{"id":2209,"date":"2016-03-14T20:51:37","date_gmt":"2016-03-14T15:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/get-out-everyday-indian-racism\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T19:56:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T14:26:56","slug":"get-out-everyday-indian-racism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=2209","title":{"rendered":"There\u2019s an Indian Flavour to Get Out\u2019s Everyday Racism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">T<\/span><\/p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he American suburbia that provides the backdrop for the Academy Award-winning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Out <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might not look like crowded Mumbai or Delhi, but its inhabitants certainly reminded me of us Indians. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a scene in the movie where the African-American lead character played by Daniel Kaluuya finds himself at a brunch attended predominantly by white people. Sticking out like a sore thumb, the hero Chris soon finds all sights trained on him. The Caucasian guests approach him one-by-one, some praise his photography, others praise his physique. He gets inspected and evaluated like a pig at market. It reminded me of the time I came under the scrutiny of my distant relatives, most of them trying to find out if I was a rishta fit for their daughters.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The casual racism and stereotyping that becomes an obstacle for Chris to overcome in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is part of everyday India. Chris doesn\u2019t face down KKK members carrying tiki torches; he doesn\u2019t have to struggle against Jim Crow laws. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Out <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doesn\u2019t portray the usual, ugly brand of racism that we\u2019re all conditioned to reject. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris is reluctant to visit his white girlfriend\u2019s family in the suburbs, worried he\u2019ll be rejected for being black. However, when he does encounter his girlfriend\u2019s family, he meets a dad who proudly declares he voted for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/barack-obama-donald-trump-usa-michelle-obama-veep-500-days-of-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obama<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a sports-obsessed younger brother convinced black people are all athletes, and a community of white people that seems to revere black celebrities like Tiger Woods. Of course, this being a horror movie, there are complications and it ends with Chris realising that he needs to \u201cget out\u201d. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32008\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1520335543.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"611\" height=\"407\" \/>\n<figcaption><p>The racism witnessed in Get Out is more insidious and harder to pin down, much like the everyday stereotyping we see in India.<\/p><p>\nUniversal Pictures<\/p><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The racism witnessed in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Out <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is more insidious and harder to pin down, much like the everyday stereotyping we see in India. In our case, it\u2019s aimed at communities. We still crack up and make Sardar jokes, our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/india-muslim-community-not-in-my-name-protests-lynching-quran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muslim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> co-worker gets harangued to bring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/post-eid-biryani-binge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biryani<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lunch, and we make assumptions about a 30-year-old unmarried woman. In fact, you\u2019d be hard-pressed to find a group in India that does not have some set stereotypes about it. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/independent-single-woman-house-hunting-alcoholic-mini-skirt-christian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are alcoholics, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/gujaratis-despise-non-vegetarians-and-support-vegetarian-food-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gujjus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are food terrorists, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/bengali-bhodrolok-nyaka-obhimaan-byomkesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bengalis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are oversensitive, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/gujarat-marwari-housewives-ahmedabad-secret-life-amdavad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marwaris<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are kanjoos, \u201cMadrasis\u201d are good at math and science, or so the word on the street is.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">What makes Get Out such a great horror film is that its core conflict is something we live with every day.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to decide how to feel about this, because it isn\u2019t strictly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/delhi-india-greater-noida-rascism-nigerian-students-manish-khari\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or at least its textbook definition. There is no tangible, measurable way of proving that these stereotypes cause discrimination, so we let them slide. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This benign form of racism is an over-enthusiastic acknowledgement of differences between communities. Differences that lead Hindu landlords to refuse to rent their properties to Muslim tenants or Jains who disallow meat-eaters from residing in the same complex. It\u2019s an unwillingness to accept the otherness of anybody not belonging to our group. As we see in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this othering is the first step on the road to dehumanisation and eventual exploitation.<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32009\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1520335553.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"656\" height=\"407\" \/>\n<figcaption><p>The sometimes creepy, sometimes friendly Armitage family that confuses and torments Chris in the film reminded me of countless acquaintances and relatives.<\/p><p>\nUniversal Pictures<\/p><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Out <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such a great horror film is that its core conflict is something we live with every day. Though it\u2019s set in the US, this phenomenon of seemingly benign othering is truly international, which is why it resonated so much with me watching in India. The sometimes creepy, sometimes friendly Armitage family that confuses and torments Chris in the film, reminded me of the countless acquaintances and relatives I\u2019ve heard spouting off some generalised \u201csab jaante hai\u201d crap about other communities and groups.
