He had kept repeating to the British public that there were <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20100129-what-tony-blair-has-said-wmd-iraq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weapons of Mass Destruction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Iraq. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it turned out, there weren\u2019t. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fake news was further spread out by large sections of mainstream <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/opinion\/blogs\/jamie-stiehm\/2013\/03\/21\/how-the-media-cheered-the-rush-to-war-in-iraq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as they cheered for military action. Thousands of British troops lost their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Casualties_of_the_Iraq_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and many others wounded on account of the \u201cintervention\u201d. Iraq\u2019s education system \u2013 considered one of the best in the region at the time \u2013 was in tatters. Sanctions and blockades were introduced and instability was created in the entire region from which they struggle to recover even now. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WMDs, however, were never actually labelled \u201cfake news\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For decades, it was institutions in the form of governments and traditional media that had the monopoly over the circulation of news, information, rumour, gossip, and even fake news. There is a long history of Iraq-like interventions, where elections are swung and panic is spread around, with help from what were outright lies. Make no mistake, presenting lies and falsehoods as credible truth isn\u2019t a new <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/history-of-fake-news-2017-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenomenon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It has existed for over 350 years. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But suddenly there\u2019s huge fuss about it. And it\u2019s a big problem, because anyone with an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/memes-language-millennial-internet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">internet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> connection and Photoshop can manufacture news. The internet democratised the flow of information, but every silver lining has a cloud. The internet also democratised and paved the path for the cancerous propulsion of fake news. Even as the watchdogs of the internet act as fact-checkers and lie-busters, there are thousands of individuals and websites involved in creating and distributing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/whatsapp-message-fake-forwards-news-viral-parents-trend-media-social-media-facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fake WhatsApp forwards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and false news articles. \u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That fake news is a nuisance is to say the sky is blue and grass is green. It has become a slur to shut down debate, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/donald-trump-roast-one-year-president-usa-white-house-malania-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donald Trump<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going around town, branding anything he disagrees with as \u201cfake news\u201d. It has also become a convenient excuse, for a lot of his critics, to justify certain events they cannot explain or debate with rational argument. \u201cOh, the electorate was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influenced<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by fake news,\u201d they parrot, without understanding the definition of that argument. It\u2019s like the liberal American version of \u201csoldiers are fighting at the border!\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if there is one thing that is clear, it is that the elite institutions of government and traditional media outlets appear to have lost their monopoly over the masses in the domain of distributing information.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">It will require a whole lot more study and research; it will require a whole lot more debate in the public arena.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, it is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/facebook-algorithm-family-mark-zuckberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebooks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Googles of the world \u2013 along with governments across the world \u2013 who crave that monopoly over the flow of information. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/gafa-eu-doesnt-love-large-american-internet-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GAFA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is striving to become the class monitors of the internet. Whether it is through the power of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, or in the garb of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/facebooks-latest-fix-for-fake-news-ask-users-what-they-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letting users decide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they want to act as filters to decide what is true and what is fake. They want to be the gatekeepers of information on cyberspace. Post the Cambridge Analytica scandal, users started downloading their Facebook data and were shocked to find out that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/facebook-was-tracking-your-text-message-and-phone-call-data-now-what\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had been collecting call records and SMS data from Android devices for years. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That proposed solution to fake news is an even bigger problem than that of fake news. It\u2019s like ordering a lobotomy to treat a cold. It suggests that we can trust a few institutions with knowing what\u2019s best for everyone. And as we all know, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cbLm--0Iudo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knowledge is porridge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason we avoid concentration of power in any administrative structure \u2013 ideal world scenario, i.e., no relation to IRL \u2013 is because when power is restricted to one, two, or even a few entities, the moment they become corrupt, the entire system collapses. There is already enough evidence out there to suggest that the likes of Facebook or Google have no moral right or objective expertise to carry out the function of being the internet police. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have seen quite recently in the Cambridge Analytica expos\u00e9, how criminally negligent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/facebook-privacy-data-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been with sensitive data. They may now potentially face a federal investigation. Google was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_IP-17-1784_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fined<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u20ac2.42 billion by the EU for manipulating search engine results to favour its own shopping service. Do we honestly believe these companies are capable of making moral judgments, capable of deciding what is true and what is false for us? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The simple answer is, we don\u2019t know. We are in a fairly nascent stage of dealing with these arresting questions that have wider consequences on society \u2013 we\u2019re only at the start of our online lives. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will require a whole lot more study and research; it will require a whole lot more debate in the public arena. But we must tread carefully, because it is always easier to make a problem worse than it is. And my fear is, that we\u2019re on that path already.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always be worried when people tell you to give them all the power, so they can do good for the world. Blair did it in \u201999.
