Rani plays Naina Mathur, a newly appointed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/delhi-noida-teacher-student-relationship-affair-school-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teacher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Tourette Syndrome tasked with teaching \u2013 rather surviving \u2013 the \u201cnotorious\u201d bunch of 9F, a class of 14 slum kids enrolled at the elite St Notker\u2019s High School. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scene comes in the aftermath of her unruly students destroying the science fair project and being suspended from the school premises until the final exams. After conveying their predicament to the punished students, a defeated Naina runs to the farthest corner of the school, struck by a severe case of vocal tics that result in her making involuntary loud grunts that sound like hiccups. As she vigorously tries to quieten down, the helplessness of the situation grips her and she breaks drown, hitting the window railings in her anger. It is to the actress\u2019 credit that she easily infuses her breakdown with flashes of frustration and sadness solely through her expressions. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This poignant scene is evidence of the versatility and acting prowess that Rani \u2014 who returns to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/kapoor-and-sons-homosexuality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bollywood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after four years <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can still boast of. Unfortunately, this scene that exploits Rani\u2019s propensity to evoke emotions is also an exception in a film that\u2019s otherwise riddled with cliches and hoists a weak character on its lead. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Hichki ends up being a film that inspires at the cost of exploiting the reality of the poverty-stricken.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hichki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in a way, comes off as a reversal of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/fitoor-mishra\/raja-hindustani-aamir-khan-karishma-kapoor-kissing-21years-anniversary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aamir Khan\u2019s<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taare Zameen Par<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Naina is a headstrong but generic underdog whose template to defy all odds is as predictable as it gets; there\u2019s a well-meaning principal (a sleep-walking Shiv Subramaniam), a rebel <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/ssc-students-school-hierarchy-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an absent overbearing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/secret-sex-life-father-dad-parents-extramarital-affair\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">father<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Sachin Pilgaonkar), and an evil snooty teacher (Neeraj Kabi). Take the Tourette\u2019s out and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hichki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School of Rock<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meets <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Sir, with Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is indeed laudable for a mainstream film to normalise a neuropsychiatric disorder and goad introspection on a society that discriminates individuals with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/jagga-jasoos-review-ranbir-kapoor-katrina-kaif-anurag-basu-disney\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hichki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also does a massive disservice to Rani Mukherji. This is an actress who has given one of Hindi cinema\u2019s finest performances as Michelle McNally, a blind and deaf girl from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/sanjay-leela-bhansali-padmavati-deepika-shahid-karni-sena-ranveer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanjay Leela Bhansali\u2019s<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(no matter what your feelings about the film). Come to think of it, she\u2019s also one of the few heroines from the \u201990s who has successfully managed to adapt to the grammar of modern Bollywood. Look no further than her mercurial turn as a feisty police officer investigating human trafficking in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mardaani<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for proof. And, this is also an actress who elevates every frame that she inhabits in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hichki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a few notches higher with her empathy, charm, and luminous screen presence. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there\u2019s only so much heft she can afford a half-baked role. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a way, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hichki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suffers from the same condition that afflicts most films with a social message: a severe case of good intentions that justifies the lack of risks. In numerous interviews and promotions for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hichki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before its release, its makers and its lead have gone hoarse about the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/entertainment\/movies\/hichki-release-rani-mukerjis-recipe-for-rejuvenation\/article23309805.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">film\u2019s aim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to use Tourette Syndrome as a \u201cmetaphor for overcoming obstacles and discrimination in life.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1521813202.jpg\" alt=\"Hichki Movie Review\" width=\"585\" height=\"390\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32605\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p><em>Hichki<\/em>, in a way, comes off as a reversal of Aamir Khan\u2019s <em>Taare Zameen Par<\/em>: Naina is a headstrong but generic underdog whose template to defy all odds is as predictable as it gets.<\/p>\n<p>Image Credit: Yash Raj Films<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is then ironic that the film resorts to doing what it claims to fight: abject <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/northeast-discrimination-assam-india\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discrimination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Invoking the RTE Act (similar to last year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/hindi-medium-india-bollywood\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hindi Medium<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the film houses a neglected class of slum kids in a school that segregates students in classes based solely on the marks on their answer papers. It could have been an unusual device used to lay bare the duplicity of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/icse-schools-fail-to-help-you-grow-into-a-street-smart-citizen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> system that prioritises rote learning, limits honours such as \u201cprefectship\u201d to a select few, and looks down on financially impoverished students. But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hichki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stops short of capturing something very accurate about the dichotomy of elite Indian schools by painting the class of 14 students in broad stereotypical strokes that come off as offensive, if not classist. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, all of the slum kids are shown as disinterested in securing an education until Naina walks into their life; they either place bets, smoke, abuse, exhibit their angst through a rap (which obviously mentions Dharavi) or are behind every prank or fight in school. Not only are they not allowed to have any redeeming trait, but are also chosen to be the ones disciplined. The unruly bunch are made to look the part too: their uniforms are dishevelled and they\u2019re either annoyingly obedient or aggressively rebellious. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the school\u2019s arrogant teacher actually goes as far as referring to 9F as \u201cmunicipality garbage\u201d while the camera focuses its privileged gaze on giving us a tour (and a lesson) of the slum these students reside in. Even the bit about them being brought to the right path by a teacher with a neuropsychiatric disorder seems a little contrived. Are we to understand that only the disenfranchised need educating? The message that <em>Hichki<\/em> claims to ride on would have been no different had these students been a part of a class where they coexist with \u201cnormal students\u201d. And, yet the film chooses to alienate them.<\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hichki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ends up being a film that inspires at the cost of exploiting the reality of the poverty-stricken.
