I<\/span>rrespective of whether you follow superhero movies, the latest <\/p>Avengers <\/span><\/i>is the new CrossFit. You might as well be an unkempt hermit who lives under a rock if you haven\u2019t marked yourself \u201csafe from fomo\u201d on Facebook by \u201cWatching <\/span>Avengers: Infinity War<\/span><\/i><\/a> M<\/span><\/i>ovie at Overpriced Multiplex Serving Overpriced Samosas with Friend and 5 Others\u201d. Following suit later this week is<\/span> Deadpool 2<\/span><\/i>, which has Bollywood\u2019s idiot savant, and might be the poster child for <\/span>candy-flipping<\/span><\/a> party drugs, <\/span>Ranveer Singh<\/span><\/a>, voicing the title character. A daunting task considering he\u2019s dubbing for Ryan Reynolds, who is Deadpool IRL, without all the killing or badass red suit. But who better to play a swaggering, hard-drinking hedonist bro, the archetype of the grown-up adolescent, other than Bollywood\u2019s <\/span>Mr Brightside<\/span><\/a>, right? <\/span>\n\nIt\u2019s difficult to take offence with someone who goes out of his way to be so likeable (unless of course, you\u2019re the <\/span>Karni Sena<\/span><\/a>) and this is definitely a step in the right direction. Matching the on-screen character with the offscreen voice, ensuring the subtle vocal nuances that define the character aren\u2019t lost in translation, is an often overlooked facet of the Hollywood-se-Bollywood endeavour. It is also key to getting the movie right.<\/span>\n

Sometimes it\u2019s like someone played \u201cname-place-animal-thing\u201d and added \u201cmaut\u201d as an affix. What else explains Legion becoming Maut Ke Farishte, and Jaws transmuting into Maut Ka Samundar.<\/blockquote>\nA few years ago, when a movie trailer announced something along the lines of \u201c<\/span>James Bond<\/span><\/a> ki dil dehlane wali kahani, <\/span>Casino Royale<\/span><\/i>, ab Hindi mein,\u201d I was intrigued enough by the Hindi words coming out of Daniel Craig\u2019s mouth to buy tickets to watch the film. At the part where I\u2019d expect the secret agent to order <\/span>three measures of Gordon\u2019s \u2013 one of vodka; half a measure of Kina Lillet; shaken over ice, with a thin slice of lemon peel \u2013 with the same stiff-upper-lipped \u00e9lan and panty-dropping panache in your very own matrubhasha, I got a voice over that sounded<\/span>\u00a0like a <\/span>Punjabi uncle<\/span><\/a> ordering a \u201cPatiala Chivas, aadha paani, aadha Coke, aur chaar cube barrf ke saath\u201d at a desi shaadi.<\/span>\n\nHow many times have you flipped through TV channels and found a rerun of <\/span>Blade <\/span><\/i>or <\/span>The Mummy Returns<\/span><\/i> where the characters sound like regional caricatures of themselves? Brendan Fraser saying \u201c<\/span>Mummy <\/span><\/a>humare peeche hai\u201d sounds less like the warning it is, and more like a reassurance that his mum\u2019s got his back. And who is not scarred by <\/span>Jurassic Park\u2019s <\/span><\/i>\u201cBhago, bhago badi chipkali aa rahi hai?\u201d <\/span>\n\nThis loss in translation begins with the title. The original title is usually swapped with a mindless <\/span>Google<\/span><\/a> translation, leading to LOL-worthy names such as <\/span>Harry Potter<\/span><\/i><\/a> aur Aag Ka Pyaala <\/span><\/i>for Goblet of Fire, or <\/span>Vanar Raj<\/span><\/i>, for<\/span> Planet of the Apes<\/span><\/i><\/a>. Occasionally the studios, in an effort to build suspense, go for something mindless. <\/span>The Matrix <\/span><\/i>is re-christened <\/span>Maayajaal<\/span><\/i>: less Keanu Reeves dodging bullets, and more semi-pornigraphic masala movie about a femme fatale who seduces men, murders them, and turns their bodies into wax statues. <\/span>\n\nIn the enthusiasm to rename a movie, translations seem to get carried away, explaining the title in too many words like it\u2019s a tweet. Arnold Schwarzenegger\u2019s <\/span>Eraser<\/span><\/i>, which is about a federal agent who specialises in erasing people\u2019s old identity either by assigning them new ones or killing them, turned into the overtly succinct <\/span>Mita Doonga Naam-o-Nishaan<\/span><\/i>. Hmm, I can only picture Dharam Paaji in the lead. Or when the <\/span>disaster<\/span><\/a> porn movie <\/span>2012 <\/span><\/i>became <\/span>Pralay Ki Shuruaat<\/span><\/i>. Sometimes it\u2019s like someone played \u201cname-place-animal-thing\u201d and added \u201cmaut\u201d as an affix. What else explains <\/span>Legion<\/span><\/i> becoming<\/span> Maut Ke Farishte<\/span><\/i>, and<\/span> Jaws<\/span><\/i> transmuting into <\/span>Maut Ka Samundar<\/span><\/i>. Here\u2019s a more exhaustive <\/span>list<\/span><\/a> on Quora. <\/span>\n\nIt doesn\u2019t help that often the dialogue is a convenient translation of the script, which fails to capture punchlines, colloquialisms, or any of the nuances of the original and the subs mirror the same. So naturally, \u201cThere was a <\/span>dildo<\/span><\/a> in the bag, it was vibrating…\u201d from <\/span>Fight Club <\/span><\/i>became, \u201cWoh ek khatarnak cheez thi aur woh hil rahi thi.\u201d I don\u2019t know how khatarnak a dildo can be, but I\u2019m pretty sure, if a dildo attacked me, I could pull out its batteries real quick. Human \u2013 1, Dildo \u2013 0. <\/span>\n\nMy brush with the Hindi <\/span>Casino Royale<\/span><\/i> ruined dubbed movies for me. That is, until the recent <\/span>Jungle Book<\/span><\/i><\/a>, where Nana Patekar stepped in for Idris Elba\u2019s Shere Khan, piqued my curiosity once again. It didn\u2019t disappoint. Just like Deadpool \u201cis\u201d Ryan Reynolds and Robert Downey Jr \u201cis\u201d <\/span>Iron Man<\/span><\/a>, Nana Patekar \u201cis\u201d the <\/span>original Shere Khan<\/span><\/a>. The very timbre of an actor\u2019s voice can work magic for redubs, as I saw with Nana\u2019s voicing of the vicious king of the jungle (ditto for Irrfan Khan as Baloo, and Piggy Chops for Kaa). Had Shere Khan said, \u201cAa gaya meri maut ka tamasha dekhne\u201d before falling into the burning brush, audiences across theaters in India would have achieved a collective cinematic climax.<\/span>\n\nWith Ranveer Singh in the Hindi dub of <\/span>Deadpool 2<\/span><\/i>, we\u2019re a step closer to getting it right. That way we can finally watch the latest Hollywood release with our overpriced snacks and watered-down Cokes without having to wonder why a dildo is such a \u201ckhatarnaak cheez\u201d.<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
