I<\/span>t\u2019s a truth universally acknowledged that if you\u2019re born into a <\/p>Rajput family<\/a>, you will grow up immersed in history. We\u2019re a proud people, so in my Amar Chitra Katha comics and evening storytelling sessions, I\u2019ve heard tales of Rajput valour and honour, from Rana Pratap to Rana Sanga. I\u2019ve been intoxicated by the heady brew of romancing the past, and it has led to a lifelong fascination with history. A fascination that suddenly, the whole country seems to share.\n\nWith Sanjay Leela Bhansali\u2019s period film Padmaavat<\/i>, the story of Rani Padmini and her resistance against the Sultan of Delhi, Alauddin Khilji<\/a>, everyone in the country seems to be obsessed with historical authenticity. Rajput groups, led by Rajput Karni Sena<\/a>, saw room for our cultural heritage to be misrepresented, and came forth to protest the film\u2019s release in typical Indian fashion \u2013 violence<\/a> and vandalism<\/a>. What would Prithviraj Chauhan have to say about his descendants turning to Shiv Sena shenanigans (Senanigans)?\n\nThe Big Worry has been the depiction of Rani Padmini \u2013 would she be (falsely) shown as consorting with Khilji, would she uphold the great and hoary ideals of Rajput womanhood, and would her ghoomar<\/a> dance be on point? Rani Padmini is no mere Piku or Fanny, so Deepika Padukone\u2019s portrayal has been under intense scrutiny since the first protests<\/a> started last March. The Padmaavat<\/em> drama has seen more twists and turns than the actual Siege of Chittorgarh. Death threats have been issued against Deepika and SLB, the film\u2019s release was postponed until after the election season, the censor board called for a name change\u00a0\u2013 Padmavati<\/em> became Padmaavat\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/em>and Deepika\u2019s \u201c<\/span>offensive\u201d<\/span> midriff was made Rajput-friendly. Meanwhile, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh hopped on to the bandwagon, demanding a ban on the film after<\/em> the Supreme Court rejected their plea. Amid all this, the Rajput Karni Sena has remained adamant, refusing to call off its war against the film. The Sena\u00a0has been up in arms about Padmaavat\u2019s<\/em> supposed distortion of historical facts. And it\u2019s true, Padmaavat<\/i>\u00a0is a gross misrepresentation of facts\u2026 just not the ones the Karni Sena is so upset about.\n\nThis is not a sarcastic call-out of Padmaavat<\/i>\u2019s source material, a medieval poem written two centuries after the siege it was based on took place. Even though there is considerable debate over whether the events in Malik Muhammad Jayasi\u2019s Padmavat<\/i> represent history or fantasy, this isn\u2019t about the legitimacy of Rani Padmini\u2019s existence. It is Ranveer Singh\u2019s Sultan Alauddin Khilji<\/a> whose character has been assassinated, and who is the subject of a deliberate demonisation campaign.\n\nRani Padmini may or may not have been an actual historical figure, but Alauddin Khilji<\/a> certainly was. As many schoolchildren have learned, much to their despair, it is not possible to be the Sultan of Delhi for a 20-year reign and not leave behind a trove of historical records. Try whatever right-wing logical acrobatics you wish, you can\u2019t deny that he is one of the best-known monarchs from medieval Indian history, one who saved India from the wrath of the Mongols<\/a>.\n

It is Ranveer Singh\u2019s Sultan Alauddin Khilji<\/a> whose character has been assassinated, and who is the subject of a deliberate demonisation campaign.<\/blockquote>\nBut who needs records, when you can have a historical figure resemble any trending character du jour? Ranveer Singh\u2019s look as the Sultan has been compared to both Thorin Oakenshield<\/a> from The Hobbit<\/i> and Khal Drogo<\/a> from Game of Thrones<\/i>. He dresses in black furs, greedily rips meat from the bone like a Viking, and conveys a general sense of savage danger. His army marches at his back like a band of roving raiders, led by an Alauddin<\/a> who seems more beast than man.\n\nThe only problem with accepting this version of Alauddin Khilji<\/a> is that it requires me to go back and set fire to every history textbook I read as a student from school to college. Khilji might have been tall, dark, and handsome like Ranveer, but a caveman he was not. Instead of Thorin and Drogo, we\u2019d probably find a closer reel parallel to Alauddin in Dilip Kumar\u2019s Salim in Mughal-e-Azam<\/i>.\n\nLike Salim, Alauddin<\/a> was a noble from birth, born as a nephew to the Sultan Jalaluddin, who later adopted him as his son. As seen in paintings<\/a> of him, he would have been attired in all the finery of the lordly class, a far cry from the ragged furs we see him wearing in Padmaavat<\/i>. Also, he was hardly an uncivilised savage (that honour goes to the goons beating up the filmmaker), as his tax reforms and treaties with Hindu kings hint at a ruler who understood the power of efficiency and compromise.\n\nNaturally, I was surprised, when I saw a kohl-eyed Alauddin Khilji<\/a> who looks like an extra that got lost looking for the sets of Conan the Barbarian<\/i>. The real Khilji could have been cruel like most conquerors are, but I wonder if he really stomped around bare-chested in his camp and went mindlessly hunting for an ostrich. He might even have been a psychopath, but he was definitely not unkempt.\n\nBut Khilji\u2019s portrayal as a degenerate ruler has paled in the face of the shock of realising that it has been Rani Padmini\u2019s depiction which has been problematic for the rest of the nation. Of course, protecting a Rajput queen\u2019s reputation, even one who may not have actually existed, comes before the realistic depiction of a Muslim ruler.\n\nJust imagine how much grief Bhansali could have spared himself had he just outright declared that Alauddin<\/a> was his film\u2019s villain, and would be portrayed as such. It would have satisfied the rabid Rajput conservatives and spared him a slap, scored him some brownie points with people who enjoy their history bigoted, and let him celebrate Diwali without his rangoli<\/a> being ruined. Instead, he wanted his film to be taken seriously as a period flick, and ended up paying the price.\n\nWhat do we learn from the Padmaavat<\/em> episode, kids? Historical accuracy is cheap, nationalistic pride is priceless. This is how films like Mohenjo Daro<\/i><\/a> and Asoka<\/i> get made, despite presenting ancient India as a land where every character has a Gold\u2019s Gym membership and gets full body waxing done. There is a way to bring alive India\u2019s colourful history. All we need, is to get our priorities right.\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
