As I near my 40th birthday, I have realised that I am neither the sort to go crazy with champagne, nor be forlorn and regretful. So I’m celebrating “The Year of Magical Doing”, where I prioritise writing letters, reading short stories, collecting recipes – basically, doing everything I loved as a kid.

A month after our dog Poncho died, I went for the PTA to my daughter’s school. The class teacher told me she would blank out for long periods and sit in a corner weeping while her best friend hugged her. I had failed to address a significant milestone in her life – her first experience with death.
