt be a character with an unremarkable name who made a guest appearance in two of the 6,000 issues of the comic series, but will be argued about for days on end, until all opinions on the true origin story have been put forth. I love superhero movies as much as the next person, but even I have to admit that it\u2019s a little ridiculous to put in that much effort, when you\u2019re talking about a movie about some people in spandex. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Oscar-winning Alejandro <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u00f1\u00e1rritu says, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI sometimes enjoy them because they are basic and simple and go well with popcorn. The problem is that sometimes they purport to be profound, based on some Greek mythological kind of thing.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acts as a reminder of how absurd this obsession with comic book superheroes is.
