{"id":2172,"date":"2016-03-29T16:52:08","date_gmt":"2016-03-29T11:22:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/dum-laga-ke-haisha-ayushmann-khuranna-bhumi-pednekar\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T19:56:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T14:26:13","slug":"dum-laga-ke-haisha-ayushmann-khuranna-bhumi-pednekar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=2172","title":{"rendered":"The Evergreen Heftiness of Dum Laga Ke Haisha"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p><span class=\"dropcap\">T<\/span><\/p><\/div><p>here\u2019s a scene in Sharat Katariya\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dum Laga Ke Haisha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where an elated and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/fat-people-fuck-sex-intercourse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overweight <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandhya Verma (an impressive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/shubh-mangal-saavdhan-review-ayushmann-khurrana-bhumi-pednekar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhumi Pednekar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) dances with pure abandon minutes before getting married to the distraught Prem Prakash Tiwari (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/meri-pyaari-bindu-parineeti-chopra-ayushmann-khurana-yash-raj-films\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayushmann Khurrana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The setting is quietly comic; a teeming community centre in Haridwar where Sandhya and Prem are one of the many couples whose marriage is getting officiated that day. Just as her in-laws arrive at the venue, Sandhya joins the other brides-to-be and gyrates deliriously to the music: Enjoying herself and acutely unconscious of her body, even as Prem, his friends, and her in-laws stare at her in horror. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Sandhya, her weight poses no great constraints. But to onlookers, this autonomy over her body is the reason for their glaring embarrassment. They look away disapprovingly, but the damage is done.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a way, this precious little scene sets the tone for what Katariya intends to achieve with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dum Laga Ke Haisha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Like this scene, what made the film revolutionary wasn\u2019t just that it starred an overweight actor essaying its overweight heroine (or in film parlance: a \u201cbrave\u201d film). It was the fact that for the first time, a young heroine completely refused to treat it as an inadequacy (unlike in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaandar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In doing so, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dum Laga Ke Haisha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sneakily shed a light on the frustrations and resentments that the weight of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/bro-code-toxic-masculinity-woke-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspirational manhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inflicts on innumerable small-town men across the country. Couple that with Katariya\u2019s astute writing which brings alive the \u201990s small-town flavour \u2013 replete with Kumar Sanu\u2019s trademark \u201cHey hey\u201d, mohalla politics, abundance of dusty cassettes, and Limca being dispensed as a soother for an upset stomach \u2013 and you have Yash Raj Films\u2019 strongest, and arguably its best romantic comedy until date. With <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dum Laga Ke Haisha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Katariya managed the impossible: paying a nostalgia-induced homage to everything that made the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/childrens-day-90s-kids-childhood-nostalgia-mr-bean-shin-chan-cartoon-network-wwe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201990s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what they were without an iota of irony.<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1519738703.jpg\" alt=\"Dum Laga Ke Haisha\" width=\"732\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-31793\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p><em>Dum Laga Ke Haisha<\/em> sneakily shed a light on the frustrations and resentments that the weight of aspirational manhood inflicts on innumerable small-town men across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Image credit: Yash Raj Films<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The year is 1995, and the film\u2019s lead Prem Prakash Tiwari, nicknamed Lapoo, is a 25-year-old loserish man-child who spends his days listening to Kumar Sanu\u2019s melodious ode to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/newness-nicholas-hoult-laia-costa-drake-doremous-dating-apps-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and getting bullied by his waspish father. Prem, who has failed to clear his Class 10 exams twice, and is forced to run a small cassette shop, also devotes the better part of his day at a local RSS shakha in a bid to retain a semblance of masculinity. In fact, Katariya\u2019s quiet mockery of the shakha culture where overgrown men heap eloquence on the bravery of Bhagat Singh, Bose, and Vajpayee in khaki knickers, while being juvenile cowards in their personal lives, is a treat to watch. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prem\u2019s emasculation \u2013 whether it is his father treating him like a wayward child and leaving him twenty rupees as pocket money or his ignoble illiteracy \u2013 hits a crescendo when his family forcefully marries him off to a fat girl. He vehemently protests the very idea, drowning out his family\u2019s pleas to think of the alliance as a financial trade-off. Sandhya is educated, on her way to becoming a teacher, and is in a position to revive the family\u2019s income, they tell him. And, after all, what is wrong with her? But, Prem is unable to digest the practicality of the alliance because it comes at the cost of his own self-worth. For him, marrying an ugly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/world-anti-obesity-day-body-image-issues\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> girl will be the last straw, perennially reinstating his status as an utter failure. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prem expresses his resentment in generous doses. He discusses his unsatisfying <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/lipstick-under-my-burkha-movie-review-konkona-sen-censorship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with his shakha friends (a priceless iteration of the boys\u2019 club) and even compares sleeping with her to a \u201cliving hell\u201d. To hold on to a shred of aspirational masculinity, Prem has to consistently mistreat her. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes a self-aware and unapologetic Sandhya to teach Prem that he can\u2019t achieve the mantle of manhood if he is unable to see beyond her weight. Yet, even when the nagging awareness that love could be out of her reach envelops her, she refuses to be burdened by her size. Despite her husband\u2019s loserish reputation, and his misbehaviour, she persists, trying to seduce him, understand him, and even love him. For, she, unlike him, is willing to look beyond. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes Sandhya all the more affecting is the fact that Bhumi Pednekar doesn\u2019t just play the character, but is indeed the character. Likewise, Ayushmann Khurrana \u2013 now the Bollywood poster boy for smashing<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/world-anti-obesity-day-body-image-issues\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> toxic masculinity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 evokes the vulnerability, misplaced rage, and the surprising entitlement that grasps numerous men in their relationships with women. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1519738716.jpg\" alt=\"Dum Laga Ke Haisha\" width=\"610\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-31792\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>It takes a self-aware and unapologetic Sandhya to teach Prem that he can\u2019t achieve the mantle of manhood if he is unable to see beyond her weight<\/p>\n<p>Image credit: Yash Raj Films<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the real reason <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dum Laga Ke Haisha <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is such a surprising film is because it comes from a studio that has come to paint a roseate picture of romance, the non-achievement of which upsets its hero so much. It goes against the grain of every template that Yash Raj has set up. It rails against the thin-is-beautiful heroine stereotype it has consistently worked hard to create. In film after film, whether it was Vaani Kapoor in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/befikre-ranveer-singh-india-vaani-kapoor-bollywood-aditya-chopra\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Befikre<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/happy-birthday-aishwarya-rai-bachchan-abhishek-bachhan-amitabh-bachchan-sunheri-dhoom-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aishwarya Rai Bachchan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dhoom 3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Rani Mukherjee in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hum Tum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the studio has peddled this narrow perception of beauty. It also eschews Yash Raj\u2019s studio perception of what a \u201csmall-town\u201d ought to look like (a vision that was so off-putting in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and actually imbibes the flavour of Haridwar in the \u201990s. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come to think of it, I\u2019d have liked <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dum Laga Ke Haisha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even if it just stopped at disseminating the lesson that an overweight woman doesn\u2019t need to lose weight to be attractive or worthy of love. But, Katariya guarantees that we fall in love with the film by extending it to the climax: When Prem succeeds in carrying Sandhya in the \u201cDum Laga Ke\u201d contest, it becomes a brilliant metaphor of him carrying the burden of entitlement, before realising it\u2019s imperative that he sheds it. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a wholesome memo.
