Except, he hasn\u2019t even been nominated.\n\n<\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/oscars-nominations-hollywood-films-academy-award\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomorrow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when the ceremony begins in the wee hours, we\u2019ll all probably guffaw to the usual delivered-as-anticipated battle between two modern giants of acting, this time in the form of Gary Oldman and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/daniel-day-lewis-hollywood-acting-methods-amitabh-bachchan-robert-de-niro-al-pacino\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel Day-Lewis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both Oldman and Day-Lewis are anachronistic, vintage models in a contemporary setting that roll along the tarmac, laying their own carpet as they go. Not setting the bar, but defining measurement in personal terms. You can\u2019t help but be in awe of the pedigree. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare that to a young, yet fastidious, Robert Pattinson, who is seen through the gleam of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> films, those awfully stylistic idylls erected in cinema\u2019s graveyard. The fact that you might still be wondering what performance by Pattinson was Oscar-worthy last year is testament to the fact that once you\u2019ve sold the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/tinder-select-sex-kim-kardashian-salman-khan-online-dating-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good looks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d charm, it is especially difficult to sell the acting chops. Even if you give the kind of swashbuckling, revelatory performance that he did last year in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2017)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I admit I\u2019m a bit of a denial-ist when it comes to acknowledging shifts, whether they occur in the outlook or in the grain of depth. It is like being unable to accept that the same raw vegetable can taste good in something else. Pattinson is the antidote to that assumption. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he hooks and drags you along for the length of the film, from the very moment he bursts on to the screen, as the ragged, off-the-street, hard-to-classify anarchist Connie. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">Through his dirty, unkempt hairdo, his baggy trousers, and his adrenalised speech, there is a sense of inevitability that also makes Connie the most tragic character played on film last year.<\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connie\u2019s introduction is through a sequence where he barges in on a psychiatric evaluation of his brother Nick (played by director Benny Safdie) looking messy, worn yet defiant \u2013 a very un-Pattinson look and very far from the coiffed, rolled-sleeved Edward Cullen he built his reputation playing. Connie\u2019s street-fit righteousness contrasts poignantly with his intellectually slow brother, whom he considers a personal mission to rescue from order of any kind. Connie convinces his brother to assist on a bank job; a comically simple and naive plan that he has come up with for the two of them. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, it all goes downhill from there.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pattinson\u2019s live-wire turn in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 his best performance by some measure \u2013 isn\u2019t his only notable role that can be slated along the edge of the actors\u2019 roundtable, which Day-Lewis and Oldman basically own. Ever since <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pattinson has been on a mission to avenge his own, festishised identity as a heartthrob. And it is to his own credit, his will to outdo his reputation, that Pattinson chose to step down the ladder of stardom, go back to the grounds and work his way up to where he is today \u2013 a refreshingly, fiery young savant of aggression and rage, a thoroughly contemporary actor who is equal measure punk and sophistication, art gallery and the street. In between these opposites, he has now disappeared into several roles. Each essayed with vitality, a vernacular ease that has been a precursor to Pattinson\u2019s greatest performance till date. A blending-in act of the highest order, the other side of which Pattinson emerges having shed the tight-skin of celebrity, and meets human vulnerability at its peak.<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1519971449.png\" alt=\"Robert Good Time\" width=\"724\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-31932\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>Pattinson\u2019s Connie is a distinctly prickly fellow, curdling the skin every now and then with his perpetually disorienting nerviness and the consistently comical acts he tries to overcome it with.<\/p>\n<p>PMC \/ Variety<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In David Cronenberg\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cosmopolis <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2012) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maps to the Stars <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2015) Pattinson showed signs of potential, of a breakaway career that needed to first break away from the heap of cringe that underwrote it. His turn as the mentally challenged survivor Rey in David Michod\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Road <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2014) might have set the template for the Connie of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Violent, uncompromising, and morally ambiguous, there is a fuse-like temperament to both characters. A diametrically opposite, yet of ensuing theme would be his role of Charles Prescott, the future self of a fascist leader in the making, in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Childhood of a Leader <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2015)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the vastly underrated <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lost City of Z <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2017) he mesmerises not just by sporting a boorish <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/gender\/no-you-may-not-touch-my-testosterone-feminism-beards-sexist-masculinity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beard <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but manning up behind it as well. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is probably no greater adulation for an artist, if his work is considered refreshing to his own previous self \u2013 the capacity not only to re-invent but invent to a greater, higher, better degree. Dare we then compare his performance this year with the two leading contenders for the Best Actor award? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Oldman and Day-Lewis acted in period films, which automatically polishes the suavity of their approach \u2013 costumes, make-up, lots of reading, research, and so on. There\u2019s enough to gather your attention. Oldman plays Winston Churchill, an undisputed hero, colonial history notwithstanding, and Day-Lewis brings alive a finicky dressmaker in a strangely codependent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/toxic-men-relationships-dating-twilight-sex-and-the-city-edward-cullen-carrie-mr-big-pride-and-prejudice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relationship with his young wife. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By comparison, Pattinson\u2019s Connie is a distinctly prickly fellow, curdling the skin every now and then with his perpetually disorienting nerviness and the consistently comical acts he tries to overcome it with. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is method to Pattinson\u2019s madness in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well. Through his dirty, unkempt hairdo, his baggy trousers, and his adrenalised speech, there is a sense of inevitability that also makes Connie the most tragic character played on film last year. Pattinson, however, manages to turn us against him. In a way, he plays two people at once, one that we see, and one we\u2019ll look back and sympathise with once <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is over.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The code of the street is to keep hanging, any which way. To some extent through the years that followed the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> films Pattinson barely held onto the coattails of serious acting as well. It is nothing short of miraculous that he undressed himself of the symbolism that stardom carries, and owned a role that eulogises the street \u2013 something his popularity always distanced him from. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ends with a close-up of Connie\u2019s tired eyes, his hair mangled, crowding our vision of them. I had almost forgotten by then that Pattinson indeed was dreamy. He won\u2019t get the Oscar that he deserves but he has surely resurfaced a new animal, a once-marginal actor now escaping the prison of stardom.
