It wasn\u2019t enough that we had to witness a frighteningly dull SRK-Imtiaz Ali union in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/jab-harry-met-sejal-review-shah-rukh-khan-anushka-sharma-imtiaz-ali\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jab Harry Met Sejal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while simultaneously tolerating three hours of Salman Khan going full <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/tubelight-salman-khan-sohail-khan-india-china-bollywood-little-boy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tubelight<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bollywood in 2017 took it several notches lower by churning out glorious abominations like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/begum-jaan-review-vidya-balan-srijit-mukherji-rajkahini-rituparna-bollywood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begum Jaan<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/kaabil-hrithik-roshan-yami-gautam-bollywood-kaabil-review-ronit-roy-rohit-roy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaabil<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/true-crime\/my-encounter-with-the-real-life-haseena-parkar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haseena Parkar<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Raabta, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/disarre\/exclusive-pil-sanjay-dutt-govinda-ande-ka-funda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhoomi<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/series\/fitoor-mishra\/fitoor-mishra-commentarre-judwaa-2-varun-dhawan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judwaa 2<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at routine intervals. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, the biggest letdown of all, one that left a bigger hole in our hearts than the combined disappointment of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/rangoon-kangana-ranaut-shahid-kapoor-saif-ali-khan-vishal-bhardwaj-haider-hamlet-kaminey-bollywood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rangoon<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/phillauri-anushka-sharma-harry-potter-jk-rowling-jane-austen-jaipur-literature-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phillauri<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/raees-shah-rukh-khan-amitabh-bachchan-don-parzania-anaam-darr-bollywood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raees<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was how 2017 was the year that mercilessly killed our rose-tinted memories of the \u201990s.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year saw most of our favourite actors from the \u201990s attempting to stage a comeback into our shrunken attentions spans. This year also witnessed them humbled (maybe), considering not one could recreate the sway they once wielded over the box office. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Govinda kicked off the unceremonious proceedings back in March by starring in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/govinda-aa-gaya-hero-bollywood-india-happy-ending-coolie-no-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aa Gaya Hero<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a film he also wrote and produced. In the film, Govinda played a daredevil cop who completely neglects all laws of gravity and emerges victorious on all counts. The two-hour-long borefest was indication of Govinda\u2019s ambitious desire to forcibly yoke the audience to a time-machine and take them back to the years when he was Bollywood\u2019s Hero No 1. Unfortunately for him, the 1990s were nearly two decades ago. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1514557078.jpg\" alt=\"Govinda\" width=\"724\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-29405\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>This year saw most of our favourite actors from the \u201990s attempting to stage a comeback into our shrunken attentions spans.\n\nImage credit: Twitter<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Govinda, like Raveena Tandon, Sridevi, and Sanjay Dutt still seemed to be in a world where they could afford to snatch lead roles and expect to be lauded with appreciation and box-office success by virtue of their mere presence. A time when the coherence of a film\u2019s plot could be relegated to the background. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a coincidence, the only comeback vehicle for Raveena, Sridevi, and Sanjay Dutt was that of a parent avenging a raped daughter in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maatr, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/mom-sridevi-nawazuddin-siddiqui-akshaye-khanna-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MOM<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhoomi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> respectively. These three films had another thing in common; their need to be socially relevant was overpowered by their greed to be the centre of the rape-revenge universe. If <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maatr<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MOM<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seemed half-baked and problematic for advocating self-styled vigilantism, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhoomi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a masterclass in being tone-deaf, and reduced its vulnerable protagonist to a mere prop. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there were the Deol brothers, who starred in Shreyas Talpade\u2019s painful <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poster Boys<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even though there were instances of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/humour\/bobby-deol-birthday-quiz-dj-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobby Deol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing traces of his comic timing, the film was so riddled with cliches and unfunny gags that it became a parody of itself.<\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">This year saw most of our favourite actors from the \u201990s attempting to stage a comeback into our shrunken attentions spans.<\/blockquote>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did we get here, guys? We were a generation that spent evenings perfecting moves from \u201cKaate Nahi Kat-te Ye Din Ye Raat\u201d and \u201cTu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast\u201d, and could spout lines from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deewana Mastana <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the drop of a hat. We\u2019re absolutely gutted. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Bollywood couldn\u2019t stop there, could you? In 2017, you volunteered to ensure that every time we think about the \u201990s, we\u2019d only experience one feeling: cringe. Leading the pack was David Dhawan\u2019s re-engineered <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judwaa 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the film that set such abysmally low standards in arrogant sexism and misogyny which made the \u201990s look politically correct. The film\u2019s remixed versions of Anu Malik\u2019s \u201cChalti Hai Kya 9 Se 12\u201d and \u201cOonchi Hai Building\u201d, songs that were the very definition of a Lit AF party, were so offensively jarring that UNESCO declared them as the worst decision David Dhawan has ever made. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1514557330.jpg\" alt=\"Mom Sridevi\" width=\"543\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-29406\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p> If Maatr and MOM seemed half-baked and problematic for advocating self-styled vigilantism, Bhoomi was a masterclass in being tone-deaf, and reduced its vulnerable protagonist to a mere prop.\n\nImage credit: Twitter<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judwaa 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stiff competition was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/pop-culture\/golmaal-again-movie-review-rohit-shetty-ajay-devgn-tusshar-kapoor-kunal-khemu-tabu-parineeti-chopra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golmaal Again<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that took up the noble intention of completely destroying the classic \u201cNeend Churayi Meri\u201d from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ishq<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If there\u2019s anything worse than watching Ajay Devgn make 300 crore with every <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golmaal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movie, it\u2019s definitely watching him <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trying<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to dance to a song you once held dear. Not to be left behind in the race to the finish, were Abbas Mastan and Sonakshi Sinha who contributed the ear-bleeding remixes of \u201cGulabi Ankhein\u201d and \u201cTu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arre.co.in\/social-commentary\/childrens-day-90s-kids-childhood-nostalgia-mr-bean-shin-chan-cartoon-network-wwe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nostalgia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a powerful weapon, one that should be wielded sparingly and with absolute care. Sadly, that\u2019s a memo Bollywood missed.
