The stage was set for Jennifer Lawrence and Jodie Foster to present the Best Actress honour, which was to be the second last award of the ceremony. (Last year\u2019s Best Actor winner Casey Affleck, who has been sued for sexual assault, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/in-contention\/jennifer-lawrence-jodie-foster-oscars-casey-affleck-best-actress-1202715914\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withdrew<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as presenter.)<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As expected, Frances McDormand, the beating heart of Martin McDonagh\u2019s vigilante comedy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/three-billboards-frances-mcdormand-me-too-female-rage-oscars\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> walked away with the top prize, winning over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/shape-of-water-monster-romance\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shape of Water\u2019s<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sally Hawkins and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/modern-family\/lady-bird-saoirse-ronan-greta-gerwig-mother-daughter\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lady Bird\u2019s<\/span><\/i> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laurie Metcalf. After the perfunctory thank-yous in her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/arianelange\/frances-mcdormand-gave-a-hell-of-an-oscars-speech?utm_term=.kgbGvP1O5#.gmb2yAMY0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, McDormand bent down, placed her gold statuette on the floor, and made a simple request: She asked the women nominees in the audience to stand up. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe filmmakers, the producers, the directors, the writers, the cinematographers, the composers, the songwriters, the designers,\u201d she pleaded. And once there were enough heads, McDormand continued her invocation by asking everyone to look around and understand that these women not just had stories to tell, but also projects they needed financed. She further invited producers, directors, and studios to invite women to their offices and give them a hearing, ending her speech by advocating \u201cinclusion rider\u201d, effectively adding two new words to our vocabulary. (An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2018\/mar\/05\/what-is-an-inclusion-rider-frances-mcdormand-oscars-2018\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inclusion rider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a clause that actors insert in their contracts that necessitates the cast and crew of a film \u201cto meet a certain level of diversity\u201d.)<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A powerful, rallying call for the need for more opportunities for women, McDormand\u2019s fiery speech and gesture also laid bare the lack of these very opportunities. In 2018. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/lady-bird-greta-gerwig-oscar-nominee-film\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greta Gerwig<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the only woman director to be nominated for the Oscars this year, and only the fifth in the Academy\u2019s 90 years of existence. This year, there were also no women nominees in the Original Score, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, or in the Adapted Screenplay categories. It\u2019s why the women artists \u2013 including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/satire\/golden-globes-meryl-streep-india-bsf-jawan-karan-johar-bollywood-swami-om\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meryl Streep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 standing, hugging, cheering, and getting teary-eyed during McDormand\u2019s speech was as much an act of solidarity as resistance.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before McDormand\u2019s declaration, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/la-la-land-review-ryan-gosling-emma-stone-oscars-damien-chazelle-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emma Stone <\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/people.com\/movies\/oscars-2018-emma-stone-calls-out-four-men-greta-gerwig-nominated-best-director\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Best Director nominees by pointing out the lack of diversity and calling out the Academy\u2019s most male-dominated category with a sneaky, \u201cThese four men and Greta Gerwig created their own masterpieces this year.\u201d Then there were the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/harvey-weinstein-movie-producer-sexual-harassment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weinstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accusers Ashley Judd, Salma Hayek, and Annabelle Sciorra taking the stage to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/awards\/weinstein-ashley-judd-salma-hayek-oscars-times-up-1202717551\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">present<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a #TimesUp special, promising \u201climitless possibilities of equality, diversity, inclusion, intersectionality\u201d. There was also Allison Janney\u2019s delightful acceptance that started off with, \u201cI did it all by myself\u201d; a claim that although intended to be hilarious is also painfully true. And, who can forget Taraji P Henson possibly shading Ryan Seacrest at the red carpet?<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What also made speaking out against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/sexual-harassment-women-safety-eve-teasing-india-mumbai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual harassment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the widening gender gap in the backdrop of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/jeetendra-sexual-assault-me-too-bollywood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#MeToo <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and #TimesUp all the more imperative, was the fact that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/women-oscar-winners-2018-gender-gap-frances-mcdormand\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only six women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took home Oscars, including the two women winners as compared to 33 male winners. It\u2019s the lowest number of female winners since the Oscars in 2012, coming upto a little over 15 per cent. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, yet this duty of speaking out was left solely to the women.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The men of the Oscars on the other hand, save a few exceptions, seemed to be in no mood to use their positions, voices, or the year\u2019s biggest stage to legitimise a unique moment heralded by their colleagues. Not one male Oscar winner so much as spelt out #MeToo or harassment. Hell, even Jimmy Kimmel, in his opening behaviour referred to Weinstein and ilk\u2019s abuse as mere \u201cbad behaviour\u201d. While women have tirelessly campaigned for a violence-free Hollywood and brought down powerful men from their position of power, the men have preferred <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/beware-of-the-brocialist-harvey-weinstein-sexism-feminism-gender-femininity-masculinty-metoo-notallmen-bro-code-brocialism-sexual-harassment-harassment-molestation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protecting their peers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and shying away from even touching upon topics of inclusion, harassment, and diversity. If the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/seth-meyers-golden-globes-tina-fey-amy-poehler\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden Globes <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proved that the men of Hollywood were incapable of taking a stand against known perpetrators and make the industry abuse-free for women, the Academy Awards reinforced that idea.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It started with a defiant Ryan Seacrest, who headlined E! Red carpet coverage despite being embroiled in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-5461353\/Ryan-Seacrest-pastes-defiant-smile-Oscars.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual assault allegations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the same year as the Academy dedicating a special section to #MeToo. In fact, the words <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2018\/03\/the-e-oscar-red-carpet-show-was-a-mess.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time\u2019s Up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were also rarely uttered on E!, with Oscar planners following suit and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/metoo-timesup-oscars-2018-ceremony-celebrities-feminism-sexual-assault-ryan-seacrest-a8238836.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dissuading<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> #MeToo or #TimesUp related protests or statements at the Awards, instead of wanting to focus on \u201cthe nominees\u2019 successes.\u201d <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that weren\u2019t enough, the Academy also went ahead and awarded two powerful men accused of abuse in the very same year that it was lauded for not having Casey Affleck presenting an award and snubbing James Franco. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>This year, only six women took home Oscars, including the two women winners as compared to 33 male winners.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former basketball player, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/wp\/2018\/03\/04\/at-the-metoo-oscars-kobe-bryants-win-brings-back-memories-of-his-allegations\/?utm_term=.eda7e2dca52b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kobe Bryant <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won an Oscar for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear Basketball<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a documentary short he wrote and narrated, despite being charged and arrested for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A45269-2004Aug29.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual assault<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2003. Joining his esteemed company was Gary Oldman, who won Best Actor, despite a reputation marred by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/movies\/2018\/03\/05\/why-gary-oldman-and-kobe-bryans-oscars-wins-were-tragic\/394244002\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">domestic violence allegations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the past. What was even worse was that both of these wins were met with a casual shrug for their misdemeanors and fervent applause for their achievements. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In choosing to behave as if neither man has a history of sexual assault, the Academy Awards and its audience not only undermined the collective rage of female actresses, but also implied unwillingness to fight the system. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nominees at Oscars this year then, didn\u2019t just wear a much less integrated rebellious vibe than was showcased at the Golden Globes, but also made a complete mockery of the stage that they were afforded. This collective hypocrisy of the selective support against harassment, both by the Academy and its male nominees, is indeed the night\u2019s greatest tragedy. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s proof a lot remains to be fixed in Hollywood.
