Sometimes, we\u2019re set up with our shows by friends through recommendations; other times we have a chance drunken encounter during a late-night binge that transforms into something substantial. Either way, the initial weeks are spent in heady rush of marathon viewing. Then, a level of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/love-and-sex\/relationships-dating-advice-love-romance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comfort <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sets in, and we commit to our chosen one, settling in to await each season and episode with bated breath. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My relationship with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/game-of-thrones-season-7-got-spoilers-fans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones<\/span><\/i> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">began the same way. But Season 8 of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoT <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will not be arriving this year, and strangely enough, I feel relieved.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The show and I have reached the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/seinfeld-friends-jerry-seinfeld-elaine-sitcoms-comedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ross-Rachel <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stage where it\u2019s time to realise that we should be on a break. For seven seasons, I\u2019ve been a loyal viewer, and have defended it in its early years, saying it is more than the sum of its flying body parts, tits, and dragons. I have then basked in the glow of vindication as it turned into a pop culture juggernaut. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, at the risk of sounding like a jilted lover, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has changed. The show\u2019s seventh season was also the point at which our relationship suffered from the seven-year itch. It was a dystopian season, which disregarded logic, disdained plot development, and disrespected its viewers. Even closing with the awesome visual of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/game-of-thrones-climate-change-global-warming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Night King <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tearing down The Wall with his zombie ice dragon couldn\u2019t make up for the fact that HBO put forth the show\u2019s weakest season to date.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this points to relationship strain, created by years of expecting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoT <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be the best thing on TV every time it airs. Add to that the massive burden of overhype that meets every season, and it\u2019s no wonder that the last one was crap and full of errors. A year without <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means that we will have the haze of nostalgia, and enough of a breather in which to remember the show\u2019s golden moments: like the Battle of Blackwater and the Red Wedding, which kept us hooked for years. <\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\"><p>This year, without GoT hogging our screens, we can finally begin to date other shows, minus the guilt of feeling like we\u2019re neglecting our true love.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should hold on to those memories, but let\u2019s not get too hung up on our ex, because there\u2019s been some seriously great TV out there since <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoT <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">premiered. During the last seven years, the HBO flagship show has eclipsed so many great offerings. For instance, the pirate extravaganza <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Sails<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which mixed romance, bloodshed, intrigue, and a sweeping, period setting just as masterfully as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ran through its entire four-season arc without getting its due credit. This year, without <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoT <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hogging our screens, we can finally begin to date other shows, minus the guilt of feeling like we\u2019re neglecting our true love.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can check out that other hot thang on HBO, i.e. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Westworld<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is due to drop its second season this year. Watch it for how it takes its mind-warping blend of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pov\/the-bots-must-be-crazy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sci-fi <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and western genres further (way more exciting than watching Jon Snow and Daenerys engage in yet another incestuous episode). If you need a break from the gratuitous violence and rape that seems to riddle <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tune in to the latest season of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 100<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a show set in a dystopian future that still manages to portray realistic same-sex relationships and relies on its strong female leads. Speaking of which, Season 2 of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Jones <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is also out this year, hopefully to drag the Marvel TV show universe out of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/superheroes-marvel-dc-comics-avengers-justice-league-iron-fist-jessica-jones-daredevil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">downward spiral <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s been stuck in since <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iron Fist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And then there\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electric Dreams<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an anthology series based on the work of Philip K Dick and starring heavy-hitters like Bryan Cranston and Terrence Howard, which promises to be Amazon Prime\u2019s answer to Netflix\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Mirror<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, anyone who has seen the episode \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/black-mirror-hang-dj-online-dating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hang the DJ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in the latest season of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Mirror <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be able to understand my equation with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at this juncture. I\u2019m at the point where I know I want to see through my relationship with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, waiting for the happy ending I know we both deserve after so much time.
