I
want to make a confession. I’ve always thought that the Emmys, the annual celebration of the best shows, works best as a personal recommendation system. Allow me to explain: As much as it is a privilege to live in an era of peak shows, it is also stressful if you’re someone who loves watching but is also overworked, sleep-deprived, and have multiple to-do lists to finish. With a new show releasing every other week, not only is it impossible to keep up with all of them but zeroing in on which show to start with, becomes the biggest conundrum.
This is why I prefer using the Emmys – both the nominations and the eventual winners – as a yardstick to cancel out all the noise and pick and choose the shows that are really worth investing in; shows that are guaranteed to offer us an unforgettable viewing experience. Afterall, they represent the best of shows that is out there and a stamp of approval from the Emmy rarely misses the mark. Look at this year’s big winners for instance: After an enthralling eight-season run, Game of Thrones capped off its journey with an Outstanding Drama Series win, the flawless Chernobyl won Outstanding Limited Series, Fleabag won Outstanding Comedy Series. The Best Actor and Actress for the Drama categories were shared between Billy Porter for Pose and Jodie Comer for Killing Eve and the Comedy winners were Bill Hader for Barry and Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag.
When I went through the list of winners yesterday morning, my mind instantly raced to one question: Where could I watch all of these shows? A quick Google search was enough to tell me that I could find four of these shows on Hotstar Premium. If one were to do a tally of all the awards of the night, Hotstar Premium comfortably inches its competition out: At the moment, it hosts 12 shows that have won at the Emmys. And this is without including the award tally at the Creative Emmys. That’s some solid stamp of approval.
