ore than a year after the announcement of the all-woman installment of the Ocean franchise, the first full-length trailer of <\/span>Ocean\u2019s 8<\/span><\/i> finally dropped yesterday. And boy, it couldn\u2019t have come at a better time. The spinoff, that\u2019s slated to release in June next year, stars eight badass Grammy-, Oscar-, and Golden Globe-winning women, from Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling to Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina.<\/span>\n\nIn the film, Bullock plays Debbie Ocean (her character is a sister to George Clooney\u2019s Danny Ocean) and the trailer begins with her getting out of the prison after being incarcerated for about five years. She then embarks on putting together a team of the coolest thieves who\u2019ll help her steal a $150 million necklace from Daphne Kluge (Anne Hathaway) at the annual Met Gala. Cate Blanchett\u2019s Lou is the second-in-command to Debbie, much the same way Brad Pitt\u2019s Rusty Ryan was to Danny.<\/span>\n\nAmong the other women, Mindy Kaling plays a counterfeit jewellery-maker, whose mom just wants her to get married (#IndianRepresent), Rihanna plays the resident hacker, Sarah Paulson is a mom about to go on a \u201cvery special work trip\u201d, Helena Bonham Carter is a sneaky seamstress, and Awkwafina is a thief with a reputation for cunning hand tricks. All in all, these strong-as-hell women look like they can get shit done. June can\u2019t come fast enough.<\/span>\n\nIn fact, the utter coolness of <\/span>Ocean 8<\/span><\/i>\u2019s trailer is especially heightened because it comes in a year where the prevailing climate is being dictated by <\/span>women<\/span><\/a>: Those who have been brave enough to speak out about <\/span>sexism<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>harassment<\/span><\/a>, and aid in the downfall of <\/span>powerful men<\/span><\/a> who have been getting away scot-free despite exploiting their position of power for several years. It\u2019s the year of women; they broke the silence, reclaimed their space in the industry, started a worldwide #MeToo movement, and made it to the cover of TIME Magazine. Moreover, it also comes in a year that witnessed the unprecedented success of female-led studio releases like <\/span>Wonder Woman<\/span><\/i><\/a>, which was also directed by a woman and <\/span>Girls Trip<\/span><\/i>, which is this year\u2019s biggest live-action comedy hit. <\/span>\n\nRemember how cathartic it felt to watch Gal Gadot absolutely smashing it on screen in <\/span>Wonder Woman<\/span><\/i>? <\/span>Ocean\u2019s 8 <\/span><\/i>promises just that eight times over.
