{"id":2311,"date":"2016-05-03T00:47:47","date_gmt":"2016-05-02T19:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/performance-appraisal-corporate-work-place\/"},"modified":"2016-05-03T00:47:47","modified_gmt":"2016-05-02T19:17:47","slug":"performance-appraisal-corporate-work-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=2311","title":{"rendered":"How to Survive Every Performance Appraisal Ever"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span><\/p><\/div><p> t\u2019s that time of the year.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sun has emerged from the shadows and gone are the pleasant mornings that give you hope. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/office-secret-santa-christmas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christmas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/new-year-eve-31st-party-friends-boss-leave-christmas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have long bid goodbye and the only break to look forward to is May 1, a tribute to a long, lost labour movement. You realise that even the financial year is ending soon, and even before you grasp the hopelessness of the situation, you are hauled over coals to your annual performance review, that inescapable cesspit of corporate life. It\u2019s like waiting for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/ssc-students-school-hierarchy-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">school results<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there\u2019s not a spot of cheer at the end of it: Only sadness and disappointment. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the next 12 months, your life in the corporate world will track the following cycle: Disappointment in March and April; grudging relish in June and July as the measly bonus and pay hike register on your balance sheet; overindulgence in material possessions in August, September, and October in the mistaken belief that you are richer by billions; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/outdoors\/solo-travel-single-make-my-trip-gokarna-goa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">holidays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in December; and apprehension in February.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performance review meetings are a little like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/mumbai-winter-november-weather-cold-delusional\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winter in Mumbai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: You wait for it all year round, and you hope it will be pleasant after all the misery. But it\u2019s over before you know it and there\u2019s no change in your life whatsoever.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Remember the first multinational that came to our shores, the East India Company, and how we did a fine job of kissing their ass?<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come end of March, I always find myself in a room with a few \u201cleaders\u201d. It is supposed to be \u201cmy\u201d performance review, but for some weird reason, they can\u2019t stop talking about themselves. This time I had the honour of having two very successful ones. Proficient ass-lickers both. This species is not new to this country; India has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/brown-sahib-brexited\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been blessed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with them historically. Remember the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/shashi-tharoor-farrago-tv-live-now-republic-tv-arnab-goswami\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first multinational<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that came to our shores, the East India Company, and how we did a fine job of kissing their ass?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it happens every year, their monologue of my failures was only intermittently broken by verbiage such as \u201cleadership\u201d, \u201cdevelopment\u201d, \u201cstrategic\u201d, \u201ccooperation\u201d, and \u201cvision\u201d. Leaders have the superpower of using a lot of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/lexicon-samuel-johnson-new-dictionary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complex words<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to form sentences that mean very little. To the uninitiated, \u201cstrategic\u201d and \u201ccooperation\u201d are lingo from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/ease-of-doing-business-india-rankings-modi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corporate Bible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What it means is that you are required to report your colleagues\u2019 indiscretions, serve the overlords with dollops of servility, and laugh at the boss\u2019 sexist jokes. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I did what I do in every performance review\u2026 nod wisely and smile well. It\u2019s like being a panelist on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/arnab-goswami-republic-tv-india-times-now-newshour-cnn-ibn-ndtv\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republic TV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019re constantly being shown hostile behaviour by a middle-aged man for no reason at all. So when one of them said, \u201cThe research was good, Mad Marx. But, you should have demonstrated more leadership,\u201d I didn\u2019t tell them I was the sole member of my team. I nodded and smiled. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour articles have great content, but they lack that zing,\u201d said the other. I ran a \u201czingy\u201d headline about recession silently through my head: \u201cCheers! All will burn and you will be fucking roasted.\u201d I didn\u2019t say it, natch. I just nodded and smiled instead. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a while now, I have had a clear rule for these performance reviews: Never disagree with the reviewers. You should too. I applied it the day I was fucked over for a promotion because I pointed out errors in the boss\u2019s piece on South Asian currencies. The Soviet Union and performance review meetings are two places that have no place for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/politics\/no-country-for-dissent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dissent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d also made it a rule to never stand up for my colleagues if the bosses didn\u2019t like them. I did that twice for two extremely talented individuals in my team. In the end, they prospered, but I didn\u2019t. So if you have to throw your colleagues under the bus to move ahead in life, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/marathon-fitness-refusing-exercising-boring-workingout-runners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nike says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, just do it. My last rule was don\u2019t ask stupid questions. If your boss says he reads Russian writers like Charles Dickens, just congratulate him.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After trying to grease the corporate pole for fourteen years I\u2019ve realised one absolutely important thing: At the end of the day that nobody wants to hear bad news (except lawyers). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trick is to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/depression-zooey-deschanel-cognitive-behavioural-therapy-art-of-living-happiness-maria-von-trapp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insanely positive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and you will come out with flying colors. If the world is going into another recession and the boss asks you where the markets are headed in six months, double the current value of the Sensex. Or tell him to download the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/narendra-modi-gujarat-elections-rahul-gandhi-kaam-ki-baat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narendra Modi app<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The country seems to be a magical fairyland through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/music\/narendra-modi-india-2016-2017-demonetisation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the prism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the app. End the discussion by flipping out your wallet at the coffee shop for that tasty muffin or a cheesy croissant he always wanted to have, but didn\u2019t want to pay for. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do these two things and you\u2019ll never have a bad performance review in your life. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After about 20 minutes of the monologue, mine ended with the declarations of my below-inflation salary hike, noises of a \u201cpromotion and a big hike next year\u201d, and a promise to \u201cdrink the fuck out in the evening.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t choose some place businessy,\u201d one of them said as I was leaving. He was the guy who\u2019d told me spruce up my English for the next piece. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I did not respond with a comment or a question.
