{"id":1383,"date":"2016-07-28T08:58:11","date_gmt":"2016-07-28T08:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/?p=1383"},"modified":"2026-07-17T14:05:25","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T14:05:25","slug":"india-rohingya-rohingya-muslim-refugee-new-delhi-myanmar-delhi-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/13.207.105.184\/?p=1383","title":{"rendered":"A Day in the Life of Delhi\u2019s Rohingya Refugee"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"container page-content\"><p>\n\n<span class=\"dropcap\">T<\/span>\n\n<\/div>\nhe road to hell, they say, is paved with good intentions but eventually leads to eternal damnation. If you look hard enough, you can find that road between South Delhi\u2019s urban villages Mandanpur Khadar and Jasola. The road &#8212; partly tarred <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and fully broken &#8212; is covered in dust, and soot is rising from the metro construction work nearby. At the end of the road lies a cluster of kacha houses made of wood and brick, providing temporary but inadequate relief to 75 Rohingya families against an uncertain future.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rohingyas are the nowhere people. They don\u2019t belong in Myanmar and they certainly don\u2019t belong in India&#8230; perpetually stuck in Limbo, the First Circle of Hell. Historically referred to as Arkanese Indians, the Rohingyas are a stateless people from the Buddhist-dominated Rakhine State in Myanmar. They\u2019ve been persecuted in the country ever since they were denied citizenship under the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestateless.com\/2017\/08\/annan-report-calls-for-review-of-1982-citizenship-law.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1982 Burmese Citizenship Law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was followed by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-38091816\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">state-sponsored ethnic cleansing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the community. Of an estimated <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestateless.com\/2017\/08\/annan-report-calls-for-review-of-1982-citizenship-law.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> million Rohingyas in 2015, 9,00,000 now reside in neighbouring Bangladesh, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailystar.net\/world\/myanmar-rohingya-refugee-crisis-1%2C000-killed-Myanmar-%20violence-%20un-rapporteur-1459426\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thousands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been killed. Their <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av\/world-asia-41219840\/who-is-burning-down-rohingya-villages\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">villages <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are being burnt by the Burmese army, which is planting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/rohingya-refugees-crossing-into-bangladesh-face-another-threat-land-mines\/2017\/09\/13\/c0f80239-b9d9-40d6-9179-b9dfa8b0621d_story.html?utm_term=.558c7bb051d7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">landmines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along their road to freedom. But the gravest travesty is that it is all taking place under the watchful eye of Nobel Peace Prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mohammad Shakir is one of the nowhere people. The crown jewel of his family, he is studying Commerce in nearby Noor Nagar\u2019s government school. He hopes to become an English professor some day. Whether he will achieve his ambition, though, is anyone\u2019s guess. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like several other Rohingyas, Shakir\u2019s family came to Delhi around 2012. The Rohingyas, who were able to escape the violence, entered Bangladesh, while some crossed over the border to enter India via West Bengal. Three hundred and seventy-five of those built the Jasola settlement. Multiple protests and demonstrations from the community have not really had an effect on the Indian government that chooses to leave them alone, owing to their UN refugee visas. But without any semblance of a structured camp and lodgings, the Rohingyas have been left to fend for themselves. <\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1505743672.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-25540\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>Mohammad Shakir in his attic near Delhi&#8217;s Sarita Vihar.<\/p>\n<p>Parthshri Arora<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shakir\u2019s father, Mohammad Tahir, is a casual worker in the unorganised construction business. His work these days involves covering up the nearby sewer for \u20b9350 a day. His youngest son, aged five, goes to the village madrassa \u00a0because the fee is a low \u20b950 a month. But he did manage to admit Shakir, his eldest in the municipal school. \u201cAt first, the headmaster wanted an Aadhar card,\u201d Tahir tells me, sitting on a wooden platform outside his house, \u201cbut all I had was my refugee visa and UN refugee identification. After one year of trying, the headmaster gave Shakir a chance.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shakir is cooped up in an attic room above his family\u2019s one-room house. To keep him free of distractions, his father built a bamboo cove, just four-feet high, so he will have some space to study. Shakir scored a 6.6 CGPA in the tenth grade, and was named class monitor. Tahir understands the magnitude of his son\u2019s ambition, and in a cluster where most children help out their fathers in the construction work to supplement their family\u2019s income, Tahir sends Shakir to accounts and business studies tuition, for \u20b912,000 a year.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I climb up the four creaky wooden steps inside the house, under the watchful eye of his wife and their new three-month-old. I keep my head down to avoid bumping into the low ceiling and to couch my embarrassment. Shakir\u2019s study &#8212; little more than a holey tarpaulin sheet &#8212; is filled with 11th-grade CBSE textbooks.<\/span>\n\n<blockquote class=\"quote--center\">\u201cEnglish is my favourite subject,\u201d he tells me, \u201cbecause it\u2019s the only way I can tell the whole world about what\u2019s happening with my people. I don\u2019t want to fight with weapons, I want to fight with education.\u201d <\/blockquote>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEnglish is my favourite subject,\u201d he tells me, \u201cbecause it\u2019s the only way I can tell the whole world about what\u2019s happening with my people. I don\u2019t want to fight with weapons, I want to fight with education.\u201d I smile at Shakir\u2019s naivety, and listen to him tell me about Khushwant Singh\u2019s \u201cPortrait of a Lady\u201d, his favourite short story. \u201cIt reminds me of my grandmother,\u201d he says. \u201cShe used to bathe me in the morning, prepare me for school, and feed me when I came back. She is still stuck in Burma and we haven\u2019t heard from her in three months.\u201d And after a pause, \u201cI don\u2019t even know if she\u2019s dead or alive.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/13.201.39.237\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1505743672-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"407\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-25542\" \/>\n<figcaption>\n<p>A young Rohingya boy fills water from the only hand-pump in the settlement.<\/p>\n<p>Parthshri Arora<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shakir and his family have been marginally fortunate. Luck is a changeable mistress around these parts, and they at least have a roof over their heads. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I watch a tiny girl of about eight, using her entire body weight to pump water out of a hand pump as her two younger brothers bathe in the open. There are mosquitoes flying everywhere, on their faces, on their clothes, on their bare buttocks. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am reminded of a comment by Home Minister <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/deporting-rohingya-refugees-a-policy-decision-supreme-court-musnt-interfere-centre-1751665\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajnath Singh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who recently labelled Rohingyas a terror threat. People in this settlement make below <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u20b910,000 a month. They have no access to electricity, clean water, and are dependant on the local anganwadi<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for regular supplies. How a people struggling to keep their heads above the water, could be considered terrorists is beyond me.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, there is a heartbreaking hope that somehow, India will come through. It permeates throughout the village. One of the first settlers here, 60-year-old construction worker Naroon Amin, tells me that their \u201clives are stuck in a small boat in the middle of an ocean\u201d. But he believes with his heart that they will not be deported because India won\u2019t let it happen. \u201cI don\u2019t think a country with aspirations of wanting to be a superpower will send us back,\u201d he says. There are already 125 crore people here, he says, how can a few extra thousand worry them? <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shakir understands his murky future though. \u201cThe Indian government has given us so much, but going back means certain death.\u201d He\u2019s concerned about his education getting interrupted, but there are bigger problems to worry about. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this new road to perdition, is paved with bad intentions. It does not even allow for eternal damnation.
