In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/ram-gopal-varma-sarkar-3-rgv-bollywood-aag-satya-naach-hansal-mehta-anurag-kashyap-madhur-bhandarkar-company\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ram Gopal Varma\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> freakishly sleek <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhoot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Urmila Matondkar played Swati, a woman possessed by a the ghost of the person killed in the high rise apartment she and her husband, Vishal (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/golmaal-again-movie-review-rohit-shetty-ajay-devgn-tusshar-kapoor-kunal-khemu-tabu-parineeti-chopra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ajay Devgn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) move into. <\/span>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhoot <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came at a time when the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raaz<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-ification of the Bollywood <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/horror-films-bollywood-ramsay-brothers-ram-gopal-varma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">horror genre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was yet to unfold, and it actually strived to be worthy of the genre. It was one of the earliest instances of taking the genre seriously; the film had no songs, romantic subplots, and instead boasted of an evil spirit backstory that didn\u2019t go down the \u201cjilted lover from the past\u201d route. The novelty of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhoot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s offering as a supernatural horror film lay unmistakably in RGV letting everyday objects acquire ominous overtones instead of ODing on the blood.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the following years, many iterations of horror films saw the light of day; most were profitable, but very few riveting or frightening. Barring a few exceptions, like, the claustrophobic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phobia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Priyadarshan\u2019s semi-enjoyable <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhool Bhulaiyaa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (that relied more on comedy than horror), the genre was essentially relegated to being a clash of \u201cWhich Bhatt Can Make The Most Pointless Horror Sequels?\u201d besides being the very reason for Bipasha Basu\u2019s career.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is until debutante Prosit Roy\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1519968132.jpg\" alt=\"Pari\" width=\"727\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-31928\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>Like Bhoot, <em>Pari\u2019s<\/em> charm lies in its propensity to create mood.<\/p>\n<p>Image credit: Clean Slate Films<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/anushka-sharma-never-bridesmaid-always-bride-virushka\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anushka Sharma\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> third film as a producer, also stars <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kahaani\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> breakout star (and Bengal\u2019s pride) Parambrata Chatterjee, and a menacing Rajat Kapoor. In the film, Sharma plays Rukhsana, an orphan who is found chained and bruised in the middle of a forest after her mother is accidentally run over by Parambrata\u2019s Arnab. With nowhere to go and a band of bloodthirsty exorcists christened \u201cQayamat Andolan\u201d led by the persistent professor Kasim Ali (Rajat Kapoor) after her, Rukhsana takes refuge in Arnab\u2019s house.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/bangladesh-independence-day-india-pakistan-liberation-war-shillong-oranges-border-crossing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bangladesh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/bengalis-nyaka-west-bengal-nyakami-moon-moon-sen-kolkata\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kolkata<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seems like a spiritual version of the Swedish romantic-horror film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ICp4g9p_rgo\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let the Right One In<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(remade in English as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=reRRAEVHq8E\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let Me In<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The film\u2019s plot delves into Rukhsana\u2019s terrifying identity, reveals the motives of witch hunters and offers fascinating socio-political commentary on Bangladesh&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/india-rohingya-rohingya-muslim-refugee-new-delhi-myanmar-delhi-university\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refugee <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crisis and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/article\/847725\/interview-hindus-in-bangladesh-have-faced-ethnic-cleansing-since-1947\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ethnic cleansing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a time when Bollywood is overpopulated with horror films that look like each other\u2019s carbon copies (Really, who can tell apart an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aatma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creature<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also one of our most inventive horror films, creating a world of its own. It helps that the film is aided by an engaging narrative, a stupendous lead, and an able supporting cast. Borrowing heavily from folklore and the Quran, (particularly the Ifrit, the most powerful and dreaded jinns), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sheds the baggage that comes with the bastardisation of Bollywood horror and delivers a film that is as thrilling as it is nauseating. In doing so, it reinvigorates a genre that has been marred by cheap thrills and jump scares.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhoot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> charm lies in its propensity to create mood. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/bengali-bhodrolok-nyaka-obhimaan-byomkesh\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bangaliness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looms throughout <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Boroline is the evergreen saviour, there is chatter of Kolkata Book Fair\u2019s unceremonious location change, a sneaky view of Victoria Memorial, and a token shot of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/grub\/versova-mumbai-india-fish-market-pomfret-rawas-basa-hekru\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maach-bhaat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 but in a way that isn\u2019t overtly manufactured. Moreover, Roy exploits the gloomy bluish tones, and a rainy Kolkata (every Bengali really wishes it rained that much) to create an uncomfortable atmosphere, where a seemingly harmless move like Rukshana drowning her head in a bucket full of water or cutting her nails, is enough to keep one on the edge. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>If there\u2019s one thing that thwarts <em>Pari<\/em> from dunking in mediocrity, is Anushka Sharma\u2019s performance as the feral, modern-day Mowgli. <\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, where <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triumphs is in refusing to play its gore for cheap thrills, which is why even though there\u2019s ample blood and spine-curdling violence (especially the scenes depicting the cruel ways the Andolan goes about in annihilating evil), it assumes the grammar of a thriller. Not only does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shy away from drowning itself in the worst horror tropes but it also peppers the film\u2019s proceedings and story with quirks, and twists that although not unique, seem at least accomplished. In fact, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> actually manages to utilise its tropes in a way that makes one want to invest in its universe.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be fair, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t without its problems. There\u2019s a needless <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/shaadi-mein-zaroor-aana-arranged-marriage-rajkumar-rao-kriti-harbanda\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arranged marriage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> subplot, an awkward love ballad that appears completely at odds with its doomed atmospheric setting, and an overexcited background score. There\u2019s also the film\u2019s over-reliance on cults, witchery, black magic, and blind faith for its source material that gets a little too much to digest at times.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, if there\u2019s one thing that thwarts <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from dunking in mediocrity, is Anushka Sharma\u2019s performance as the feral, modern-day <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/people\/mowgli-girl-uttar-pradesh-india-katarniaghat-wildlife-sanctuary-bahraich\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mowgli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As someone who has been criticised for being unreliably vivid, the actress is a portrait in restraint, regardless of whether it is indulging in acts of barbarity or briskly switching into moments of tenderness, jealousy, vulnerability or empathy. Her prowess over her facial expressions, body language, and haunting stares elevate <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several notches, making it possible to commiserate with the very face of evil. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, if <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is able to legitimise and mainstream the genre beyond the fervid horror film-lovers who\u2019re willing to consume umpteen Vikram Bhatt sequels, it\u2019ll be because of this Sharmaji ki ladki\u2019s incredible gamble.<\/span>\n\n\u00a0\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anushka Sharma\u2019s Pari is one of the rare instances of an A-lister putting their weight behind the bastardised Bollywood horror.
