In a subplot that mirrors real life, its eponymous lead Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) confronts Max Tatum, the sleazy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/oscras-2018-frances-mcdormand-timesup-harassment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> director who<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/sexual-harassment-women-safety-eve-teasing-india-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sexually exploited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Trish Walker, her adopted sister\/best friend at the beginning of her acting career in exchange for roles. Trish was a minor then. The scene comes moments after Trish is forced to confront her own past that explores how trauma sparks unbridled rage in women. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enraged at Max, Jessica pushes him around, pinning him to the hood of his car. Cowering in fear he asks her, \u201cWhat the hell are you?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m angry,\u201d she replies, relaxed as the calm before the storm, before picking him up and punching a hole in the car. This moment crowns Jessica as the reel-life female superhero of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Wd6LdRATJuv8WKrFtx5dz36fY6VRS9cXKvpnjhAhNZg\/edit#MeToo%20movement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#MeToo movement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as the context and her words echo what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/harvey-weinstein-me-too-sexual-assault-rape-women-safety-office-environment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around the world have been feeling since last year (although the show was written months before the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/harvey-weinstein-movie-producer-sexual-harassment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvey Weinstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expos\u00e9). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Jones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we\u2019re fucking angry, and not just for ourselves but for each other too. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We first met the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/ho-ja-regender\/the-foul-mouthed-feminist-arre-ho-ja-regender\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foul-mouthed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jessica struggling with an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/consent-alcohol-sex-hookups-relationships-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problem and wearing a uniform of rugged jeans and combat boots almost two years ago. If the first season dwelled on Jessica\u2019s victimhood, introducing us to Kilgrave the mind-controlling villain responsible for her trauma, then season two goes deeper into what follows the trauma \u2013 an all-consuming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/three-billboards-frances-mcdormand-me-too-female-rage-oscars\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite her superpowers in the first season, Jessica was susceptible to Kilgrave\u2019s mind-control virus, which enabled him to turn her into his kept puppet, abusing and assaulting her at will for months. Kilgrave was a sadistic narcissist whose penchant for making people do his bidding made him the personification of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/bro-code-toxic-masculinity-woke-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic masculinity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1522229851.jpg\" alt=\"Jessica Jones\" width=\"611\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32770\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>When Max asks Jessica Jones, &#8220;What the hell are you?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m angry,\u201d she replies, relaxed as the calm before the storm.<\/p>\n<p>Image credit: Netflix<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Jessica took Kilgrave down at the end of the first season, the damage had already been done. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the second season that premiered at the beginning of March, he reappears for an episode as a delusion who lives on in Jessica\u2019s brain. It\u2019s an apt portrayal of the fact that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/aziz-ansari-consent-sexual-assault-me-too\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trauma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t simply subside once the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/kevin-spacey-male-sexual-abuse-survivors-child-abuse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stops and the abuser is gone from the picture. It\u2019s emblematic of the life-long anger and fear that women have to bear the burden of throughout their lives. In the wake of #MeToo, this plotline strikes close to the everyday experiences of women \u2014 more than the generic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/superheroes-marvel-dc-comics-avengers-justice-league-iron-fist-jessica-jones-daredevil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">superheroes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with an equally generic appetite for being the world\u2019s saviour. This makes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Jones <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that rare <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/gay-dumbledore-fantastic-beasts-lgbt-superheroes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">superhero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offering that allows space for women to be angry, scared, traumatised, strong, and weak at the same time.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The boiling rage that Jessica experiences is messy and uncontrollable, spilling over into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/gurgaon-movie-film-review-shanker-raman-ragini-khanna\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After beating up a rival private investigator, she is ordered by the court to attend anger-management classes. In a darkly humorous scene, one by one, the people in the class narrate their stories of uncontainable rage while bouncing a ball against the wall. When it\u2019s Jessica\u2019s turn, she narrates the show\u2019s plotline with increasing fury \u2013 \u201cMy whole family was killed in a car accident. Someone did horrific experiments on me. I was abducted, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/marital-rape-india-child-minor-consent-supreme-court-ipc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and forced to kill someone. And now some maniac says that I am here for a reason. Like some sick destiny. She\u2019s out killing people, and I\u2019m in here bouncing a goddamn ball!\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As she finishes, the ball breaks into pieces and the wall gives in, leaving her classmates gasping and terrified. It is obvious that anger management isn\u2019t going to fix Jones as the real perpetrators who violated her and turned her into a \u201csuper freak\u201d, are out living their lives. It\u2019s a stunning scene, contrary to the victimised portrayals of abused women that we conventionally see on TV. Instead of vilifying female rage, the show attempts to understand it, if not deem it as necessary.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica\u2019s anger is accompanied by the rage felt by the other women in the show. Trish\u2019s violence-laden anger is emboldened by her helplessness in the face of men like Max, causing her to hunt down the doctor who gave Jessica her powers and make him perform the same dangerous procedure on her. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1522229840.jpg\" alt=\"Jessica Jones\" width=\"611\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32771\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>Instead of vilifying female rage, Netflix&#8217;s <em>Jessica Jones<\/em> attempts to understand it, if not deem it as necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Image credit: Netflix<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<b>*Spoilers ahead*<\/b>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big reveal of the season, however, is that the monster murdering people who are connected to the experiments performed on Jessica is her own mother. It\u2019s then that we learn that Alisa, her mother was a brilliant mathematician who was subdued by her insecure husband. It\u2019s evident that Alisa has harboured anger at her husband for years. Her story goes close to the bone for every woman whose talent has been curbed by controlling partners. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like its characters, the representation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/feminism-female-sexism-misogyny\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">female <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anger in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Jones <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is chaotic and complex, very different from sanitised portrayals of righteous female anger. The lines between good and evil get blurry by the end. For the show\u2019s women are not just angry about the abuse they respectively faced \u2013 they\u2019re furious about a whole spectrum of systemic injustice that includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/beware-of-the-brocialist-harvey-weinstein-sexism-feminism-gender-femininity-masculinty-metoo-notallmen-bro-code-brocialism-sexual-harassment-harassment-molestation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In showcasing female anger and its different facets, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Jones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the few shows that realistically portrays this complex emotion, even as numerous shows and films continue harping on the dangerous effects of female fury. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Jones <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shows, violence may not be the answer. But anger, perhaps is. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the second season ends, Jessica\u2019s anger shifts and lights the way to hope and healing, in tune with new psychological <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/articles\/201403\/go-forth-in-anger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that tells us that anger can be a positive emotion. When used constructively, it can become a motivating force which fuels the drive and creativity required to set things right. In the finale, it is implied that anger has dragged Jessica out of the hellhole her life has been, paving the way for new experiences. Watching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Jones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an eloquent portrait of female rage will not just make you angry, but also make you glad of that anger.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there aren\u2019t any vigilante heroines like Jessica beating up abusive men to a pulp in real life, it wouldn\u2019t be far-fetched to say that collective female anger was a driving force behind #MeToo. And shows like<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jessica Jones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlight that it is high time that female anger is accepted as a natural response to injustice. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the most important upshot is that anger is never just an emotion for women; it\u2019s laced with radical potential to help bring about real change and healing. As feminist activist Mona Eltahawy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/think\/opinion\/what-world-would-look-if-we-taught-girls-rage-ncna843511\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cAngry women are free women.\u201d<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jessica Jones is an eloquent portrait of female rage that makes you glad for the anger.
