Its arrival came almost unsuspectingly \u2014 similar to the time Michael Scott tried sneaking in a resignation on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/halloween-india-trick-treat-candies-usa-holidays-spooky-costumes-theme-parties\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halloween<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 set off by a tweet praising <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/russell-peters-netflix-the-indian-detective-comedy-indian-stereotypes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> latest arrival <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer Eye, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that sat high up on my timeline.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reluctant, but curious, I put a pause on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Office<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> binge and immediately fired up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/google-youtube-wikipedia-instagram-eddie-murphy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, determined to glean as much trivia as I could about this new show that I had heard about for the first time that day. Within minutes of trawling the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/memes-language-millennial-internet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">internet,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it dawned on me that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer Eye<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had a unanimous \u201cmust-watch\u201d rating from both critics and pop-culture devotees. It took me all of 20 minutes for me to modify <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer Eye\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reputation to the most dissected and critically acclaimed show. Suddenly, everyone around me, heralded the show that featured a team of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/bollywood\/alauddin-khilji-padmaavat-homosexuality-malik-kafur\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gay men <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cdispensing advice on fashion, food, and wine to their straight counterparts\u201d as \u201can antidote to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/toxic-men-relationships-dating-twilight-sex-and-the-city-edward-cullen-carrie-mr-big-pride-and-prejudice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic masculinity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d that the world really needed. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was at that point that I grasped the magnitude of the situation: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer Eye<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the \u201cit show\u201d of the moment and every minute I spent watching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Office<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was actually time wasted. It was time that I could instead use to hop onto the bandwagon of the latest pop-culture obsession and rave about it as much as the next person. At that moment, I had to make what I \u2013 a self-respecting<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/newness-nicholas-hoult-laia-costa-drake-doremous-dating-apps-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> millennial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who treasures the dark circles sleepless Netflix nights have gifted her \u2013 believed was the most difficult choice in the history of my existence. On one hand, was the trusted familiarity of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Office <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reruns, guaranteed to lift my spirits. And on the other, there was my millennial-induced obsessive personality that couldn\u2019t take the ignominy of being left out of the conversation around the newest pop-culture \u201cit\u201d thang. After all, I didn\u2019t want to end up being the person who caught up with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer Eye<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when it no longer sat proud on the throne of the cultural \u201cit\u201d moment, did I?<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Back in the day, we watched <em>F.R.I.E.N.D.S.<\/em>, because we loved it. Today, however, we watch <em>Queer Eye<\/em>, because we\u2019re obligated to.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am not alone in giving in to the tyranny of keeping up with pop-culture moments \u2013 all 987,5467 of them. As it turns out, living in the era of Netflix, immediate streaming, and zero torrenting comes with its own perks, including an all-consuming greed to be updated with anything and everything that was making the headlines and fuelling thinkpiece culture. It doesn\u2019t matter how niche (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Casting JonBenet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), demanding (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manhunt: Unabomber<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or time-consuming (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/altered-carbon-review-netflix-immortality-humanity\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altered Carbon<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) the challenge in front of us is. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it is exhausting. Consuming TV shows, movies, and podcasts the moment they are out, instead of relishing them in our own sweet time like the good old days when the hype and the \u201cit show\u201d title lasted longer than 24 hours, is more draining than a demanding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/relationships-dating-advice-love-romance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relationship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This fatigue of keeping up is entirely of our own making. It easily surpasses the trauma of not having avocado with every meal. It follows us like a shadow, and mercilessly takes away the joy of discovering a show on our own and falling in love with it the same way Hazel and Augustus fell in love: slowly, and then all at once.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More often than not, it\u2019s impossible to be a passive participant to this exercise. You are expected to be an active front-runner, at least some of the times; you have to be able to identify the \u201cits\u201d of the moment before anyone else does. No matter that by the time you have anointed Beyonce\u2019s visual album, the conversation has bypassed her entirely to land at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/black-panther-movie-review-wakanda-marvel\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Black Panther<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">album, with pit-stops at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serial<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Vandal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/shape-of-water-monster-romance\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Shape Of Water<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granted the idea of obsessing over anything isn\u2019t particularly new. Our parents were \u201cdie hard\u201d fans of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/music\/john-lennon-birthday-beatles-music\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Beatles<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Readers of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Strand <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 19th-century England, queued up outside the magazine\u2019s office to get their hit of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, where the short stories were originally serialised. But I doubt they centred their daily lives around their pop-culture interests \u2013 they couldn\u2019t, because there just wasn\u2019t that much to keep up with. Back then, interest in a band or a TV show was just a hobby, to be indulged in, in your free time, after you had spent a hard day at work, your household responsibilities were done, and you\u2019d put the kids to sleep. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>Consuming TV shows, movies, and podcasts the moment they are out is more draining than a demanding relationship.<\/p><\/blockquote> \n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our pursuits, on the other hand, are frightening solitary because we\u2019re always on the lookout for the next \u201cit\u201d. It\u2019s eventually a never-ending obsessive cycle, bereft of an iota of joy. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in the day, we watched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/seinfeld-friends-jerry-seinfeld-elaine-sitcoms-comedy\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F.R.I.E.N.D.S.<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because we loved it. Today, however, we watch <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer Eye<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because we\u2019re obligated to. At this point, our lives are straight out of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=2&#038;v=6JLWQEuz2gA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sketch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portlandia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where co-creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein race each other in a game called \u201cDid You Read it?\u201d over breakfast. They throw the latest thinkpiece headlines at each other (\u201cDid you guys read that thing in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Yorker<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last month about how golf is an analogy for marriage?\u201d) hoping to call the other\u2019s bluff. As the questions and their desperation gets absurder by the second, it\u2019s obvious that this obsession to be forever updated can never have a happy ending.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this never-ending cycle, is there any hope for any of us to get back to enjoying watching reruns of our favourite old shows without worrying about checking out the latest \u201cit\u201d? I\u2019d tell you, but I don\u2019t have the time to. BRB, obsessing about the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/junkee.com\/queer-eye-antoni-investigation\/146831\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food &#038; Wine Guy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer Eye<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the age of Netflix and zero torrenting, we\u2019re all consumed by a desperate, obsessive urge to watch a TV show, movie and, podcast the moment they are out.
